  1. I thought Pierre Gasly did a fantastic job this weekend. He got my vote.

    1. He got my vote as well. Not just today, but the whole weekend.

And linked to Gasly I award negative points to the useless commentators at Sky. They are so busy at trying to be funny, that they even missed Gasly’s overtake on Vettel (they thought it was a failed overtake from Vettel on Gasly).

      1. @coldfly I thought that was the case but was also blowing raspberries at a baby at the time so thought that perhaps I’d missed something.

I’d agree with Gasly for dotw. Very solid job yesterday.

    2. Yes. He outqualified his teammate. And Albon in the RBR too. And his race pace seemed quite decent, some nice overtakes and a very solid finishing position.
      Nothing not to like

  2. I really want to vote for Hamilton, other than a spin in qualifying he maximised the weekend and that last lap was some real heroics

But I can’t ignore how incredible Leclerc was. That car was fifth or sixth best realistically and he’s somehow on the podium. These were the kind of drives Alonso used to give us and that Vettel never really could

      @philipgb

To be honest, He was 4th 5th and 6th in practice and due to Vettel’s problems, we can’t really compare him to Vettel. I personally think the ferrari was around Mclaren’s pace this time out. If the Mclarens were that much faster than Ferrari, I don’t think Grosjean will have been able to hold them behind as long as he did even though he was on older tyres. Vettel have both bad luck as well as possibly under performing in the race. I think Leclerc’s position was actually realistic given what happened, though good job at beating the Mclarens.

  3. I’d go with Leclerc. He amazed me with his performance during qualifying, but for the race I had not expected him to hold so well. The McLaren’s didn’t have a chance.

The gap to Vettel this weekend was weird though. It is impossible to account that solely to Vettel, whom was actually doing good against Leclerc the previous three races. Had better pace in Hungary. It is clear that something is wrong with his car.

    1. Ditoo for me

    2. Yep, not sure how he did it, but he put a terrible car into the top 3. My vote went here^^

The Ferrari doesn’t look too terrible. They’ve looked a bit different since Austria but Vettel’s Ferrari seems to have taken a step back and nearly turned into an Alfa Romeo this weekend. It’s all a bit strange if you ask me.

    4. Yep, this is where my vote went as well. Great drive by Sharl Legreg in a car that frankly looked 5th best all weekend. Own goals by Tracing Point (come on, who lets their lead driver fly to Mexico) and a very lucky Mercedes who should have stopped both drivers.

Hat tip to Lando who I think is actually living my fantasy life!

  4. No one really stood out as most did what they were meant to do. I think Hamilton’s reaction with the blown tyre performed as a driver of his caliber and experience would be expected to.

  5. Admittedly wanted to vote for Hulkenberg, but went with Leclerc. The Ferrari’s fairly terrible and honestly I expected him to slide backwards but he stayed where he was and grabbed a podium after misfortune struck ahead. I’d say he certainly outperformed his car. I’d also vote for Gasly doing particularly well.

  6. Leclerc, Ricciardo and Gasly where the standouts for me. Lewis solid of course but no better than an average weekend for him really. Went for Leclerc in the end because it feels like he’s the one who outperformed his car the most – especially when you look at Vettel’s struggles. Didn’t feel like he should be finishing ahead of the McLarens, the Racing Point, or Renaults, but he pulled out a mega lap in qualy, was aggressive at the start and temporarily up to 3rd, then held 4th comfortably throughout.

Sainz deserves recognition too for another good race day, but did lose out in qualy.

  7. Gasly has been the most impressive to me, another good qualifying and a nice amount of overtakes, on cars that are supposed to be much better than his.

  8. LH

Brilliant qualifying recovery, brilliant measured race and a truly remarkable win on 3 wheels.
He fought to the very end and deservedly got the win even when it nearly eluded him.

  9. 14% for a guy not even in the race who got out qualified by Stroll. Can somebody explain the love for this guy on this site? He doesn’t even have a personality. Bland and mediocre. I just don’t get it.

    1. The best part about Hulkenberg is that many don’t get him.

    2. Right? He had handful of opportunities to gain podiums when he was in F1 full time but always dropped the ball but everyone seems to go crazy over him.

  10. Danny Ric for me, did the most with a car that shouldn’t really be beating the McLarens.

Honourable mentions for Hamilton, Verstappen, Leclerc, Gasly, Norris, in fact a lot of drivers did pretty well.

+1. Daniel did an incredible job. Beat his team mate in qualifying and race. Defeated the McLarens. Defeated the Racing Point. Great effort.

That said, Lewis and Max are superstars. They are so impressive, that a great weekend from them becomes ordinary.

Leclerc is my honourable mention. He outperformed the Ferrari considerably.

    2. Yep I agree. There were a lot of good efforts by drivers but overall I thought Dan did the best with what he’s got to work with to be in front of the Mclaren’s and be on the tail of the Ferrari.

Definitely honourable mentions for Leclerc and Gasly. Hamilton was his usual stellar self, particularly in qualifying but I can’t put him in front of Dan Ric, Leclerc or Gasly.

  11. Riccardo for me cause in the race, he beat both mclarens and his teammate ocon, who, althought lucky with Bottas and Sainz punctures at the end, did a good job

  12. Here are my driver ratings (based on the Autosport scoring system):
    Lewis Hamilton – 8
    Valtteri Bottas – 7
    Charles Leclerc – 10
    Sebastian Vettel – 4
    Max Verstappen – 9
    Alexander Albon – 4
    Carlos Sainz – 8
    Lando Norris – 8
    Daniel Ricciardo – 9
    Esteban Ocon – 7
    Pierre Gasly – 9
    Daniil Kvyat – 6
    Lance Stroll – 5
    Nico Hulkenberg – 6
    Kimi Raikkonen – 4
    Antonio Giovinazzi – 7
    Kevin Magnussen – 7
    Romain Grosjean – 9
    George Russell – 7
    Nicholas Latifi – 6

    1. That system is pretty broken ranking Verstappen ahead of Hamilton.

      1. Hamilton loses one mark for the puncture and one mark for spinning in Q2. Verstappen’s only ‘error’ was being unable to save the tyres enough to get to the end without that extra pit stop. Verstappen also stayed only ten seconds behind Hamilton and Bottas (before the punctures) in a far inferior Red Bull.

    2. Huh? You know ranking is faulty at best when Grosjean is ranked the same as Gasly, Verstappen and Ricciardo in this race.

    3. Lewis 10 baby. Autosport stinks.

      1. These aren’t the actual Autosport rankings, they are just my own personal ratings using the same scoring system. The Autosport scoring system uses explanations for each number out of ten, rather than actual maths to work out the ratings, so it is still just an opinion that changes from person to person.

    4. I was looking through that list and thinking that those ratings looked pretty accurate, then saw Grosjean was rated as 9.

      1. Grosjean managed to keep up with the McLarens and Renaults for his entire stint on the medium tyres, in a Haas which is nowhere near as quick. His qualifying was disappointing, so it is a nine rather than a ten, but his race was excellent. I could potentially take off another mark for the dodgy moving under braking, but I still think his race deserves at least an eight.

@f1frog That probably takes the difference between team mates as it’s reference and how much positions gained after start. Those things never work.

  13. To me, it was between Leclerc and Hamilton until the final lap. That final lap heroics from Lewis won my vote.

  14. Leclerc, Verstappen, Hamilton and Gasly for me.

12% (12 people this far) voted for Hulkenberg? There must be a joke I just dont get about this guy…

    1. I heard that he even won the Driver of the Day in the F1 site even with a DNS. That’s the reason we didn’t see the DotD at the penultimate lap. They should fix the voting system to exclude drivers who didn’t even start.

@rockgod How is it less broken any other time?

        1. Come on, surely voting for a driver who started is less broken than voting for someone who didn’t.

  15. RIC for me. Not sure why so much love for LEC. The Ferrari’s aren’t running well which actually helped their tyre wear. HUL should have a seat and not on the sidelines.

  16. Leclerc maximised everything but I guess the British guy will win this.

  17. Lewis 10/10.
The only driver to win with three wheels still inflated. Did you watch him going through the corners with just one wheel in the front with severe blisters.

    Daniel 9/10
So good with the car at his disposal.

    Max – 0/10.
Couldn’t beat a three wheeled limping challenger for race win. Pathetic.
He’s so lucky not to have a team mate like Lewis or Fernando or Daniel.

Leclerc – lucky and sudden increase in pace looks suspicious.

Rest All are mere dust particles.
    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

    1. Leclerc and Ferrari cheating again?

    2. Yeah Max a 0 makes sense. His team mate was much better and without Max the mercs would have 50 seconde over the rest of the field. Even better, why dont we hand Lewis the throphy right away..

    3. Why are you even here? You’re clearly not an F1 fan. 0 out of 10 for the driver who finished 2nd having qualified 3rd (highest possible given the quality of the W11)?
Oh, and who had an extra pitstop in his race time to avoid the same issue befalling him as happened to both Mercedes’, Sainz’ McLaren and Raikkonen’s Alfa-Romeo?
      What planet are you on?

    4. @rott
Thank you for giving Max a zero: it literally speaks volumes about your admiration for him!
(I’m kinda suspecting you even have a poster of him above your bed.)
And you’re right: it’s really sad Daniel caved under the relentless pressure of finding those few tenths and ran into racing oblivion ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ in later years he’ll be a nice replacement for DC.

  18. DOTW: HAM, DOTD: A bit difficult to choose between RIC and GAS.

  19. As Hamilton is going to win this anyway I went for Sainz for a great race, and a particularly good first lap. Very unlucky so far in the races – that’s the last 3 races now he’s out-driven Norris on race day, but due to the slow stop at Styria and the puncture here, has only finished ahead of him once (and even in Hungary he had a slow stop).

    1. I agree with you 100% on Saints, I think he pushed the car to its maximum limits just to be unfortunate with the puncture at the last minute, he would have been P4.

I am surprised that so many call out Hamilton or Leclerc – I believe neither had a good and certainly not impressive race.

Lewis qualified a full second ahead of any other team competitor yet on lap 48 he was merely 14.5 seconds ahead of Max, ignoring the initial safety car that is less than 0.5 per lap while running in clean air. So either he was cruising yet his tyres were gone or he didn’t drive a good race. If Lewis is the GOAT shouldn’t he be far ahead of his teammate, be able to save his tyres in a MUCH faster car when obviously not really pushing. Lewis did what is expected and what he should do in the best car of the field, he got pole and he won although it required luck not his skill.

With regards to Leclerc – he qualified 0.1 seconds behind Max so Leclerc’s qualifying was superb. In the race however he was 29 seconds behind Max by lap 48 that is nearly a full second per lap and Carlos Sainz was only 3.6 seconds behind Leclerc despite the Mclaren being more than 0.3 second off in qualifying.

For me Ricciardo, Gasly and Max did a far better job if you ask me.

    1. Welcome to 2020, it’s called “tyre management”.

Hamilton could have gone quicker but would have needed an extra stop, that would have made his overall race slower.

  21. Foolish to consider anyone at all, except Hamilton. Are you all living on another planet? What in the world would make you consider Gasly ?? For that matter anyone other than 44?? Gee I like the way he smiles or answered questions. Compare the whole of the weekend for Lewis And add To it his race performance. Too many misguided comments in this one for me,
Besides there is only one answer

    1. H67
Oh my, you really have some issues, don’t ya?
Hamilton, come on, he should have lapped the field given that car, and then some. But he didn’t, drove a sluggish race, wrecked his tires and then got real lucky…..hardly worth a 6, let alone driver on the weekend.

But Gasly, he finished 7th in a car that has no right being there, kept his tires alive, made some nice overtake move…..clearly a 10 and DoTW!

      1. I saw it this way

Hamilton came to this event having won twice. His entire weekend was one of dominance. That means better or faster or quicker than anyone else currently competing in that field during the three days of the event. As for the tires it impacted others driving entirely different cars too. So maybe it was more about the tires falling apart instead of some dream in your mind. If you can’t see this difference in performance or ability to be fastest in Qualifying or to don-min-nate the whole of this Grand Prix. So Gasly deserves the acknowledgement because he makes one mighty pass during the entire race.
So I guess Gasly or who ever else you think of did more with his Racecar than Lewis did and deserves this acknowledgement as drive of the race or best driver or best moment or ??

I feel completely different about this

  22. @keithcollantine When will we see your driver ratings for this race?
