Only four cars finished on the lead lap in the Hungarian Grand Prix and two of those – the Ferraris – were over a minute behind.

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen set a scorching pace as they disputed the lead. After losing the lead to Hamilton, Verstappen used a set of soft tyres to set a fastest race lap which was 1.4 seconds quicker than anyone else’s and almost four seconds quicker than that of his team mate, who spent much of the race stuck in traffic.

The huge gap they enjoyed over the other cars ultimately gave Mercedes the space they needed to bring Hamilton in for an extra pit stop and threaten Verstappen. The Red Bull driver was not able to respond to Hamilton’s pit stop – the Mercedes driver took around 1.8 seconds out of him on his out-lap alone, and Verstappen would have lost the lead had he come in.

For a long time it seemed Verstappen would be quick enough on his worn hard tyres to keep Hamilton behind. But on lap 63 – the 38th lap for that set – his pace dropped and never recovered. Having struggled to take more the second a lap he needed out of Verstappen to catch him, Hamilton was suddenly over two seconds quicker, and from then on it was a question of when, not if, Verstappen would lose the lead.

Other position changes in a lively final 10 laps included Sebastian Vettel passing his team mate Charles Leclerc, Valtteri Bottas demoting Lando Norris and Alexander Albon taking the final point off Sergio Perez. The Racing Point driver had, like Verstappen, tried to run a long stint on the hard tyres.
