Daniel Ricciardo has been given a three-place grid penalty for the Spanish Grand Prix after hitting Daniil Kvyat’s car during today race.

The Renault driver reversed into the Toro Rosso after the pair went into the run-off area at turn three.

The stewards ruled “the driver of car three reversed into car 26 thereby causing a collision.”

Ricciardo, who apologised to Kvyat for the incident, was also given two penalty points on his licence, his first two of the current 12-month period. Both drivers subsequently retired from the race.

“It was a strange incident which forced the retirement,” he said, “but it was my mistake and I’m sorry to the team and to Daniil. It was a bit of urgency on my behalf and I didn’t think straight for a few seconds, so I have to take that one on the chin.”

  1. Fair enough and he did appologized for his actions.

    1. *apologized

        1. apologise*

          1. Said he was sorry*

  2. F1 is going backwards this season 😉

    1. Indeed Kvyat a lap 1 racing incident and gets a drive through penalty.

Riccardio blocked another car during race and then causes a collision on top of it and gets only a 3 place grid penalty.

Should have been minimal 10 places

    2. @phylyp On what front? Mercedes maximizing the results with Ferrari failing at that or something else?

      1. @jerejj – no, I was joking that Daniel is driving in reverse during the race 😊

        1. @phylyp Oh, I get it now. Initially, I didn’t get the joke, LOL, so I thought you were referring to the lack of proper challenge from Ferrari to Mercedes thus far.

            @jerejj – well, now that you mention it… :)

    3. Full steam reverse and damn the Torpedo!

  3. As expected. It really wad a stupid action. As he stated, “a bit panic”.

  4. Hey, driving backwards is always hard! :)
He just didn’t have enough practice)

New Race format for 2021 – some races will be driven backwards!

    1. Reverse grid, probably a bad idea.

      1. No, no, no, God forbid! No reverse grids!

Grids will stay normal! But I propose that all cars are starting and driving backwards (in Reverse gear… or gears…), with all drivers relying on their mirrors!
Teams will have to prepare special Rear-racing aero-packages, special gearboxes with additional reverse gears, increased mirrors…

I think it will be a hit! The most artificial and farcical racing ever. Just in the atyle of Liberty.

        1. I think ti will be A LOT of hits.

    2. Reverse Daf racing used to be a thing in the Netherlands. Have a look on YouTube. While you’re there, have a look for the reversed video, too – some genius realised that if you play RDR backwards, the cars are going forwards again :))

  5. I”m a big fan of Daniel and it’s pretty hard to see him so scrappy and miserable at the wheel. I’m starting to think that these midfield scraps are not his thing. Obviously the car doesn’t help, but maybe also his mindset is a bit off, given how he was used to just fly by the midfielders whenever he was starting at the back in his RedBull. Not anymore.

Also, what’s going on at Renault? Hulk finished plum last (the Williams dont count obviously), was he in some car trouble?

    1. he was looking good until this clash. the car is really poor, it is incredible how even mclaren made a car thats better than theirs.

9th place was his to take, and it was the best he could get. he should’ve waited to the drs zones as he was quicker.

Why do you think: “it is incredible how even mclaren made a car thats better”

    2. Ric is driving a dog and is also struggling with the braking sweet spot..thought is was doing well in Baku..

  6. Stewards shoud be consistent and give Kvyat peanlty wor that accident.

    1. @ZUKMAN Except that it was 100% Ricciardo’s fault.

      1. @jerejj I suspect that that was @zukman ‘s point

      2. He’s joking about that unfair penalty for Kvyat in China.

@jerejj Does that matter? It wasn’t Kvyat’s fault in the previous race either and they blamed him 100% for it.

    2. Probably a race ban for KVY, if RIC hadn’t apologised and left the stewards no options.

  7. The penalty is a bit lenient in my opinion. After all, he destroyed Kvyats car and thereby race. It wasn’t a slit second situation either. Reversing back onto the track should always be done with caution, which wasn’t the case today.

    1. I wonder what it would be if the roles were reversed.

    2. I guess he was concentrating getting reverse and not stalling before he did re- enter the track. His actual mistake was assuming that Kvyat had made the corner.

  8. The right decision by the Stewards despite the fact neither of the two reached the chequered flag. The more important thing, though, is that he acknowledged his error and apologized for it unlike Max in the aftermath of the 2015 Monaco GP, for example, or Nico Rosberg in Austria in 2016.

    1. Max Monaco 2015…??
Max didn;t hurt anyone, but himself, who should he have apoligised to..?

      1. @Matn He should’ve apologized to Grosjean. He rear-ended him going into St. Devote due to his error of judgment and yet still tried to blame it all on Grosjean instead of taking full responsibility for his mistake like he should have done. I was quite critical at him at the time for that attitude because, in general, it annoys me if people try to avoid taking responsibility for their actions and instead attempt to blame the innocent party. The same with Rosberg in Austria with the infamous last-lap incident At T2 (yes, I know, it’s officially marked as T3, but I still regard it as T2).

  9. for the second race in a row Kvyats car gets rammed by a car coming back onto the track.. oh lol

  10. Yeah well Riciardo was doing OK he is definitely getting used to the Renault, but still a little way to go. :) The overshooting of the corner, not a problem. Reversing into another car…problem.

Reversing cameras for 2020.You heard it here first.

  12. *Ryan Reynolds embarassed GIF*

Ricciardo is fully lost in that banana car, he has made the biggest mistake of his life.

Meanwhile Max V is looking phenomenally mature and measured this season, and quick as hell. What a difference a year makes, and this comes from someone who always supported D.R in that rivalry but the facts are the facts.

    1. “Meanwhile Max V is looking phenomenally mature and measured this season, and quick as hell. What a difference a year makes” – Really? The only difference is that he’s got no pressure of his teammate anymore. What are your measuring tools to come to all these conclusions?

“this comes from someone who always supported D.R in that rivalry” – Doubtful.

“but the facts are the facts.” – What “facts” are you talking about here? Your-opinion-based comment?

      1. God that’s some salt.

Regarding Max im talking about his LITANY of errors during the start of the 2018 season when Ricciardo was picking up wins and Max was picking up bits of front wing. This season he’s making no errors.

I did support D.R in that rivalry because Max was and probably still is a spoilt brat, however he’s driving better than Danny Ric.

The facts refer to the dumb mistake in Aus and the atrociously failed signature latest of the late brakers failed overtake on Kvyat and subsequent rookie error. It happened so thats a fact. So is the fact that Max is 1 point behind a Ferrari.

        Want me to go on?

  13. Danny Ric just can’t catch a break. Is he preparing to emulate Alonso’s career – without the championships?
