         Just like Webber in Germany a few years back. I really dislike that you can ever be given a lap back. I said this many times (Inc Imola last year), so no bias against Hamilton. Just makes a mockery really.

         That was illegal (= unsafe) all day long. Yet, his fans will tell you that he looked in the mirrors before he put in reverse. Also, Tsunoda got a black&white flag after the 2nd off-track excursion, not HAM in Dubai after 20!

            @mg1982 Just did a quick google looking for hints. I think LH was ok if he did it under yellow flag conditions which I’m quite sure there would have been. Max was cleared in Monaco in 2018 practice for reversing back on because it was done under yellow.

               That makes sense, but that would amount to reversing being legal almost 100% of the time, as there’s pretty much no reason to go reverse when there’s no Yellows.

               Remembered my initial thought, came back: didn’t know if that was illegal, but surely he did not rejoin the track safely. That struck me when I saw that: the safety part of rejoining the track with the back! Remember VET vs HAM in Canada…. and that VET did not rejoined the track safely. Well, this was way more dangerous.

   The Russell-Bottas incident was slightly 50-50, but I can understand Russell’s initial reaction. Reminded me of Schumacher-Hill in 1995 Monza.

      if you watch sky’s onboard footage of it in slow motion, bottas realises russell is along side and suddenly moves left before the contact. It certainly looked more on russel’s side now they have shown this.

            @kbdavies Keep your knickers on. I’m not the only one that thought it was suspect, but pretty sure now he was ok as there were yellows. I didn’t know til now that was permitted under yellows and I amongst others thought it was never permitted.

               And if you didn’t, you could simply have checked before letting your confirmation bias seep through.

               @kbdavies No need to overthink it. I legit thought that was never on, but I wanted to be clear so I googled it and then defended your man. I still think reversing back onto the track even under a yellow can be very dangerous depending on the track and where, for as we know sometimes blokes barely slow under a yellow, or you could have a situation where the yellow has just come out, or just gone away, making the legality of reversing back on quite subject to review. Is it all that shocking that I thought reversing back on was never on?

               As I did a quick google and saw not the specific rules for it, but that Max had been cleared for doing so during practice at Monaco in 2018, SV had come up on him quite dangerously apparently, and the situation was reviewed with Max called to the office, so yeah, it can still be a dangerous thing even under yellow, and can still be cleared for wrongdoing too in spite of that.

            If it’s truly dangerous…. you make the rules along the way…. YES! This is not about reversing, but about rejoining the track in dangerous manner. VET got a penalty in Canada 2019 for joining the track unsafely, this was more dangerous than that for sure.

      Nope, it isn’t when recovering as long as he does it safely (i.e. not like the way Danny RIC did it at Baku). Amusing to see all the clutching at straws though. It turned out to be the right thing to do not to beach it and cause a safety car.

   So, this was Hamilton’s ‘Vettel moment’. But worse because he stopped the care but then drove of again into the wall, breaking his front wing.
   The recovery was luck (being allowed to unlap and the field closed up again) but that was not his fault, that’s just how the rules work.

      So worse that it allowed him to eventually reverse the car and finish second, whilst Vettel ended up with a dnf in a similar situation.

      This is night and day compared to that incident. Never mind that it illustrates the difference between both drivers.

            Vettel was leading the race, on his own, not trying to hurry past lapped traffic. Which, as he admitted, was Lewis’ mistake.

         Hamilton doesn’t steer towards other cars though. If wasn’t for the first lap and it’s lenient forgiveness and the fact people really want Mercedes dominance to cease maybe the outcome could be different.
         As there was no shunt so I tend to agree with what was ruled, nonetheless can’t help but think if the roles were swapped you would still be Ok with the move.

            @humb just checked Verstappen’s onboard and at no point does he steer towards Hamilton there.
            He only steers right again to take the corner.

            @humb Max didn’t steer towards LH. He did it exactly the LH way, and yeah situation reverse I would have been ticked for Max but not because LH would have done anything illegal, just as per the non-investigation for Max. LH has proved time and time again that move is fine, (well, not always, see Albon) so I would have accepted it if he had done it to Max, and like I say just been ticked on Max’s behalf, but that is what is funny about LH saying what he did. As I say, he got a taste of his own medicine. All good.

               Probably car number 33 suffered poor grip.
               To be honest Max avoided mounting the curb to avoid shunting LH (or just didn’t want to spin).

               @robbie Oh get lost. Hamilton isn’t a the dirty driver like Verstappen is. They were at the same height, so Verstappen should have let Hamilton stay on track or gotten a penalty for driving into him like hed id. It’s disgusting that this kind of nonsense is allowed in F1.

               The fact that you don’t understand that a driver who is back needs to yield is just on you. You’re basic lack of understanding anything makes sense that you are fine with it though.

               Verstappen was, all be it barely, ahead at cornerexit, so yeah, it was Hamilton who had to yield. FIA viewed it the same way.

      I don’t visit this site that often, but you think I’d stop completely just because Verstappen finally managed to win a race driving in the fastest car ? That statistically only happens in 50% of the cases. So he lost the first one and rammed into a win for the second one.

   Alonso lost almost half of a second to his teammate in qualification, had a very poor start, spun, had no pace, was losing positions to everyone in almost every fight (only was saved by DRS in the end), and was trashed by Ocon, who isn’t a convincing racer.

   That’s the worst race in Alonso’s career, as he practically did a Massa.
   A solid proof that he shouldn’t have come back to F1.

   PS: Russell needs to think better next time before trying to overtake from that angle in wet conditions. It was rather a racing incident, but think twice in those conditions.
   PPS: Also, what a terrible performance by Alpine. They lost a lap to the leaders in about 10 laps after the first safety car. Alpine Renault (almost) does a Williams today.

      Alonso built up quite a reputation for himself, esp when he was out of F1. I expect to see him retire again for good after this year, with that reputation in shreds.

    A lot of people got lucky today in some way:
    – Verstappen losing the car just before the re-start
    – Hamilton reversing onto the track, after losing it into Tosa (I thought that was illegal, but apparently isn’t)
    – Leclerc spinning on the formation lap
    – Sainz spinning a couple of times, but losing no positions
    – Gasly finishing inside the points after being on the wrong tyre strategy

    What a lively race! Amazing fights for P1 and P3 in the WCC! Alpha Tauri is throwing away points just like RP did last season though. I doubt they will be able to recover this loss.

       Max didn’t lose the car. He ALMOST lost the car but could correct it before he would spon.
       Lewis has the Champion luck 1 lap down and a red flag the best possible for him happeend. (code 77 …..)
       Charles it was wet! Sainz was quit fast and spown a few times.
       Gasly should be much higher but the team forgot you to pit!
