The Race for the World series set up by a group of Formula 1 and other racing drivers has concluded and raised $70,000 so far for the World Health Organization’s Covid-19 Solidarity Relief Fund.

The drivers had set a fundraising target of $100,000 and are still accepting donations towards the fund.

The Leclerc and Albon families locked out the top four places in the points standings. Charles Leclerc won the championship which began last Saturday, scoring 90 points over the six races.

Luca Albon finished second on 71 points, two places ahead of older brother Alex, the pair split by Leclerc’s brother Arthur on 58 points. Renault junior driver Christian Lundgaard claimed fifth.

Lando Norris, George Russell, Antonio Giovinazzi and Nicholas Latifi also took part in the series.

Stoffel Vandoorne won the first of today’s two races on the Circuit de Catalunya. Charles Leclerc took victory in the final race at the Red Bull Ring after following home Alexander Albon, who incurred a five-second time penalty.

The F1 drivers will return to esports action in the next round of the official Virtual Grand Prix series on Sunday. The Virtual Chinese Grand Prix on the Shanghai International Circuit will be held on the date the real-world race should have taken place.

  1. The Race for the World series set up by a group of Formula 1 and other racing drivers has concluded and raised $70,000 so far for the World Health Organization’s Covid-19 Solidarity Relief Fund.

This is great news. Well done!

  2. I’m sure they mean well, and they are raising for the WHO, but what would $70k buy in the F1 world? A steering wheel?

    1. @CC Just about as the cost of an F1 steering wheel is around $70,000.

    2. Every little bit helps, and the drivers did say at the start that they would be making donations of their own (undisclosed amounts) on top of the amount raised.

I think one needs to keep in mind that the F1 drivers involved are all on the very junior end of the spectrum, and their salaries are almost certainly commensurate. Charles is on a large salary now, but I’m not sure how much of that he’s actually been paid. Lando, George and Antonio are all on rookie contracts paying a few hundred thousand at most. Nicholas hasn’t even started yet and may or may not be getting paid anything yet, and Alex probably still owes Red Bull money considering the way their contracts are structured.
