Romain Grosjean has revealed the extent of the burns he suffered to his right hand during his shocking crash in Bahrain 11 days ago.

The Haas driver will not take part in this weekend’s season finale in Abu Dhabi, which was due to be his last drive for the team, as he continues to recover from his injuries. Grosjean revealed on social media the dressing has been removed from his burned right hand.

His left hand suffered more serious damage during his 28-second escape from his blazing car, hence his decision not to return to racing this weekend.

“Bloody hell, makes me super happy to have my right hand free from dressings,” said Grosjean in a social media post.

“It feels [so] good to see it in such good shape. Waiting for my left hand to recover now.”

Pietro Fittipaldi will substitute for Grosjean again in this weekend’s season finale. Team principal Guenther Steiner said the team’s reserve driver is “more comfortable” about driving at Yas Marina, a track he is already familiar with.

“He tested a few times there in an F1 car so he feels that he knows it more. Obviously it’s a longer race track so it’s more difficult also to learn about it.

“My expectations are still the same: Do your best. I know the car he has got, it is what it is and as long as he can stay close to Kevin [Magnussen], that’s the only benchmark we can give him. And he’s determined to get closer and to learn more and progress.”

Fittipaldi finished last on his debut at the Bahrain Outer circuit but Steiner said the team “couldn’t ask more from his first race” last week.

  1. Admittedly, I struggle to look at the right image.

    1. And that is hte better hand too @jerejj.

  2. Ouch. So glad he’s in such good spirits.

  3. Looks painful. I assume his left hand is probably like that but over a wider area. It’ll take many weeks for those injuries to fully heal but i’m glad he’s keeping positive about it.

  4. It reminds me when I spilled some boiling water on my barefoot. It didn’t look nice, but it wasn’t serious. Romain is really lucky that the wounds aren’t more serious than this, they will probably completely disappear in a week or two.

    1. @dan_the_mclaren_fan Not sure about a week or two but yeah, considering that within those 28 seconds which felt like a minute and a half to him, he thought of Niki Lauda, then yeah he’s been so lucky, including that he didn’t even have to fiddle with his steering wheel to get it off as it was already gone…not that his hands were burned yet until he was up and grabbing the halo, but still…

    2. Yes, the burns on his right hand (the one that is out of the bandages and pictured above the article) are not too bad and will probably take only a couple more weeks to mostly heal @dan_the_mclaren_fan, @robbie, but remember the other, left, hand is still bandaged up and was the one that got 2nd degree burns, so it will look quite a chunk worse for that one.

      1. check those burns are much worse and much deeper and i think Romain did do the right thing.

  5. Looks great and full use of the hands for his Chef career after racing. I remember him saying he enjoyed cooking. Happy for you.

He also said he fell in the kitchen earlier this year, suffering a nasty open fracture on one of his hands. Maybe he should keep racing, less dangerous that way …

      1. Just like Martin Donnelly

  6. If you think about it.. That was nearly equivalent to the Senna crash..I thought Aryton could survive the impact with the barrier..when I saw it live.. Romain fought to live, in unsurvivable impact and fire.. Credit to the man, credit to the sport.

  7. Happy he’s on the mend but disappointed for him he’s not going out on a high note. Youll be missed mate.

    All the best!

    1. Toto will let him test one of the Mercedes cars.

  8. Wow, almost as bad as when I was cooking chicken wings.

Get a grip people, it wasn’t that bad

    1. You weren’t cooking chicken wings while trapped in a burning carbon fibre tub jammed betwen barriers and soaked in gallons of race fuel after a 50g impact, you get a grip.

  9. I assumed it was the palms of his hand that he burned on the halo and the armco barrier.

  10. “Bloody hell, makes me super happy to have my right hand free from dressings,”

Must have been tough to have somebody wipe your ass, even your wife..
