Yay, just thought about this traditional preseason prediction post yesterday, and here it is! :)
1. There are a record 22 races on the 2020 F1 calendar, but how many points-scoring rounds will be held this year?
– All of them will be point-scoring (apart from the ones that are not held; i.e. China). So, let’s say 20.
2. Lewis Hamilton has won 84 races in his F1 career so far. Will he break Michael Schumacher’s all-time record of 91 wins this year?
– Yes.
3. Will Kimi Raikkonen retire from F1 at the end of the year?
– Sadly, yes. And he’ll officially announce his retirement, not just fade away or end the season with an ambiguous contract situation.
4. Which driver will out-qualify their team mate the most?
– Sergio Perez.
5. How many races will Red Bull win?
– Seven.
6. Apart from Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull, which teams will score podium finishes this year?
– Racing Point and McLaren.
7. Which driver will win the pole position trophy?
– Lewis Hamilton.
8. Who will be the first driver to be replaced or substituted for a race?
– Daniil Kvyat.
9. And who will take their place?
– Yuki Tsunoda.
10. Which driver will collect the most penalty points?
– Romain Grosjean (kind of obvious choice, but whatever).
11. Who will win the Monaco Grand Prix?
– Max Verstappen.
12. Will any new teams be confirmed on the grid for the 2021 F1 season?
– No.
13. Will all 10 team principals still be in place at the end of the season – and if not, who will change?
– Yes.
14. How much quicker will this year’s cars be than last year’s?
– On average, 3 tenths faster.
15. What will be the biggest political story of 2020?
– As we already have a few, I’m sticking with the cancellation/postponement of races due to Coronavirus.
16. Which driver will retire from the most races due to crashes?
– Romain Grosjean.
17. At which race will the drivers’ championship be decided?
– Mexico.
18. Which team will finish fourth in the constructors’ championship?
– Racing Point, after a season-long battle with McLaren.
And champions:
19. Mercedes.
20. Lewis Hamilton.

Proves they pay the right number of people

8th March 2020, 11:21
Or, rather more likely, people are looking at how competitive Mercedes have been since 2014 and decided that, with a relatively limited regulation change and signs that Ferrari – one potential rival – are already looking towards 2021, Hamilton and Mercedes are likely to be starting this season in an already fairly strong position.
Given their record in recent seasons, why wouldn’t those two be the statistical favourites to take the title?
BasCB (@bascb)
8th March 2020, 19:09
yup, it sure seems that the Mercedes team knows which people to pay to build, setup and race their cars and manage their team @proud_asturian! And they have been doing it for long enough that it’s hard to bet agains them doing so again.
Oh, you meant to say they have to pay people to get on top of a pretty much irrelevant poll on one of the many motorsport sites – sure, it’s by now a relatively influential one, but still, nothing most teams would even spend a few minutes of their time over (and even then probably only if asked by a journalist about it). That’s a meh joke.

1) I’m gonna be pesimistic but I say 19. Vietnam will get called off in last minute, the risk’s gonna be just too high, but then I expect the situtation to improve (the virus should be prone to warm weather). I’m afraid the Italian Grand Prix might still not go ahead, but let’s see.
2) Hamilton will equal Shumi’s record with 7 wins this year. Btw, I had a dream two days ago that Michael was fine, wish it was true.
3) Kimi will retire. I don’t see Alfa performing well this year but on the other hand, he could be a good mentor to Schwatzmann or Schumacher in 2021. This is going to be the most interesting fight for seats next year with Giovinazzi, Kubica, Schwartzmann and Schumacher all in contention.
4) It’s going to be Perez again.
5) More than last season. I see Red Bull winning five or maybe six races this year and Albon’s gonna get one, too.
6) Racing Point and McLaren
7) It’s going to be close between Hamilton and Leclerc but my money goes on Hamilton
8) This is always tricky to predict as anything can happen during the season. I generally predict the driver market to be stable but if I had to pick one, I think Pietro Fittipaldi might get a chance in front of the home crowd for Haas. A one-off.
9) Oh sorry, didn’t see the number 9 before filling the 8 so I will switch them. I think Magnussen will get replaced for one race because Grosjean (behold, haters) is going to have a better season.
10) Kevin Magnussen.
11) Max Verstappen will win in Monaco.
12) Unfortunately not, it’s too late for it and FIA completely ruined things by getting pushed by teams to delay the budget cap. If it was in place in some experimental form from 2019 and then fully enforced this year, it might have helped to get new teams on board. Or find a buyer for Haas, which unfortunately seems to be more urgent.
13) I don’t see any possible change here. Maybe the question’s hinting at Abiteboul’s position in Renault but I don’t see a change here either.
14) More than expected. Of course, it’s track-dependent, but judging by the testing times and last year’s pole in Barcelona (1:15.406), I think we might dip well into 1:14.8xx or so.
15) Biggest political story – again, one of the trickier questions. There’s many things we naturally can’t see coming but at least at the beginning of the year, Ferrari and FIA might get some further troubles explaining their agreement.
16) This is going to be a pure guess. I’ll go with Magnussen.
17) Brazil, but potentially I can see the championship coming to the very last round. Depends on how Verstappen and Leclerc will use their chances.
18) McLaren. Racing Point might be slightly in front over one lap at the beginning of the season but I believe the overall quality of driver pairing and consistency is on McLaren’s side. I predict Renault to be in fight as well.
19) and 20) were Mercedes and Leclerc for me. Powered by Honda – the power of dreams.

Only Facts!

Let’s go for the easy ones:
Hamilton will win the championship and the 8 races he needs to become the GOAT.
Verstappen will dive in the RedBull pool in Monaco.
Grosjean. Period.
Racing (°) lead best of the rest until summer break, then McLaren takes over.
Witan
8th March 2020, 11:09
A couple of other predictions (but please don’t put money on any of them):
1 Verstappen and Leclerc will take one another out, either simultaneously or one at a time. Verstappen will lose his temper and get into hot water because of it.
2 The virus and the lack of FIA transparency will both be big stories with Red Bull if not others going to court for the millions they have been ‘cheated out’ of.
3 Haas will try to sell the team as the 2021 costs are not worth the performance and the virus situation will have cut prize money to make things worse for all small teams.
4 Red Bull might try to do the same with Alpha Tauri. If they don’t get at least part of heir millions (or other o compensation) after Ferrarigate they will try to sell both teams.
4 There will be rumours that Liberty is trying to off load F1. It will be true but never confirmed until a sale happens.
5 Ferrari will be punished by other teams for their imperiousness to normal rule taking and face a barrage of technical challenges from other teams either in direct protests or requests for ‘clarifications’.

3. Will Kimi Raikkonen retire from F1 at the end of the year? No. He will go to Williams to replace Russell, who will have gone to Aston Martin to replace Stroll.
4. Which driver will out-qualify their team mate the most? Perez 16-2 Stroll

BONUS:
21. What will be the biggest shock of the season? Bottas wins only once (probably Russia or Austria)
22. Who will drive for Alfa in ’21? Giovinazzi, Schumacher
23. Who will retire at the end of the season? Vettel, after going out on a high by finishing second in WDC. No one else
24. Driver transfers? Bottas to Aston Martin. Perez to Mercedes. Hulkenberg to Haas, Bye bye K-Mag
25. How many races will Ferrari win? Well, 6 (HAMILTON) + 1 (BOTTAS) is 7, which is Mercedes total, then add 1 for Red Bull, which is 8, and then do 18 (#of races) minus 8 means Ferrari win 10. QUICK MAFFS! Also, I think Vettel will win 6 and Leclerc 4, which should mean we have a juicy three way fight for the WDC!
