Hauger dominates race three to take win and championship lead

Dennis Hauger put a disappointing Saturday behind him by winning the final Formula 3 race of the weekend from pole position.

The Red Bull junior driver’s victory never looked in doubt as he led all 22 laps to take maximum points in the race in which the most points are awarded.

Jack Doohan took his first podium of his Formula 3 career with second place, with Matteo Nannini bouncing back to third following his collision with Hauger in race two yesterday.

Overcast skies meant that track temperature was nine degrees lower than on Saturday. The starting grid for the final race of the weekend was set by qualifying on Friday, with Hauger on pole and Doohan lining up alongside on the front row.

At the start, Doohan appeared to get the better launch of the two front row starters with Doohan, Hauger, Matteo Nannini and Victor Martins running four wide into the braking zone for turn one. As the field filtered through the opening corners, Hauger retained the lead ahead of Martins, Nannini and Doohan in fourth.

An early mistake exiting the chicane by Martins put his MP Motorsport car all over the sausage kerb, forcing him wide into the final corner and allowing Nannini through into second place.

Race leader Hauger crucially managed to draw out of DRS range while his rivals squabbled among themselves behind. Doohan made use of the overtaking aid to slipstream past Martins up into third place, before giving Nannini the same treatment a few laps later to take second.

Hauger continued to steadily pull away and was never troubled out front. He kept his concentration and took the chequered flag to take the win, the bonus points for fastest lap and the early championship lead.

Doohan finished second to secure not just his first F3 podium but his first points in the series. Nannini claimed the final podium place for HWA.

Race two winner Olli Caldwell finished in fourth, enough to see him leave the Circuit de Catalunya with second in the championship. Victor Martins crossed the line fifth, ahead of Clement Novalak, Frederik Vesti, Caio Collet, Loran Sargeant and Roman Stanek taking the final point in tenth.
