Codemasters have revealed the first footage of the new Hanoi street circuit in F1 2020.

The circuit was due to hold the first ever Vietnam Grand Prix on April 5th. However the race was called off due to the pandemic.

The race promoters confirmed to RaceFans earlier today they are still in discussions with Formula 1 to find a date when the race can be held this year.

This article will be updated.

    1. The last section might be fun to drive, but apart from that, urgh. Looks like Valencia meets Sochi, in the worst possible way: similar looking concrete walls everywhere, zero elevation changes, and those wiggly straights. And the original plan for the last two corners seemed much better, but instead, it is just two slow corners to round up the lap.

      1. @kaiie I agree with you on the last two corners. I also prefer the original high-ish speed less curving version of them or more precise the penultimate one.

        1. @kaiie, @jerejj (heh, both double vowels there) what was the reason for changing those corners again – have to agree, the final solution doesn’t look as good as it could have been; Valencia meets Sochi seems like an apt, though sad, characterisation.

          1. I’ve put a few laps on it now and though I don’t love it, it’s not without its charm. The final sector really forces you to concentrate. The first two complexes feel like contrivances, though. Picking out braking points on the straights isn’t easy. It’s a lot more fun to drive than Sochi though, which I find downright tedious.

      2. Re-watched Valencia 2012 the other day and have to say that I like(d) the circuit.

Ssht. You’re being heretic. The dogma says: Tilkedromes are boring! Don’t you dare challenge that. Tilkedromes are boring because they have these large escape areas, as if people want to avoid new 94 Imolas. Are boring because of the asphalted escape areas, even if those are none of Tilke’s business. Are boring because cars can’t barely overtake each other since the mid-Nineties… due to aero. And above all Tilkedromes are boring because in my golden youth days there were no Tilkedromes, there were only great tracks like Las Vegas, Dallas, Detroit, Jarama, Jerez 86-90, Hungaroring and the awesome 1990 Paul Ricard that took people to complain when Magny-Cours came in.

Don’t you dare saying that 1990 Paul Ricard was awesome because cool races happened there while Valencia sucks because most of the races were rubbish. Nothing to do with the cars, the technical conditions of the fact that Senna and Prost put on a great show in 1998, even with an overtake in the process.

      3. That was pretty much exactly what I thought on following the video @kaiie! I will have as much trouble recognizing where the cars are as I used to have in Valencia, or really in Sochi. And the straights are pretty much like Baku – very long. Yeah, bit of a shame they didn’t go with their original idea for those corners.

If you watched the one race there that was fun to watch, it is no wonder you liked it @zomtec

      4. Agreed. Uninspiring barriers everywhere. Awful.

Fingers crossed it produces excellent races.

    2. Vietnam looks like Sochi version 1.5

      1. Sochi is fine. Only need to be narrower.

    3. Looks like a technical circuit, interesting to drive but I hold my breath on racing quality. Reminds me of Korea.

      1. Korea has some good passing opportunities.

I wish we had the Turkish track back.

    4. My prediction for the first F1 race on this track (whenever that may be).
      – Action onto T1 and T2.
      – A mad dive at T3 / T4 left hander that pitches someone sideways partially blocking the track.
      – Safety car called immediately without us seeing more than 1/4 of a lap completed (my biggest bug bare at least race until the last corner of the lap!).
      – Boring safety car restart.

Call me cynical, but I’d put money on this :)

    5. A circuit map with a p3nus. Don’t think they took designing the track too seriously.

    6. It just looks like most of the other more modern circuits.

Everything is very samey now & it just makes the calendar feel less diverse & interesting than it used to when you had upto 16/17 circuits that all had there own characteristics that gave them there own look/feel. I just can’t get excited about any of these new races anymore because the circuits are all far too similar. Zandvoort been the exception, Because it’s a classic that follows the terrain rather than a guidebook on circuit design.

    7. Mmmmm concrete…. Is it Sochi? Is it Valencia? Is it roadworks on the M4? Who knows.

      1. Hehehe… I laughed.

        ..and then I cried:-S

Is it Spa67 with a GPL Lotus 49?

    9. Im sorry where this again? I have no clue. Actual design is, OK, the odd interesting turn/chicane. But my god it’s dull, dull, dull.

    10. Tilke… never… learns…

Personally I think the track seems quite interesting and am looking forward to seeing what it’s like in real life. It’s difficult to get an idea of what it’ll actually look like for a GP as one hasn’t taken place yet so hopefully it’ll be a bit more colourful!

      1. Exactly Right

This will become a brilliant location for a Grand Prix. I too look forward to seeing a new venue that has such promise. I said it about Abu Dhabi and it too remains a proper event for a finale of a Grand Prix season. Like you I think they did it Right.

    12. Looks like we didn’t miss much with this one being cancelled.

      1. @Dane Not yet definitively cancelled for this year.

    13. Feels like Valencia meets South Korea
