Albon ‘can’t fault’ Red Bull for giving new front wing to Verstappen

Alexander Albon says he does not object to Red Bull giving the only example of their new front wing to team mate Max Verstappen.

The two front wings are subtly different, and the pair have run the different configurations throughout the weekend.

“There was only one set so they they gave it to me,” Verstappen explained in yesterday’s FIA press conference.

“We’re still understanding the difference between the wings, it’s different philosophies behind it. I can’t really tell you how much of a difference it is because I don’t know. We’re learning, we’re understanding different things.”

Albon said he understood why Red Bull had given the new hardware to his team mate, who has won the last two races at the Red Bull Ring. He expects to get the upgrade when the team returns to the track for next week’s Styrian Grand Prix.

“Historically speaking, obviously Max has had really good results here so I can’t really fault the team,” he said.

“The car felt good. I think comes the second race we’ll have the parts as well so I’m not too worried, just focussing on the job at hand right now.”

  1. what would the difference be, if anything? 0.1s? when they were running same wing on Friday the gap between Max and Alex was also 0.3s.

On another note: any chance RB would have been heavier on fuel than Merc when doing the long runs on mediums on Friday? It’s likely if they already considered starting from mediums and wanted to test degradation on heavy load? in which case they would have had upto 15-20litermore and then the long pace difference is suddenly converging

  2. Lol does anybody actually believe redbull give max and albon the same set up, they give max the faster set up to help hype him up.

Poor carlos.. still trying to “dehype” max ;)
You will have some hard years to come..

    2. Indeed @carlosmedrano, it baffles me that nobody sees this.
It would be disastrous if Albon were to beat their prodigy.
I understand they also detuned Albon’s PU and attached a parachute to the back of his car.

      1. @coldfly don’t forget they hire Hamilton to take Albon out whenever he’s looking promising!

    3. That is just so much nonsense @carlosmedrano. Yes, it makes sense if they have only one wing and they give it to the more proven, faster, driver.
But they certainly wouldn’t do that if they would be able to get two of those wings and were certain the wing is really faster. Surely they would have liked having Albon right behind Verstappen as his wingman instead of letting Norris slip in there and possibly make it harder for either driver.

although I am an ardent LH fan, I am very fascinated by the progress Albon has made. He appears to have a calmer, cooler approach than Max which at least suggests less potential for accidents and race result impairing incidents. I believe AA is a much underrated driver and hope he can really shine this year. It would be great to see him on the podium today…a moment that was stolen from him by Lewis last season. Remarkable performance in qualifying. Good luck, new wing or no new wing,AA.

Just like they don’t want albon to beat max, they don’t want Lewis to win the race that’s why they are going to penalize the crapp out of him
