Ferrari have chosen more of the soft compound tyres for next week’s Spanish Grand Prix than their championship rivals.
Ferrari, along with Renault and Alfa Romeo, have selected nine sets each of the softest available tyres for the race at the Circuit de Catalunya. In contrast Red Bull will take just seven sets.
Pirelli has nominated its hardest tyre selection for the race, as it previously did for the Bahrain Grand Prix. McLaren is the only team to have chosen more than three sets of the hardest available C1 tyre compound.

With the prospect (as of today) of a cool and rainy weekend these hypers might not play much role.
And the softest compound is usually not the best choice for Spain…
But let’s see!

Ferrari always like to box themselves into a corner, just look at their tyre selection for British GP 2017 and how their race imploded towards the end.

Hypersoft/ultra-soft/super-soft. The latter doesn’t exist anymore, though.

@keithcollantine I presume you need to update your graphics to show either the C# numbers or the S/M/H letters?

Thanks for the tweet.
Okay, for those who are a bit confused, “SS” = C1 = Pirelli’s hardest treaded tyre = Pirelli’s “Hard tyre” for the Grand Prix, “US” = C2 = Pirelli’s second hardest treaded tyre = Pirelli’s “Medium tyre” for the Grand Prix, “HS” = C3 = Pirelli’s middle hardest treaded tyre = Pirelli’s “Soft tyre” for the Grand Pix.

the thing that most intrigues me about this: who are these so called title rivals to Ferrari? as far as I can tell Ferrari aren’t even competing for anything atm?

Agreed. If the selection is the same as bahrains than it would make sense for Ferrari to use more mediums as it worked pretty well there.

I wonder if all teams just had 4 sets of each compound whether it would shake up the weekend a bit?
