Sergio Perez has confirmed a member of his family’s security staff who was shot during an attempted robbery is in “good condition”.

Local media reported a member of the family’s security was injured during an incident in the Ladrón de Guevara neighbourhood in the municipality of his home town Guadalajara.

Perez confirmed police apprehended the suspects who tried to break into their car.

“They tried to rob the car of my security,” said Perez. “They heard that one of my security guards was last shot, but they basically tried to rob the car and nothing else going on, he is in good condition and the police got the robbers.”

Perez is understood to have been informed of the incident following today’s qualifying session. He took ninth on the grid for the Monaco Grand Prix.

  1. Poor guy. Sad to be reminded how much violence and inequality there is in all too many parts of the world.

    1. Look up drug related violence that happens in Mexico. I remember couple of my friends who have been to Mexico(for herping) telling me you have to decide whats important herp or your life. Even mexican herpers have adviced me the same that they also dont feel safe while doing field surveys in Mexico.

      1. Are you a herper @chaitanya? I’m an ecologist too.

        1. “herping”? Like herpes?

          1. Herping as in searching for reptiles and amphibians.

        2. Yes, so far I have been herping in Northern Western ghats and on Deccan plateau(with trips to West and East Himalayas cancelled 2 years in a row thanks to pandemic). I help my friend with his work on geckos and skinks.

          1. Never heard that term before! That’s really cool work :0)

      2. As I wrote, it is always sad to be reminded of how bad things are in many places (One kind of knows, but just cannot stay sane while having that at the top of their mind all the time.). Sadly those animals you go herping for are also almost often endangered spiecies @chaitanya, @wsrgo.

  2. Really sad. Hope the security guy is not seriously injured and gets well soon.

  3. Thanks for recommending I look it up. Maybe you should have. I did, Mexico doesn’t even make the top 20

    1. I don’t think this is reliable since they classify Egypt for example as a more dangerous country than Brazil & Mexico. Palestinian Territories & Israel where the level of violence is insane from time to time in both sides are classified in the same bracket as Bahrain. You can find a lot of other discrepancies.

      1. @tifoso1989 Brazil has huge issues but isn’t that dangerous for tourists if you avoid the more dangerous areas. Though I say that as someone who has been assaulted at home by an armed gang.

I’ve been working in Sampa in the period between 2018 and 2019 so I have an idea about the situation there. I agree with you that you can easily stay out of trouble. For example where I lived in Morumbi, Brooklyn… the area is quite safe.

However, it was too easy for me to get in trouble as I couldn’t resist going to places that are not safe by my standards. I used to go to Vila Madalena, Pinheros, Augusta, Liberdade, Ibirapuera park & Paulista in the Sundays… I used also to work near Santa Amaro and fortnightly in Interlagos near the circuit where I sometimes do have a walk in the area after work.

Maybe you would laugh at me because the places that I’ve mentioned maybe are considered safe by the Paulistanos. However, I’ve witnessed countless times violence in those places, sometimes live shooting and I have been assaulted twice with no consequences.

When I go out at night in Sampa in the areas I’ve mentioned, I usually have a back up phone, nothing more than a casual outfit, a credit card and some cash enough to get me an Uber or a taxi in case I was robbed. Like you said it’s easy to stay out in trouble in Brazil if you want to and in my case if I don’t speak you can’t tell that I’m a tourist.

The thing is despite all the security issue, Brazil blew my mind and I have a lot of friends there. I was planning to return for a holiday last year as I wanted to go to visit Salvador and Florianapolis but Covid-19 screw all my plans.

        2. Though I say that as someone who has been assaulted at home by an armed gang.

          @david-br
That’s horrendous. At your home ? Thank heavens you’re OK.

        3. @tifoso1989 Thanks, it was a few years ago. The key thing is staying calm and not reacting (that’s general advice given to tourists and residents alike). We live in a house that’s semi-isolated, easy prey but it was fine for many, many years. Then the robberies suddenly increased in the run-up to the Rio Olympics: the drug gangs were driven out of the Rio favelas but, of course, ended up, temporally at least, in the Rio region’s many peripheries. As a consequence, local youths started to work for these bigger fish with inadequate police coverage in these new areas. It was traumatic, but then so is living in a favela, much more usually. Until Brazil reduces inequalities, such problems will continue. But otherwise I’ve had no problems living here and travelling extensively, and I’m an obvious gringo (even though I speak Brazilian Portuguese fluently, it’s with a clear accent). I’ve been to Salvador and Floripa and totally recommend both, hope you can get there some time!

Going by experience man, it’s a country I love and travelled to a few times each year growing up through the 90s and early 2000s but now our family doesn’t dare. Resorts are extremely safe but are a playground for tourists.

  4. You should had been the one looking up before commenting such stupid and ridiculous nonsense.

Lol you honestly don’t know what your talking about and I stand by my comment even though they don’t make a top 20 list. Some people go by experience rather than googling everything to sound smart Oliver, I have family on the border in Tamaulipas,Mexico and there’s these not so nice people called Los Zetas who run everyone’s lives in that state.

      1. By experience you know that Mexico is the most dangerous country in the world by far? That’s an even more ridiculous comment than the previous one. First because I suppose you don’t know every country, second because you say your experience dates from the 90’s and early 2000’s.

      2. You are the one trying to sound smart, Josh. Your comments are offensive, to the truth, to our intelligence.
I know what I’m talking about, I live in Mexico. And those googling to find out the truth know better than you too because they actually researched for FACTS.

Like I said I have had family in the state of Tamaulipas since the 80’s when my uncle married my beautiful Mexican aunt and she still has most of her family still living there so do not call me ridiculous and say I don’t know what I’m talking about. Mexican people are honestly the most beautiful kind people you could ask for but the cartel violence is totally undeniable and when you have family who have been affected by it even though I am a Canadian it hurts man. I love Mexico don’t think I’m trying to run down your country please.

  5. Would I mention that?

      Mention what?
