It took Lewis Hamilton a minute and 55 seconds to three-wheel his way around the last lap of the British Grand Prix following his dramatic puncture.

Behind him Max Verstappen set the fastest lap of the race as he tried to catch Hamilton. But the 34-second deficit he began the final lap with was just too much. He took 28 seconds out of Hamilton.

Even so, had the Mercedes driver’s tyre failed a few corners earlier, the outcome might have been different. Valtteri Bottas had the misfortune to suffer a similar tyre a few laps earlier just as he was passing the pit lane entrance. That cost him two minutes and six seconds, plus a pit stop.

The timing of the second Safety Car period, triggered by Daniil Kvyat’s crash, meant almost all the drivers ended up on the same strategy. It was striking that the two Mercedes drivers both suffered similar failures as they tried to make their hard tyres last 40 laps, as did Carlos Sainz Jnr.

A curious feature of the race was the poor pace of Racing Point. Nico Hulkenberg’s pre-race demise meany the team only had Lance Stroll running, but had it not been for the late tyre failures, he would have slipped out of the points by the end of the race.

  1. Hamilton lost half a minute in that final half lap. Had the puncture been one corner earlier, Max wins that.

  2. This race is the 20th GP race for Lewis Hamilton where he has lead from start to finish. It is the most in F1 history! F1 icon Ayrton Senna had lead 19 GPs, Sebastian Vettel 15 GPs and Jim Clark 13 GPs. Lewis Hamilton can track down some of the toughest F1 records if he and Mercedes team stay super focused.

    1. He is now just one podium short of MSC’s record of 155.

      1. That would be so fitting if he gets on level terms with MSC on 70th Anniversary GP. Still, with softer tyres and warmer weather there will some surprises next Sunday.

While your car is a second a lap faster than the nearest rival team, it’s not too difficult to break records.

Of course just like Bottas is doing.

  3. Renault super quick at the end of the race. Looks like not getting their tyres warmed up at the start of stints helps at the end.

  4. Albon’s last stint is impressive, basically a flat line, meaning he was lapping the same times as Hamilton. He was matching that pace for 20 laps, and being the fastest of all for 10 laps. But the boy (and maybe Red Bull) has to answer why he was so far behind to start with, which made him unable to challenge for more points.

    1. He was running on fresh softer tires , while Lewis,Max and Bottas were running on very old hard tires. I don’t think it was that impressive.

  5. Can we have the lower laps for this race? It would be useful.

Cheers and keep the great job!

  6. What was Ham’s last lap time? Not displaying properly on my phone.

    1. It was 1’55″484.
