The outcome of the British Grand Prix was heavily influenced by the Safety Car period triggered when Antonio Giovinazzi spun his Alfa Romeo into a gravel trap on lap 18.

This was the break Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel had been hoping for. Out of the top six runners, they were the only ones yet to make their pit stops, and it handed them the chance to fit fresh tyres while losing consierably less time than their rivals.

Some of those who had already pitted also came in. They included Max Verstappen, who was able to jump ahead of Charles Leclerc, who initially stayed out. Verstappen then used his fresher tyres to chase down and pass Vettel, before being knocked out of third place by his rival.

Carlos Sainz Jnr also benefited in a big way from the Safety Car, rising to take the ‘best of the rest’ spot after qualifying outside of the top 10. Only one driver made up more places than him in the race: Daniil Kvyat, who rose from the penultimate row of the grid to take points for ninth.

Lewis Hamilton produced a superb lap on heavily worn hard tyres, setting the fastest lap of the race on 32-lap-old hard rubber, extracting more performance than his team mate did from his fresher soft compound tyres.

  1. Nearly half way through the race it seems like Leclerc falls away from Mercs at a constant pace.

  2. Max is showing great speed that can challenge even the Mercs, if only that he wasn’t held up by Ferrari (ref. lap 24 to 36). Good battles looming in forthcoming races.

  3. If you compare the Renault pace with Gasly, they are actually quite similar. Presumably Ricciardo was faster than Sainz as he was able to stay right with him half the race. Therefore could you say that Renault are improving to the pace of a poorly driven Red Bull?

  4. Question: did Bottas do 2 extra laps to Lewis in q2? Did his medium tyres have two extra laps on them at the start of the race? Or was I seeing things in quali? Was this the reason Bottas had to pit earlier than Hamilton?
