Comment of the day

F1 teams may not like the idea of having more competition, says @Tomcat173.

You’d think that F1 wants to create an environment where at least one new team could enter the sport and compete in the championship. You wonder how they would accommodate that new entrant into the revenue sharing model though. The amount of dollars being shared across all teams is likely to stay the same size year on year (save for some incremental growth or loss).

When a new team enters, they will take a portion of that pie – are all of the existing 10 teams going to be getting less money in the following year just because a new team has entered? You can’t see them being happy about signing up to a system where they get less money just because an 11th team has joined.

  1. Tata out?!
Great! Maybe now we will get “proper” F1 TV PRO.

Tata is not too bad of a company, and maybe provided good services to F1, but they utterly failed with the “showcase” piece – F1 TV.

Hope Sky or some other company with expertize takes over, and we get rid of ridiculous (in 2020) 1 minute video feed delay, general lack of feed quality, and maybe even get a new application!

    1. i’d have to err on tata not being able to fully integrate their vision within the f1 sub-culture. the interactive advances made have all been hard earned & fraught with skeptical counter-agendas. the f1tv issues appear to be within the front-end FOM eco-sphere. maybe there is another deal with an end to end provider. liberty certainly know several. but why change the lght-bulb unless it is or someone thinks it is broken.

    2. I don’t really mind the quality of F1 TV Pro. I just want support for ChromeCast or some set tip box, so I don’t have to drag a computer to my living room.

Preferably ChromeCast, though. I don’t need more boxes.

    3. Viasat has a great, well-working streaming solution since nearly a decade…
They also broadcast F1 in Scandinavia AND sell and promote F1TV pro (parr of their deal, I’d assume). Why not simply use theirs?

    4. No not sky, f1 needs less sky involvement, consumers ought to have a true world feed, every other racing series has a standard dedicated world feed

What potential? So far Albon is not a huge improvement over Gasly. To be fair, he needs to be closer to Verstappen in terms of pace, something more like Bottas is to Hamilton just to give an example.

    1. I don’t put much weight into what tost says about his drivers. He seems to value hard work ethic and dedication to team a lot more than natural speed and good performances in races. Excellent work ethic is of course important but only speed really matters. Everything else can be learned or managed. Albon is just seat filler until red bull can find a verstappen level driver. Call me an idiot if albon starts beating verstappen next season. My guess is that albon is 15th in the driver rankings next season.

      1. @socksolid There isn’t another Verstappen level driver to be found and I’m sure RBR don’t think of AA as a ‘seat filler’ given they know he has only had a part season with them. So all to play for this year when he’s had a fair shake and then we’ll see. Not sure why he has to be either beating Max, or 15th. He can do something great for himself and the team in between those two options.

    2. So to be fair, let’s give him a full preseason followed by a full season with the team, and I bet he shows us some chops in 2020.

What potential? Ya…what do Marko, Horner, and Tost know anyway.

    3. @Cristiano Ferreira Well, both his results and pace were more consistent than his predecessors in the Red Bull, and I’m hopeful he’s going to get better from that.

        @jerejj

        I’m with @socksolid on this one…

I don’t think Albon is better than Gasly, maybe they are equal in terms of skill or maybe Gasly has a bit more speed than him, but is not level headed or calm as Albon. And no, before you ask, i’m not a Gasly fan.

Truth be told, all 3 drivers of the Red Bull program are fillers until the next Vettel or Verstappen appears. If either one of the 3 drivers turns to be a “Bottas like” driver (in terms of skill) RBR can consider themselves lucky already.

I’m talking about those 3 but i dont think Kvyat will improve anymore.

    4. Albon is a big improvement over Gasly.

Thrown into a car mid-season, he was always going to have a few iffy sessions getting used to the car. Spinning or crashing while pushing for fast times is normal in these situations. It’s better than being cautions, slow and lower down the timesheets than the car should be.

      1. Njae…he is, but not huge!
He’ll need to beat the Madman 25% of the times to keep his seat! Preferably, also a win and five podiums are a necessiry…

  3. Gino Bianco died on May 8, 1984, though.

  4. Very interesting that Racer article on Tost and Albon.

“He’s in his second season, and I always say that it takes three seasons minimum until a driver understands Formula 1,” he [Tost] said.

“If you then have a driver alongside you like Max Verstappen, it’s on one hand very positive, because you can see where you gain time and where you lose time. But on the other hand, if he’s so fast it could be quite frustrating sometimes if you cannot match him. Alex should just concentrate on himself, he should learn, and then he will do it his way.”

    1. @shimks And the thing is, Max is exceptional, so all the more reason AA just has to go out there and learn and do his best. Is anybody really expecting he will match or beat Max? I don’t. But that doesn’t mean AA can’t also reach a level of exceptional, and be a really solid racer with a fantastic career in F1 ahead of him. I expect he will only get stronger and stronger and as I said above will at least have a full preseason and season this year at RBR, so I think he is going to get a really healthy amount of points for the team, be a disrupter to Merc and Ferrari, and at a minimum end up looking as a desirable driver to have in F1.

      1. Nice COTD, @robbie! :)

  5. Thanks for COTD Keith!
