Racing Point owner Lawrence Stroll has been tipped put a former Mercedes executive in charge of the Aston Martin car maker he invested in earlier this year.

The move, reported in the Financial Times, would strengthen ties between the two car manufacturers and Stroll’s F1 team, which will be rebranded as Aston Martin next year.

Aston Martin uses Mercedes engines in its road cars. Racing Point runs Mercedes’ F1 power unit, shares some other components with the world champions and uses its wind tunnel.

Stroll, who purchased Force India’s assets in 2018 and turned the team into Racing Point, became executive chairman of Aston Martin Lagonda last month. According to the report in the FT he will appoint Mercedes-AMG chairman and CEO Tobias Moers as the replacement for current Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer.

Aston Martin Lagonda said in a statement to RaceFans it “notes recent press speculation”.

“The company confirms that it is reviewing its management team and a further announcement will be made as and when appropriate,” it added.

Under Palmer’s management, Aston Martin became a title sponsor to Red Bull’s Formula 1 team. The two companies jointly developed the Valkyrie hypercar, including input from Red Bull chief technical officer Adrian Newey, which is intended to offer F1-rivalling levels of performance.

  1. Vettel will join Aston Martin in 2021 for sure… we’ll just have to wait where Checo will be going, maybe Haas?

Bottas will go to Renault to leave the space for Russell at Mercedes.

    1. “Wait for me!!” Alonso panicking

    2. Maybe Lawrence will give Lance a promotion.

    3. Vettel isn’t going to drive for a team that is not challenging the title therefore he isn’t going to drive for any teams.. -Good try though:D

      1. what about Vettel driving for free, while getting significant stake in a F1 team? could be win-win.

        1. Senna did that with Williams..

    4. Pappa Stroll forever will protect his son from any bad blood. I dont see him putting Sebastian beside Lance.

      1. @david-beau

But Perez will smash Lance with equal effectiveness, as displayed last season. The only way Papa Stroll can save his son some embarrassment is by getting Karthikeyan to come back in to F1 and take up that second seat. If he’s serious about creating a strong F1 team though… then Vettel is his best option.

  2. This news appears to be a kick in the goolies for Andy Palmer, but Aston Martin has been a poisoned chalice for many years.

  3. Herr Zetsche?

  4. At least we know it won’t be Paddy Lowe..

    1. I have a feeling it will be.

  5. Nick Fry? Isn’t he too old for this?

Wait a sec. Are we talking about a future ex-executive?
Wild guess maybe Toto? :D I’ll laugh my ass out if he brings Hamilton with him.
Then… we already have a seat for Vettel. Hmm.. my brain is on fireworks :D

    1. Did you not read the article? Wild guess, maybe not.
It names the person in question…
