  1. Leclerc – unlucky and lucky.

Unlucky not to get the win, lucky to get 3rd. saved only by the SC c/o Renault.
Leclerc will have to learn from this to protect the lead he needs to protect the engine.

Lewis, as the scrapper he is his, gets the win for his shear persistance. Bottas, was another driver.
Bottas had the ‘advantage’ of another blistering start, but dispite making up 2 places, lost those 2 places again in a blink. His luck is holding, but for how much longer….

    1. I agree with you.

    2. Nothing to “learn from this”, just an engine failure.

  2. Bottas must be glad about his fastest lap point now.

    1. luck points run out rather quickly…

  3. If Leclerc had gotten fastest lap in Australia, which driver would have been third in the championship? Him or Verstappen?

    1. Verstappen on the basis of countback, because he has one more 4th place finish.

would be even further in the lead if Leclerc didn’t have his problem. Hamilton suddenly got lucky. Bottas also did, but didn’t gain as many points. But Hamilton was admittedly significently better. But Bottas’s tyre options were very strange which won’t have helped.

Without Leclerc’s problem, Bottas would have 41 and Hamilton would have 36.

    1. What are you talking about? Hamilton had the strange tyre choice out of all the top drivers.

      1. @thegianthogweed Bottas was terrible Hamilton had a damaged floor last race, Bottas was still brilliant mind. But when Hamilton beats Bottas it us usually an absoloute pasting. And yh i think youl find Hamilton was on the wrong strategy buddy. Anyway it would probably have been 2 points the difference if Vet did not lose hios head so Bottas got lucky there aswell. Or Hamilton could even be leading now if Vet finished 2nd which he should have without the spin. Bottas was slower than Hamilton when he had far better tyres SS do not work in the race compared to Soft. Bottas also got overtaken on track by Hamilton this was a very bad race for Bottas the same old story im afraid. Ves was even keeping him honest for abit.

I think I didn’t realise how bad the ss were then. Fair enough. That does in that case make it clear that Bottas struggled.

I don’t see it being that impressive that Hamilton got by Bottas when Bottas went wide and lost speed. Bottas also managed to pass Hamilton on track at the start due to Hamilton’s mistake. But I won’t deny that he was obviously beaten by a far bigger margin than the other way round last race.

But at least when Bottas was fighting, he looked really aggressive, especially right at the start. And his qualifying pace looked great too. He clearly struggled this race but i think he just did’t manage the windy conditions well. I am hopeful he will be back on form next race as i don’t think it was just a 1 off solid performance in Australia by Bottas.

  5. That fastest Lap point is a red rag to a red bull, its a carrot at the end of a long race, tempation to go break your engine. I’m sure Leclerc would sooner have had the win, than that point for fastest lap.

The real mystery is how Lewis is suddenly suffering these ‘bad starts’ which hands Bottas the advantage…

    1. Hamilton was never an imperious starter to begin with, there is no mystery on that issue.

      1. True, but you can also add caution to that. He seems to value avoiding contact over grabbing or not losing a place. As he showed today with Bottas and Vettel, if he’s got the pace he’ll get the places back anyhow. If he hasn’t, there’s not much point in risking damage on the first corner if you’re not going to keep the advantage. He saves the aggression for when it counts.

    2. No mystery, Hamilton admits his flaws and he said with a smile on his face after the race that he practiced and practiced and practiced but it was down to him that he didn’t ace the start. At least he’s comfortable with it and that suggests to me that he will rectify it sooner than later.

  6. Hamilton was never an imperious starter to begin with, there is no mystery on that issue.

Based on what information exactly? Out of 3 seasons with Rosberg, his starts were only an issue in one season. Out of 3 seasons with Bottas, they are only becoming as issue this season.

At worst, that makes his starts an issue 2 out of 6 seasons. More so, he cannot be said to be a bad starter worse than any other driver in his previous seasons with McLaren.

So again, what evidence is this statement based on?

I think it’s based on the fact that no-other top driver has really had consistently bad starts other than Hamilton, such as the 2016 season (which was very, very poor in terms of starts). I can recall bad starts for other drivers but, again, none consistently bad over a season like 2016 was for HAM.

Overall he’s not a bad starter, just definitely not an ‘imperious’ one.

Funny that Kimi’s name still lingers near Vettel inspte being in a B team.

At first I thought they would release the Safety Car and give us a 1 lap sprint to the flag – now that would have been exciting! I wonder where Leclerc would’ve finished had that been the case – probably not even in the points?

  9. Just FYI, you only have 19 drivers listed in your Drivers Championship chart up there. Grosjean is not listed.

    1. That’s because Grosjean has not been a classified finisher in either of the races so far and therefore is not placed in the championship.
