Ferrari have chosen more soft tyres than rivals Mercedes and Red Bull for next weekend’s German Grand Prix.

The drivers’ tyre selections for the 11th round of the world championship at the Hockenheimring have been confirmed by Pirelli.

Ferrari, who are yet to win a race this year, have favoured the softer tyres in the last two races. Both drivers qualified on the softest rubber at the Red Bull Ring and Silverstone while their rivals tended to favour the medium compound.

Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc will each have nine sets of the soft tyres compared to eight for their rivals at Red Bull and Mercedes. However Renault and Toro Rosso have selected the most sets of the softest available compound, with 10 for each of their drivers.

  1. Should help Vettel to not crash

  2. Just one set of mediums for Nico. Somehow that doesnt seem wise. They will return one set aft er FP1 (S).
One after FP2–i am guessing they will do long runs on the hards in FP2 and return it.

Race day, say they start on the softs, and then switch to the hard for a one-stopper, and lets say he flat-spots it post his first pit stop due to an incident. Assuming they test all three compounds, he will be left to choose the used set of mediums ? or may be do more stints on the softs depending on the wear ?
I understand this is applicable all drivers but wouldn’t it be wise to always have at least two sets of mediums at all races just to be on the safer side ?
