Is Mercedes’ pace from second practice really demonstrating a Red Bull-beating ability on the soft tyres at the Red Bull Ring?
Red Bull set the pace in first practice, with Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez looking very fast on the medium tyre, but on the softs in the afternoon session it was Mercedes-powered cars that filled four of the top five places during the qualifying simulations.
Lewis Hamilton led team mate Valtteri Bottas and Verstappen, and four tenths of a second further back were Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel. The soft is a different compound to what was used last weekend, and it looks like the low rake cars are using it best so far. But the pace of Red Bull at the Styrian Grand Prix can’t be ignored when looking to Saturday and Sunday.
