Ferrari 90th anniversary celebration
Ferrari 90th anniversary celebration

Ferrari drivers past and present (and future?) joined the team to celebrate its 90th anniversary ahead of the Italian Grand Prix weekend.

What they say

Hamilton extended his lead over Bottas for the fourth race in a row in Belgium and now leads the championship by 65 points. But Toto Wolff says he is not calling off the fight between his drivers:

No we are going to encourage Valtteri, as we did, to go flat out without getting ahead of ourselves. This is still a championship that is not won. Not the constructors’ nor the drivers’.

Both of them have been very intelligent in their driving and fighting with each other. It’s one of the strengths of the team and I’m very proud of how they do it. Therefore Valtteri is free to go and fight for victories and for the best possible position in the championship.

Comment of the day

Would LED panels be as useful in F1 as they are in other series?

The LED panels are visible at daytime too. I find them immensely useful at all times in IMSA and WEC, with their massive spread of cars.

Their use in F1 is questionable, but it would be a nice-to-have, but not a must-have. The wheel rim lights are gimmicky in my opinion, and probably add nothing to the information that you would get from the LED panels on the side like in WEC cars.

  1. Does anyone have the list of all the people in that great Ferrari picture?

    1. I’m old enough to recognise Arturo Merzario, Rene Arnoux, Mario Andretti, Ivan Capelli, Eddie Irvine, Kimi, Seb, Luca Badoer (did he turn up last?), Fisichella, Jean Alesi, Marc Gene, Felipe Massa, but I’m stuck on some of the ones who haven’t started shaving yet ;-p

      1. It’s just a wild guess, but I believe that might be Mick Schumacher on the right front. Of course, I could be completely wrong.

        1. Yeah, that’s Mick Schumacher. Charles Leclerc is between Massa and Andretti, Antonio Giovinazzi is between Arturo Merzario and Jean Alesi, and I believe the third one from the right is Antonio Fuoco.

Oh, and there’s Pascal Wehrlein behind Jean Alesi (you can only see half his head), Robert Shwartzman to the right of Räikkönen.

          I think that’s all I can recognize.

          1. Plus of course Jean Todt next to Massa, Montezemolo between Fisichella and Vettel, Domenicali and Binotto behind Vettel and half of Arrivabene’s face to the left of (but really behind) Leclerc.

Ross Brawn doesn’t seem to have made it.

      2. We (Well, not me) recognized Clay Regazzoni (The guy with the tache that isn’t Mansell) in our F1 group.

        Quite the picture.

        1. @stopitrawr
I’m not sure if I understand your comment correctly, but Clay Regazzoni can’t be in that picture, he died 13 years ago, unfortunately …

    2. People? I’m still gawking at so much red carpet to roll out. And up.

    3. i think i see domenicali in between vettel and montezemelo, could be wrong. and possibly even arrivabene hidden at the back! how did they convince him to show up!?

i have many questions: who is the guy in the white hat? and who is vettel speaking to? i thought it could be piero lardi ferrari but it doesn’t look like him.

it’s an intriguing photo because of the wide range of big names and rather unknowns (the junior drivers mainly), plus the fact it’s so chaotic – one dude literally has his back to the camera. it’s also a massive sausage fest but that’s the history of the world, no less ferrari.

      1. Lardi Ferrari is the white haired man between Massa and Todt. Don’t see Berger, Prost, Barrichello or Scheckter.

  2. Is anyone else terrified by the phrase “watching E sports”?

This unfortunately is where the future of F1 seems to be heading and I believe will head once they get on top of the potential revenue streams. Give it a few years and there will be no tracks, no cars, no teams of engineers, other than a few software ones. Actual motor racing will be considered “historic”.

    1. @dbradock: Indeed. Seems not a fun future for petrolheads.

However, with excellent modeling, the fake e-cars won’t be able to follow each other and the F1 fan tradition of moaning about can continue unabated. ;-)

    2. watching online gaming is already much much bigger than you think…. and the skill level is probably higher given the entry level is much lower, millions can afford the best racer in esports, skill is the differentiator. That said I think there will always be a place for real transport racing.

  3. Two things, Keith:
    – Firstly, I like the links above social media in the round-up.
    – Secondly, how were the burgers? :)

    1. I’m hoping there will be a thorough article on the burgers in the near future!

    2. Yes, we need an update on the Neat Burgers. This is important.

    3. Keith was last spotted racing to the nearest gents clutching his buttocks shouting ‘It’s Hammertime!!!!!’.

No idea what he meant by that?

      1. Was that before or after he’d had a Hamburgler?

…jokes aside, as a vegan myself I can guarantee every supermarket will have FAR more tasty burger replacements than Hams overpriced version!

        1. I don’t think its for the likes of us in the tesco and maccy d queues. They employ high end chefs and its to complement the higher end vegan restaurants as their ‘fast food outlet’ equivalent. I don’t think they will be springing up in our local High Streets. More places like Manhattan, Los Angeles, Dubai and destination cities.

First reports say the burger is top line, chicken pretty good, and the hot dog nothing special.

        2. I’m sure that assessment has nothing to do with your weird obsession with Lewis and denigrating everything he does oh no of course not.

          1. I’m sure that assessment has nothing to do with your weird obsession with Lewis

            Ha!
It’s funny because that could be an excerpt of a textbook example for psychological projection.

    4. I am not Keith but have done my own ‘research’ yesterday. I was in London and went to Neat Burger for lunch! I have the standard Neat burger without any extras and sweet potato fries. This was the best vegan burger I have ever eaten. I have tried vegan burger for the last 18 months as often as I could when out or cooking at home. It felt like eating a very good meat burger – simple as that! The fries were great too. The only down side it the price at £8.50 for the standard burger: stupid London prices if you ask me. I hope they will be able to have some economy of scale as they expand and be able to reduce their retail prices. I am back in London in two weeks time and will try the ‘chicken’ one, that’s for sure!

  4. Not every past-Ferrari driver attended yesterday’s event, though. Neither Mika Salo nor Rubens Barrichello participated in the event, nor Fernando Alonso.

  5. About the CotD – I think the wheel rim lights, if done right could add more than a side panel can.
In endurance racing the numbers and colour displays help a lot with all the differing categories. In F1 we don’t have as much of that, so we should find different usefull things, especially to give information to people watching track side.

I would love to see them use those to
    – could be big enough to show larger position numbers (larger than on the sides)
    – show what tyres the cars are on after a pitstop.
    – show how many laps they have done on the tyres once we get around pitstop times
    – why not show tyre temperatures, since they will all be measured by a FIA mandated sensor.
    – “glow” when a car is breaking – since we won’t be seeing the brakes themselves because of the wheel covers
    – Also, they could show when a car is regenerating energy on the rear wheels. And they could show how much energy is put back in too

In other words, make it more than just a gimmicky “oh, cool, lights”.

  6. So finally Luca Montezemolo and Domenicalli were invited to Ferrari event after they were constantly snubbed by their previous president.

    1. Strange. Montezemolo and Domenicalli are now successful CEOs of Alitalia and Lamborghini respectively.

  7. Mick Schu – Talk about shoehorning yourself into the middle of a photo!! He may as well have sat in the cockpit…
