Ferrari’s customer teams will use the ‘spec two’ engine for the first time at the Monaco Grand Prix.

The factory team introduced the engine upgrade on its cars at the previous round in Spain.

“We get now the same spec as Ferrari introduced in Barcelona,” Haas team principal Guenther Steiner confirmed to media including RaceFans in Monaco.

“I don’t know exactly how much the power difference is and how much the drive-ability is. It’s not only power, it’s drive-ability, it’s energy management and all that stuff.

“I don’t know the maps and will never know them, but for sure it will not be worse,” he added.

Alfa Romeo confirmed to RaceFans they will also use the new engine specification.

  1. Around Monaco, wouldn’t it make sense to just use a high-mileage spec 1 engine, instead of putting mileage on an improved spec 2 engine that can be better utilized at other circuits?

    1. That was my first thought as well. Even if the driveability improvements are meaningful, in Monaco I think predictable balance, traction, and mechanical grip are far more important.

  2. Also, my my, that’s one table where Mercedes (and their customers) are at the bottom.

    1. Except for Russel who seems to have damaged one of PU all other Merc customers on bottom of table.

      1. @Chaitanya That was because of the drain-cover incident in Baku.

    2. There should be some kind of prize for the winner of this ‘championship’.

      1. There is. It’s usually called the Constructor’s championship. ;)

@phylyp Ferrari still can use those “old” parts though.

      1. @f1osaurus – one area where the Ferrari-powered cars might be at risk is the Control Electronics. They all switched to new CEs after Leclerc’s Bahrain issues. And since they are only allowed 2 CEs in a season without penalty, those 6 cars are on the cusp of a penalty if any of them put in a new CE. I think this’ll be fun to watch as the season plays out.

  3. Only the Mercedes, RP-drivers, and Kubica are still in their first copy of each PU element. Everyone else has used at least two units of at least one PU element so far.

    1. Yeah, and Russell only got there after the drain cover ripping into his ES in Baku @jerejj – a clear advantage in reliability there for Mercedes, I guess either the stability of having a headstart and ‘only’ having to make incremental improvements, or the 2014 (2016, 2018?) issues having taught them what to improve?

    Buahahahahaahaaa!

    1. That is trust, that is @shimks! Either in Ferrari being honest and competent, and/or in the FIA enforcing equality of mapping options between manufacturer/customer.

  5. I thought the current engine regulations required PU manufacturers to disclose all the information about usage to their customers…
