Max Verstappen edged Valtteri Bottas by less than five-hundredths of a second as Friday practice came to an end at the Red Bull Ring.

Today’s second practice session was disrupted when Daniel Ricciardo crashes his Renault heavily at turn nine. His car snap sideways on his way into the high-speed turn and he made heavy contact with the barrier on the outside.

Ricciardo limped away from the car and was taken to the medical centre, where he was declared fit to continue in the race weekend. How his car suffered extensive rear-end damage.

Prior to the session, Renault said their plans for the session had been drawn up with an eye on the weather forecast for tomorrow, which is for heavy rain. Should this cause both of tomorrow’s session to be disrupted, the second practice times would be used to form the grid.

In that case, Lewis Hamilton’s difficulties with his car would prove significant, as he only managed the sixth-quickest time. Mercedes said he wasn’t happy with the balance of his car.

He was out-paced by the rapid Racing Points, which took ‘row two’, and Carlos Sainz Jnr’s McLaren.

Alexander Albon had a high-speed spin in his Red Bull late in the session after setting the seventh-fastest time, but avoided any contact with the barriers. Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc and Esteban Ocon completed the top 10.

  1. Ferrari are looking worse with their new updates.. same old.. same old!

    1. Looks like it. If Russell can get his Williams ahead of Vettel on merit…

  2. I am ready to hear Red Bull complaining or talking about the incident between Bottas and Verstappen.

    1. Move on.
Not the first time vallteri blocked someone during practice.

      1. They’d better move on. It is easy to hold up someone here, especially if everyone is out on circuit considering the lap time in only 1:02-1:06’s. It’s just a normal incident.

This could be a sarcastic comment… But there is no proof that Russell will be anywhere near ready to even replace Bottas. With the level of experience Bottas has in F1 and the team, it makes little sense to change the line up. Hamilton may have been slower than Bottas in all 3 qualifying sessions and beaten in the race. Both of which happened to have several mistakes in by Hamilton. But his speed was there and he was faster than Bottas. Overall this season, it is very likely he will still have speed on race day over Bottas and I don’t see any other team getting the WCC. If Bottas keeps qualifying ahead of Hamilton though and the overtaking difficulties remain all season, Bottas has a slim hope of the title, especially if the bad luck goes to Hamilton which has been on his side the previous 3 years.

I’ve seen from other comments now and that gives me an idea that you are very against Hamilton, but I’ll just add my point that probably won’t mean much to you.

There is very little to suggest that hamilton is no longer the fastest on Saturday other than one qualifying result of being beaten by 12 thousandths of a second….

Include another 9 races back to the the summer break of last year, then he only outqualified Hamilton twice in those qualifying sessions. He’s often been close and I think he looks to maybe have found a little more form this year too. I do think Hamilton possibly isn’t at his peak of qualifying performance any more, but based on the last 10 races, he has still clearly been better than Bottas, and in the races, quite significantly better on average. Bottas just needs to consistently outqualify him and hope that Mercedes more often do the same strategies. Otherwise I think Hamilton will very likely be able to get past him a lot of the time.

  4. Good morning Kimi
Thanks for waking up for this weekend.
    Coffee?

  5. Are you kidding us? oh wait your Sarcastic you got me :)

This track is clearly not Lewis favorite track but Bottas seems to like it very much. Just damage control for Lewis.

    1. He’s not being sarcastic. Just straight up loco

      1. When you have spent a decade rubbishing Hamilton, you have got to grasp any straw you can and just hang in there til he does lose the edge or retires. That way you can you can convince yourself all along that he was rubbish and pretend that he benefited from team orders for the whole of his career.

    2. Hamilton himself said his late braking style isn’t good for this track, back in ’16.

He lost to Rosberg in ’14 and ’15 and almost lost in ’16 even starting from pole and Rosberg from 6th.
Was beaten fair and square by Bottas in ’17 and ’19, and again last week.

So, quit acting like this came out of nowhere.

      1. Come back by the end of the year. This is just one track.
Even Schumacher wasn’t very good at this track and needed team orders two years in a row.

  6. This is really exciting. It’s great to see the grid so mixed up!

  7. RAI quicker than quali last week.

    1. I believe the tyre compounds are a step softer this weekend – could explain it if there’s a time delta between last weekend’s “soft” and this weekend’s.

      1. No, Tyre compounds are exactly the same as last weekend- C2,C3, and C4.

      2. It’s only for Silverstone GP that get different range of compounds for 2 different weekends

  8. Prior to the session, Renault said their plans for the session had been drawn up with an eye on the weather forecast for tomorrow, which is for heavy rain

My forecast shows just an ordinary rain with 53% probability of it happening at all…

With sunny\cloudy weather the hour before and after the race.

  9. Compared to last week many drivers including Lewis have gone slower.

  10. the second practice times would be used to form the grid

Anyone knew when was the last time this happened?

    1. F1 should use Practice sessions to determine the grid at a hand full of random circuits throughout the year, without revealing which beforehand. Today’s session was actually worth watching because of the chance of it setting the grid on Sunday. F1 needs more variables.

      1. Practice is and should be practice. If you don’t want to watch it normally, fine. It’s preparation for the race and should be kept as such. Why does everything have to be taken over by gimmicks to make it more exciting? Practice isn’t the race. It isn’t qualifying. It is what it is. And if that’s boring to you. Don’t watch. Practice sessions don’t need to be competitive. And it wouldn’t change much anyway.

Removing qualifying, which is second to the race on watch-ability, with practice on random tracks simply to make the practice more interesting is effectively pointless if we get an entertaining practice but no qualifying.
