Wolff expects “very complete” Hamilton will win more titles

Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff believes there is “more to come” from his driver after his fifth world championship victory.

“This is the best Lewis Hamilton I’ve seen in the last six years,” said Wolff. “He’s driven better, he’s been better out of the car. Very, very complete.”

Hamilton’s 2018 campaign was marked by a lack of significant errors, said Wolff. “He didn’t do a mistake. We all do mistakes, small ones. Maybe Spa we could have kept the lead at the start. But it’s irrelevant.”

Faced with a stronger threat from Ferrari at the beginning of the season, Wolff said Hamilton’s greatest strength lay in “keeping his calm and holding his nerve.”

“We had times when the car was good enough to win and times when the car was not good enough to win. And he always was very stable.”

“His race craft is great,” Wolff added. “That was always one of his strengths. But this year that was definitely one of the key factors.”

Wolff expects Hamilton will continue to deliver titles providing Mercedes remain a competitive force in F1.

“As long as he is in a good car and he continues to enjoy the way he is today I think there is more to come,” he said.

“But I think the reason why he has won the fifth championship is that he concentrates on the job at hand and not looks too far away. Because before reaching seven there is a sixth to win. And we haven’t scored a single point towards that one.”
