2020 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix

Antonio Giovinazzi came from the back of the grid to score a point in the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. He finished the race one place behind his team mate, who made up almost as many places.

Giovinazzi made his way forward despite being one of the first drivers to pit, on lap 10, and running to the end of the race on the set of tyres he took at that stop.

He was not among the group of drivers who pitted during the Safety Car period at the end of the race. This was a tricky call to make, highlighted by the fact that among the drivers who were unhappy with their team’s choices included both those who did and did not pit.

Sergio Perez was the clearest example, as Racing Point sacrificed third place on the track to let him in. It’s always easy to ‘Monday morning quarterback’ decisions such as these, but given Perez’s tyres were relatively fresh to begin with, this was a curious call.

Contrarily, Red Bull tried to bring Alexander Albon in, but made the call too late. It seems they were trying to disguise their intentions from their rivals, telling Albon only to stay close to the cars ahead, then giving the instruction to pit at the last possible moment.

Unfortunately that moment was a second or two too late. He was already passing the pit lane entrance when the call came, which doomed him to restarting the race on tyres that were already 43 laps old, and made him easy prey for the cars behind. Making matters worse, he spun out of the points at the exit of the Villeneuve chicane.

The fight for the lead of the race swung on Lewis Hamilton’s decision to ‘over-cut’ his team mate and Max Verstappen by running a long first stint. As the engineers of both his rivals acknowledged, Hamilton had pulled far enough ahead even before the Virtual Safety Car period triggered by Esteban Ocon’s retirement.

Hamilton then ensured a maximum score by bagging the bonus point for fastest lap of the race. He and Valtteri Bottas both did their quickest times on the final tour, Bottas having backed off on the previous lap to ensure he had cleaner air, but ending up four-tenths of a second shy of his team mate.

  1. Why no comments from Binotto fans? Last week they were bragging about dropping Vettel…this week they are no where to be seen.

  2. Thos Red Bull pitstops really fast!

  3. Daniel was consistently slower than Sergio and even Carlos for a good part of the race.

But he was consistently faster than Occon for the entire race.
