Pictures: Johnson joins 2021 IndyCar testing at Sebring

Testing for the new IndyCar season began yesterday at the Sebring circuit in Florida, where three teams were in action.

Reigning champion Scott Dixon, who begins his pursuit of a seventh championship this year, was among those to take part in the test for Ganassi.

He was joined by a driver who is already a seven-times champion – in the NASCAR Cup series. Jimmie Johnson has joined the team for selected road and street course events this year.

“I got a fair amount of laps,” said Johnson. “I’m really just trying to understand how to slow the car down so quickly and maximise the car in the braking zones. My team mates have been great, working really well with me to get up to speed, and just having a ton of fun.”

Johnson’s car ran in a plain black livery featuring the logos of Carvana, while his team’s pit equipment was painted in dark blue. “I’m very excited for the 2021 car unveil,” Johnson added, “it will come down the pipeline before long.”

Another Ganassi newcomer, Alex Palou, who joins the team following a promising debut season at Coyne, also appeared in the test. Marcus Ericsson, in his second year with the team, completed their line-up.

The Foyt team also took part in the test, with 2020 drivers Sebastien Bourdais and Dalton Kellett, and Max Chilton appeared for Carlin.

  1. Not much braking in NASCAR, that’s definitely the area where he will gain/lose time

    1. He has experience Sports Cbar racing in the Rolex 24 – granted there aren’t a ton of braking zones at Daytona, but I’m sure he’s familiar. I’m betting his problem is more getting comfortable with an open wheel car.

    2. Lots of braking in NASCAR especially at short tracks, I’m betting his problem albeit one that a guy like Jimmie can figure out is keeping the car on the limit without going over it. IndyCar brakes will feel like Superman compared to a Cup car.

  4. Indycars look Very cool now. Very smart and apparently solid and safe. But let’s compare them to the upcoming 2022 Formula One racecars which promise to be extreme in looks and performance.
    Will we in 2022 begin to think the current Indycar design compared to nexgen Grand Prix cars is like comparing a finely cut glass vase to a blunt chunk of a boat anchor?
    From what is showing up in renderings it seems like the changes coming will in fact become some kind of Vcool. That’s extreme coolness.
    As for Indycar it’s two steps ahead and three splashes back. But that’s racing. Look at Formula E. Current car is Vcool too. The new look certainly helped in raising that level into a legit Championship 2021. They have established a fan base and many top level drivers are using the E championship to keep their viability present for opportunity unplanned
