Bottas almost one-and-a-half seconds ahead on test day one

Valtteri Bottas was emphatically quickest for Mercedes on the first day of testing at the Circuit de Catalunya.

The day’s running ended with Bottas almost one-and-a-half seconds ahead of the next-quickest driver, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Bottas lapped just one tenth of a second away from his pole position time at last week’s race.

He ran the C5 tyres, the softest rubber in Pirelli’s range, two stages softer than the most aggressive rubber which was available last weekend. The C5s will be available for next week’s race in Monaco.

Daniil Kvyat was third-fastest for Toro Rosso ahead of Nico Hulkenberg’s Renault and Pierre Gasly’s Red Bull. In addition to the 10 regular runners, Sebastian Vettel and Sergio Perez covered testing mileage for Pirelli’s 2020 tyre programme.

In sunny and warm conditions the teams enjoyed a productive test, some of them completing the equivalent of two race distances. The only major interruption came when newcomer Callum Ilott crashed his Alfa Romeo at turn three.

  1. What happened to Mercedes? Less sandbagging? Talk of being more capable than the Ferrari?

I’m confused. Will Red Bull sweep Monaco?

    1. Opposite day 😏

@slotopen Guess the cat is out of the bag.

    3. @slotopen – They started reading the comments.

  2. 1’15.5… I wonder – were they still not pushing or were the tyres too fragile?

    1. @dallien

Probably had the engine turned down. There’s no need to put in fast lap times during an in-season test.

      1. @todfod I assumed that in testing they are not using their engine allocation – especially for a team like mercedes, they could easily produce some spare engines to use in testing. this would seem fair, especially for the teams running on the prototype pirellis.

        1. @frood19

I don’t think the sarcasm came through.. Was just trying to say that they hit a 1:15.5 despite taking it easy

    2. Well considering he went 1/10th quicker with 2 x harder tires for his pole lap I’d say he’s not going as fast as he could.

Although neither was Leclerc as Vettel was faster in qualy in the race, so they weren’t pushing either.

  3. Last chance F1, 2021, last chance…

  4. So they finally have a chance to beat the Ferraris?

    1. Maybe, but that would depend on Red Bull, Toto is taking the ship on a conservative course.

  5. Concerning that Renault seems to have only turned about 1/2 the laps that the others did.

Hopefully it was because there was a lot of items to test and they all took time to add and set up and not a reliability issue.

I like the diversity of the headlines you use buddy!

This could easily have been “Bottas almost half second-and-a-one millisecond ahead” after Spanish GP qualifying.
But instead we saw “Bottas denies Hamilton…”…LOL. Totally out of reality.

I know that “clicks” is what make this blog stay alive, but shouldn’t you consider to be more balanced?
And don’t get me wrong, “.co.uk” extension was more of a local british thing, now there is no excuse…

    1. Seriously?

Seems to be way too many people having a go at @keithcollantine and this one is just way out of line.

If the titles offend you that much, you know what your options are.

      1. @dbradock @RB13
Neither I am offended nor I am attacking Keith. In any way.
It’s just an observation which probably came strong for you.
I am entitled to an opinion, you have the right to disagree.
        Let’s move on.
        @webtel
I know buddy. Let me explain my way of thinking. Let’s say that in Monaco qualifying Leclerc is faster than Vettel. There are two ways to write a headline. “Vettel slower than Leclerc” and “Leclerc faster than Vettel”. Both describe the exact same thing. But don’t you think that the use of the first one is unfair to Leclerc? Why should someone use the first one when the second is the one which is accurate, literal and totally fair for both of them?
That’s the idea behind my post above.

    2. @ioannisk
Titles of articles and reports are meant to draw attention. I think this one does justice in every sense–conveys how big Bottas’ and thus Merc’s advantage is over the field and that happens to be the reality. There were 13 drivers who posted times including one factory team (Renault) which did only 50% of the laps that Latifi in a Williams did; there is a lot more information in that table–i think we can discuss about that rather than the headline which isn’t misleading to be fair.

      Cheers.

    3. @ioannisk

Bottas almost half second-and-a-one millisecond ahead

Yeh because that REALLY rolls off the tongue doesn’t it.

Sit down or go and start your own site with whatever poorly thought titles you wish.

Kinda sad, this season is pretty much over. It looked so promising it might be competitive, just a matter of Bottas or Hamilton. zzzzzzzz
