Kvyat was fast but impatient – Tost

RaceFans Round-up

In the round-up: AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost says Daniil Kvyat’s Austrian Grand Prix retirement was a result of him being too impatient.

What they say

Pierre Gasly finished seventh but team mate Kvyat damaged his car while trying to overtake Esteban Ocon, and retired:

I’m satisfied with seventh position because yesterday in qualifying we were not so competitive as we expected. And therefore we have to stay realistic and the seventh position is really good.

Unfortunately Danny couldn’t bring home a second finish within the points. I think it would have been easily possible because he was out with the new option tyres and was closing the gap. But then he was a little bit too impatient and paid this with retirement. […]

I spoke to him. Of course he was disappointed. But in my eyes, he drove a really good race. And he tried it on the outside and it simply didn’t work. But he was fast and that’s important.

Richard spotted a curious statistics about McLaren’s recent podiums:

The last McLaren driver to place in a podium place on the road and receive the trophy for the position they were in on the classified results and keep that position in the final classified results was Jenson Button winning the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix. Since then they have been classified on the podium four times, all of which have involved some sort of penalty promoting their drivers

2014 Australia: Kevin Magnussen finished third on the road, collected trophy for third, upgraded to second after Ricciardo was thrown out and Jenson Button finished fourth on the road, didn’t go to podium and was upgraded to third
2019 Brazil Carlos Sainz Jnr fourth on the road, upgraded to third once Lewis got a penalty, didn’t receive trophy until later on though.
2020 Austria Norris finished fourth on the road, upgraded to third, in time to collect his trophy at least this time!

  1. Is Nascar trying to alienate its redneck supporters by that statement?

    1. If that’s not their intention, it should be.

  2. To the next generation and little ones following my foot steps…

Trump was stupid for hoping that a Messiah would ever make an apology.

Well said @ruliemaulana, but a little verbose. I suggest deleting everything from “for hoping…” onwards.

    2. Apology for what exactly?

    3. Well, you’re right about the first three words at least!

Not sure about the past tense though.

    4. Though invoking god to justify your path is kind of a non argument. He certainly doesn’t deserve the treatment he’s been given by trump but it’s probably not the best answer possible to it.

    5. I get what you mean, more like token. Feelings are more important than reason in the 21st century. no need for this stuff but whatever.

      1. no need for equality for black people???? why are so many racing fans racist???

  3. I don’t know about you. But if I make honest mistakes about something that enraged half the population I’ll be glad to know that there’s no hate speech happens. I would not doubling down in it in TV and would immediately release a public apology to my peers that go along the way to made a parade to support me.

It looks like it’s not an honest mistake now.

    1. This is a reply to @darryn

I don’t think Trump will ever apologise, @ruliemaulana.

        1. Hahaha. He would never. Always calculated move.

    2. @ruliemaulana The ‘noose’ event might have been what triggered it, but the solidarity statement made by NASCAR with the grid march was a statement in support of Bubba Wallace and BLM, and against racism. That statement stands despite the ‘noose’ event turning out to be a misunderstanding. No apology is necessary from Bubba or NASCAR, unless they’ve decided that they no longer stand against racism.

      1. also the fbi concluded it was a noose, which means somebody tied it as a noose, for only one possible reason. there is no reason to have that rope tied like that. Good on Nascar for cleaning up their act, getting rid of that disgusting loser racest conferate flag and showing support to equality. Donald Trump is done, his last attempt to hold onto some power now is siding with the redneck racist element of USA, an element that is dieing, not growing.

  4. The Vietnamese GP would have to take place within the September-October-November phase next year if it were to get rescheduled to November for this year as otherwise, it’d get unnecessarily tight with the timing of the dismantling process following this year’s event, and the build-up process for next year’s. Permanent circuits can have a race at the tail-end of a season for one year and towards the beginning the next (as did Malaysia in 2000 and 2001, and Russia in 2015 and 2016), but full street tracks can’t. In this case, it’s a new street track as well, so there isn’t a previous reference for how long the dismantling nor the build-up process lasts until after the inaugural event, and by the second one.
Additionally, it couldn’t hold the race in late-November this year as that’s where Bahrain would most likely be if and when it gets rescheduled, and the Vietnamese GP as per previous implications ideally shouldn’t take place on subsequent weekends with another event because of being a first-time race, hence, why it didn’t form a double-header with China in the original 2020 race calendar.

They don’t have to dismantle the whole circuit; so they might even save some costs if it’s November-April.
In Melbourne, it takes many months to build the whole circuit, but disruptions are extremely limited. The roads only close for 6 days (I’ve seen them unloading a Ferrari when I drove past on the Tuesday). My favourite running track (Parkrun Melbourne) closes just 2 weekends. And I believe for the golf course it’s 3 weeks.

      1. @coldfly I doubt they could leave the temporary infrastructures in place to wait for next year’s event. Furthermore, it doesn’t take ‘many’ months to build-up the circuit in Melbourne. More or less the same amount of days and weeks as for all established street circuits. The build-up process in Melbourne also starts around two months and ten days in advance, i.e., this and last year, it commenced around the middle of the first half of January, while in 2017 and 2018, for example, being closer to the end of March, it commenced around the middle of January.
Nevertheless, Here’s an option as to how I could see the re-organized end for this season to look like, and this is for a scenario not featuring any of the following three, the US, Mexico, and Brazil:
Rescheduled Canada October 11 (despite my dislike towards placing Montreal in October)
Rescheduled China October 25 and November 1
        Rescheduled Vietnam November 15
Rescheduled Bahrain November 29 December 6
Postponed Abu Dhabi GP December 13.

I understand FIA has issued a statement regarding the cold bottle usage by McLaren driver Norris and his trainer:

Lando Norris, McLaren, Red Bull Ring, 2020
Why the FIA struck a confidential deal over Norris’ water bottle
Following yesterday’s social media videos, the FIA would like to make the following clarifications:

The FIA has conducted detailed technical analysis on the McLaren water bottle as it is entitled to do for any competitor in the FIA Formula One World Championship.

The extensive and thorough investigations undertaken during the COVID-19 period raised suspicions that the McLaren water bottle could be considered as not operating within the limits of the FIA regulations at all times. McLaren firmly opposed the suspicions and reiterated that its bottle always operated in compliance with the regulations. The FIA was not fully satisfied but decided that further action would not necessarily result in a conclusive case due to the complexity of the matter and the material impossibility to provide the unequivocal evidence of a breach.

To avoid the negative consequences that a long litigation would entail especially in light of the uncertainty of the outcome of such litigations and in the best interest of the championship and of its stakeholders, the FIA, in compliance with Article 4 (ii) of its Judicial and Disciplinary Rules (JDR), decided to enter into an effective and dissuasive settlement agreement with McLaren to terminate the proceedings.

This type of agreement is a legal tool recognised as an essential component of any disciplinary system and is used by many public authorities and other sport federations in the handling of disputes.

The confidentiality of the terms of the settlement agreement is provided for by Article 4 (vi) of the JDR.

The FIA will take all necessary action to protect the sport and its role and reputation as regulator of the FIA Formula One World Championship.

  6. KVY is frustrating. He seems his own worst enemy; a man underperforming his talent level.
