Mick Schumacher said driving his father’s Ferrari F2004 at the German Grand Prix weekend was an emotional experience for him.

The Formula 2 driver took the car around the Hockenheimring after the final F1 practice session for this weekend’s race.

“It was great,” said Schumacher. “It was amazing to be able to drive the car around here. It was my dad’s seat and everything and it fit perfectly so that was even, on top, greater.”

“[From] going out of the pit lane [to] coming into the pit lane, I never lost a smile,” he said. “It was always on my face the whole time. Even when I was locking up I was smiling! It was really cool.”

Schumacher’s father won his seventh world championship at the wheel of an F2004 powered by a Ferrari V10 engine. “People asked me if I could hear [the crowd] but I said that the V10 engine was a bit loud so it was hard for me to hear them,” said Schumacher.

This is the second time Schumacher has driven a car his father raced during a grand prix weekend. He previously ran a 1994 Benetton B194 of the type his father won his first world championship in, and also tested for Ferrari in Bahrain this year.

“I’ve been able to now witness how it was 10 years apart, do the ’94, the 2004 and obviously as well the 2019 one,” he said. “In general I think that the development between ’94 and 2004 was a huge step, and then obviously as now again an even bigger step. But to be able to drive the V10 and feel how that one behaved and sounded was something very special.”

  1. Suggestion: let’s not talk about Mick until he accomplishes something worth talking about.

Of course if driving Michael’s car is and will be the peak of his career (unlikely given amount of hype, but not impossible given lack of what makes champions out of someone), then ok.

    1. We all started talking when he wrapped up his F3 championship last year.
A championship win after a great mid-season turn around not good enough?

Fine, let’s see how he gets on through F2. But don’t expect people not to talk.
Can’t change what others do, so don’t let it bother you.
