Gasly quickest as Albon crashes in wet second practice

2019 Hungarian Grand Prix second practice

Pierre Gasly led a Red Bull one-two as rain fell on the second practice session for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The quickest times were set during a brief window of dry running early in the session. However steady rainfall sent drivers into the pits for much of the middle part of the session, until the track was wet enough for intermediates.

Before then Gasly took the opportunity to record the quickest time of the session using a set of soft tyres. However on a slippery track his 1’17.54 was over half a second off the best time set in the morning session by Lewis Hamilton.

Max Verstappen made it a one-two for Red Bull, lapping just five-hundredths of a second slower than Gasly on the medium compound rubber. Hamilton was third-quickest, a tenth of a second off Gasly, using the hard tyres.

After failing to set a time during first practice, Valtteri Bottas covered 18 laps after Mercedes re-fitted an old engine to his car. He was fourth fastest.

Daniel Ricciardo was fifth-quickest for Renault ahead of Kimi Raikkonen, Charles Leclerc, Nico Hulkenberg and Antonio Giovinazzi. Daniil Kvyat took the final top 10 spot in his Toro Rosso.

However his team mate Alexander Albon’s session ended on his second lap. Albon put a wheel onto the damp white line approaching the final corner and snapped sideways, skidding into the barrier. That caused a brief red flag interruption to the start of the session.

The Haas pair ended up outside the top 10 while Sebastian Vettel never set a representative time and was 13th. Carlos Sainz Jnr, 14th, also switch to an old engine after McLaren discovered a water pressure problem on his car.

  1. I hope for Gasly’s sake that is geniune pace rather than just some odd coincidence.

    1. I don’t get why people like Gasly. he is not unlikeable, he was never quick, gp2 went off the boil, super formula not quick just consistent and under a good team, f1 toro rosso form all over the place and paired alongside a steady driver. Better f1 career than sainz and kvyat so he’ll surely survive the season.

    2. Please read the articles Chaitanya, all your questions will be answered. In this case, you can see that Gasly was on the softest tire in only a limited dry window. VER was on the medium and HAM was on the hard.

  2. not that much running today, unfortunately the time was filled by cringy sky, the distress upside down flag comment over ferrari’s garage is just a crofty special. How many Brits won the championship for McLaren? How many won for Williams? How many won for Ferrari? 2 for each.

    1. @peartree what happened with Crofty?

      is it worth a laugh?

      1. Crofty is the worst thing about Sky’s F1 coverage…so probably not.

        1. Oh, and by my count only 1 Italian won a world championship for Ferrari @peartree. Granted he won it twice…

          1. @geemac Farina & Ascari?

          2. @geemac Farina won it with Alfa Romeo.

          3. Oops, should have been @bernasaurus

          4. @mashiat And Ascari won 2 WDC’s…that’s what I meant.

          5. @geemac Yeah, I just put the wrong name in when posting my comment. My reply was not intended for you.

      2. @johnmilk If you enjoy descrimination then sure. Unfairly bash and make up drama about ferrari is to be expected and not everything is uncalled for whi ch sometimes is a good thing about sky, they don’t have the nerve to say the things they say of ferrari on British teams.
jokes like the upside down British flag (sign of distress) over Ferrari is to ignore that Ferrari has 2 British F1 champions and a legion of fans in the UK.

  3. Sorry for Farina was Alfa

  4. Bottas needs a stonking race and things are not shaping up well. Now Verstappen is trolling him as if he’s already got one foot in in the second Mercedes.

    1. Perhaps my response is better placed in the responses to the article about Max and his opinion of LH’s level of pressure by teammates, but I’d be surprised if Max was invited to join Mercedes any time soon. Would Max go? Perhaps, since they are the WCCers of the decade, but that might only last through this year and next. If I’m Max, I’m assuming Mercedes is not interested in him right now, but perhaps later, and since RBR is challenging Ferrari quite well, I’m staying at RBR through 2021 to see where everyone sits with the entirely new regs.
