I don’t really see a point in FP2 and QLF starting that much later than the race. Why not bring the Friday and Saturday sessions forward by an hour, for example? These two would still commence later than the race, but 60 minutes closer to it. BTW, I expected the image to be from the most recent race which is the 2011 edition because usually the start pic of the most recent one gets used for these posts. Not that it matters an awful lot, though.

@jerejj Nobody remembers the 2011 race. Everyone loves the 2010 race, frankly 2010 was not the great race everyone talks about, like some shanghai races, the fact McLaren won made the racing better than it actually was, at least in the memory bank.
Lately races have been starting early, maybe because of winter in the northern hemisphere or maybe to allow for delays.
As you point out FP and Q relative to R is odd even if late fps became the norm. I bet that we, viewers, are going to struggle with low sun in fp2 and q3.

@peartree Yes, the European races in Nurburgring, Portimao, and Imola started earlier than the previous European ones this year because of earlier sunset times at this time of year compared to the summer. BTW, I think you mean drivers regarding the part about struggling with low sun altitude.

@jerejj I couldn’t care less about the drivers. Remember the start in Austin last year, after t1 you couldn’t see a thing as the fom cameras were heading the sun.

@peartree Well, the drivers have to be able to see the track ahead clearly at the speeds they’re doing. I didn’t have a problem with identifying the cars after T1. The lights out happened at 13:13 (local) and the sunset time at 17:42, at which point the sun was 42 degrees above the horizon, so no problem.
