The remodelled Indianapolis road course would be better for F1 than the old version, reckons Unicron:

I’m up for trying F1 at Indianapolis again. I wasn’t a huge fan of the track back in its 2000-07 period (although the final banked turn did promote some great slip-streaming opportunities), but I have really enjoyed watching the last couple of IndyCar races on the modified version of the road circuit there.

Is that because IndyCars are able to race closer together, or because the modified track encourages closer racing and more overtaking? My guess would be both. But there’s only one way of finding out – let F1 cars loose on there.

Turn one is tighter which it needed to be. I always thought that the 2000-07 chicane was a carbon copy of Barcelona, i.e. a flowing right-left that doesn’t involve heavy braking.

The back straight has been lengthened and the left-hander at the end has also been tightened, so that is another place that will encourage overtaking more. This part then goes straight into a right-left; combine this with the preceding left turn and it encourages switch-back moves. I’ve seen plenty of them in IndyCar.

The downside to the new circuit is that it swaps the final banked turn (turn one on the oval) for a tight infield section. So that is the cool slip-streaming opportunity lost.

Overall, I’d be happy to see F1 back there.

  1. No to F1 in Indy. Ever.

    1. Yes to f1 in indy, I love the track.

    2. Why not, we had memorable races there

Like CoTD I disliked the old Indy F1 track, but I’m open to seeing whether the new design is a little better. There’ll always be something a bit disappointing about watching F1 cars drive along a flat, featureless strip of tarmac in the middle of that big, beautiful venue, but it certainly can’t be worse than watching Sochi or Abu Dhabi.

But only as a second US race. No Indy road course could replace COTA.

    1. I would love to see F1 back at Indianapolis with the banking. F1 has spec tyres which are designed for steeper banking at Zandvoort so surely they could cope, and if not Pirelli can produce a tyre to cope (that would be good marketing for them)

      1. I did an estimate using google maps, and another using the data from racingcircuits.info, and a layout with the IndyCar back straight and the banked last corner came out at 3850m and 3833m respectively, long enough for F1

        1. The F1 configuration was 4.192 km.

The current IndyCar road configuration would probably be awful. I don’t see the point going there without a banking.

          1. @f1mre Yes but with a few extra corners before the back straight

  3. What are the odds of two people being called ‘Zimkazimka’ and them both having a birthday on the same day! :-)

    1. Happy birthdays @zimkazimka

      1. @coldfly Thank you thank you!

  4. Grab turismo 7 still looks like a game, I thought new Gen could look a lot more real.

    1. I think that video is more about content teasers than actual GT7 gameplay.

There are tracks and cars that fans have been screaming for, and people think that the clouds time lapse may be a hint at dynamic weather.

The HUD in that video is all GT Sport and I highly doubt that’s going to carry on into GT7 at release.

      1. There is gameplay at the second half of the video. I liked the graphics though. I think the main difference is the ray-tracing. otherwise the graphics on racing games were already awesome.

    2. Now you only have to wait 2 years for it to come out.

  5. Interesting that they’ve allocated different tyres for the second Silverstone race.

I wonder if that’s because they think the track will be well rubbered in for the second race or if it’s just to add “spice”?

    1. @dbradock Maybe both.

    2. They should have done it for both double headers. And ideally C1,C2,C3 and C3,C4,C5 without the mandatory pitstop.

    3. @dbradock it’s the latter reason i.e. the change is not being made on technical ground, but because Liberty Media wants to throw something in to “spice things up”.

  6. I would be fine with having Indianapolis back in F1. I share similar sentiments with the COTD, although I also liked the layout used in the 2000-2007 period.

  7. I was super excited when Kaz popped up, but didn’t think we’d actually get a new full-blown Gran Turismo game. I figured that with the time required to generate the high quality assets, the focus would stay on smaller scale, racing focused games like GTSport. I’m a huge fan of hardcore sims on the PC, but I’ll always have a big soft spot in my heart for Gran Turismo; it’s the game really, more than any other, that defined racing games for me in my teens and finally presented me with a game that felt like it was tailor made for me.

This alone, even ignoring the other brilliant bits of the PS5 reveal like Horizon, Ratchet and Clank, and others besides, has basically sold me on the PS5.

I was all nicely settled on being a PC Gamer going forward until I saw the trailer for the Demon Souls remake and now I have to save up for a PS5 :(

  8. Love the fact that we get an actual, real Gran Turismo version again. Hate that I have to hide the console in a card board box. That thing is so hideous, it almost looks like satire.
