Lando Norris may face a grid penalty for the Austrian Grand Prix after being summoned to the stewards for overtaking under yellow flags during today’s first practice session at the Red Bull Ring..

The McLaren driver passed Pierre Gasly’s AlphaTauri in the vicinity of yellow flags which were being shown for Nicholas Latifi’s stationary Williams.

Norris was told “yellow flags at turn five” as he approached turn four. Accelerating out of the corner he passed Sergio Perez’s Racing Point and Gasly, the latter occuring while yellow flags were visible. He was told “yellow flags here” on the radio at the time.

If he is found to have overtaken in a yellow flag zone, Norris can expect to receive a grid penalty for Sunday’s race. The last such incident occured when Perez was found to have overtaken another car under yellow flags during qualifying for the Singapore Grand Prix in 2016. He was given a three-place grid penalty.

Norris, who finished third in last week’s Austrian Grand Prix at the circuit, ended practice 14th in his McLaren.

  1. Checo’s grid penalty for the 2016 Singapore GP had more to do with his driving under double-waved yellows, though, than merely overtaking a car that had a puncture.

  2. stupid from norris. see a yellow flag? slow down and don’t overtake. Simple right?

    1. That’s not strictly true though is it as you can overtake a car with a puncture under yellows as has been seen numerous times in races where a driver has limped back to the pits.
The issue is overtaking the car that is not affected by an issue that has slowed for the incident but if there are mitigating circumstances such as there was no need for the other driver to have slowed as much as they did then it may not be penalised.
Be interesting to see what the stewards say though as if it was a single yellow and he slowed significantly even though overtaking the other cars then I’d think a fine and a penalty point was more likely.

      1. And just like that he got a penalty lol

  3. @keithcollantine does Racefans try to call this 2nd race at the track Styrian GP (in which case, a small error in this article), or is it, much like the F1 official hashtag, still the Austrain GP? Not sure what to call it, but giving it a different name might help disambiguate sessions, results and penalties.

  4. Slam dunk I’m afraid. From the onboard there was a yellow visible before he passed Perez.

  5. Keith, for cases like this you can use simple screen recording software to grab a portion of video. Then you can have it embedded in the article without the worry of copyright, if you use an alternative to youtube.. there are many alternatives, especially for videos less than a minute in length.

I realise it’s slightly more time consuming but it’s an alternative to screenshots or sometimes nothing at all.

Where exactly do you think the footage is coming from? It will be the FOM feed, which is under copyright, no matter how you view it
