Max Verstappen has been taken to hospital for checks following his heavy crash in today’s British Grand Prix.

The Red Bull driver struck a barrier at Copse following a collision with championship rival Lewis Hamilton on the first lap of the race.

Verstappen was able to walk away from the crash scene and into the circuit’s medical centre following the crash. The FIA later confirmed in a statement he had been taken to a hospital.

“The FIA advises that, following an incident during the FIA Formula 1 British Grand Prix today, 18/07/21, the driver of car number 33, Max Verstappen, has been taken to a local hospital for further precautionary checks,” it said.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said Verstappen was lucky to avoid serious injury in his 51G impact with the barrier.

“Thank God we haven’t had a driver that’s been seriously injured or worse here today,” said Horner.

Red Bull also issued a statement confirming the details of Verstappen’s condition: “Following a first lap incident at Copse Corner between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton at the British Grand Prix, we can confirm that Max Verstappen walked away from his car and was immediately taken to the Silverstone Circuit Medical Centre.

“Following an assessment by the trackside doctors at Silverstone Circuit Medical Centre, Max Verstappen has been taken to a local hospital for further precautionary tests.”

  1. One guy in the hospital, one guy winning the race. One guy to blame, you’d never guess which one.

    1. I found it difficult to hear the ambulance siren I have to say. Hope he’s ok @hahostolze, thankfully it’s two weeks until the next race so any concussion should have gone. Fingers crossed.

  2. This is how I read it. Lewis wants to race as long as he is winning. The statement he made earlier this year about wanting to have competition was either tongue firmly in cheek or blatantly insincere. He took Max out. He has the audacity to ask , is Max ok!
I think that’s also why Nico retired, he realized Ham plays in the grey area so much and is willing to risk it all, to the detriment of him or others.

  3. Im afraid what’s going to happen from now on really. Max needed 2 or more years to stop his suicide moves and now he is payed like that.
The penalty to take out the championship and race leader was wrong imo and we will see bad things to happen from now on.
    Mark my words.

  4. I’m all for letting drivers race. Russell shouldnt have had a penalty yesterday, and Norris and Perez shouldnt in Austria. But when you’re putting guys in the hospital with stupid moves at 200 mph you shouldnt be able to go and win the race. A great weekend ends on a very sour note for me.

    1. I’m getting Singapore 2008 vibes…only immediately rather than 12 months later!

    2. @ajayrious
      LOL. Great race.

  5. Here’s to Max…. Here’s to a quick recovery and Karma to the one to blame.

    1. @maddme
Karma sent him to the hospital today for all his silly blocking and reckless, dangerous maneuvers to other drivers over the years. I’m sure Ricciardo, Vettel, and so many others who have been chopped by Max will not lose any sleep over this. At all. Cheers mate!!

I’m out of the loop. Why are we calling Lewis “Karma” now?

      1. A karma ran over his dogma.

  6. Get well and rested Max.

  7. Lewis at his best, sends a fellow driver to the hospital but celebrates his victory as if it was on merit.

What a joke this guy, and his team.

    1. @niki101
You’re terrified…and you should be. LOL. 7 time champ, chasing more history.

  8. And even now he is shifting the blame to Max.

    Despicable human being.

Lewis saying to British crowd, hope you all get home safe, after putting a guy into the wall with 300kph.
Continues to say that Max is so aggressive while being the agressor himself. Trying to overtake on the inside on the dirty line and understeering into Max claiming it was his racing line.

      Racing incident.
Max did not have to squeeze Lewis as close to the apex as he did.
Perhaps he will think twice next time..

Very glad no one hurt. Nasty impact for Max.

        1. You’ve obviously never gone into Copse on the limit. I have. If Max “leaves room” he’s off the track to the left. When you enter Copse at 185 MPH, or in my case at 130 MPH, there’s only one line.

            18th July 2021, 18:03

@pod, explain the physics there please. Why can Max not use the swaths of tarmac to his left?
I get it isn’t as fast a line, but that is not your point? Your point is there isn’t enough room? That seems illogical.

      2. True but Max defended the inside line and Hamilton decided to go even tighter knowing he would have to brake early in that corner or drive into Max…….. We all know which one he chose.

      3. @Davethechicken

        1- The stewards disagree.
2- Lewis had no problem clipping the apex and not taking out Leclerc in the same corner.

Apart from the incident Lewis proving himself to be a sore loser, Lewis proved himself to be a despicable human being with his reaction afterwards.

I am aware the stewards disagree, but they penalise almost all contact now. If it had been Lewis retire, I think it is odds on they would have penalised Max, such is their recent readiness to dish them out.
I agree Lewis could have had a tighter line, which of course would compromise him on the exit. The exact reason Max kept as tight to Lewis as he did.
          Racing incident.

          1. Whatever you say buddy: Left is right and right is wrong, no?
If it makes you sleep any better, fine by me.

Not a single word about Max (who sits in the hospital) by Lewis even when prompted to talk about him by the interviewer post race. All his social causes should find a spokesman that is not a selfless egomaniac.

      selfish*

    2. He asked about him on the radio after the incident and team told him he walked out of it. Is that enough for you?

  11. To me it was a racing accident, It wasn’t reckless, It wasn’t dangerous, It certainly wasn’t intentional….. It was just close, hard racing which unfortunately resulted in contact.

    1. @stefmeister
To the majority of the world: It was reckless and it was dangerous.
      Ask the stewards.

      1. The stewards didn’t say it was reckless or dangerous though, They simply felt that Hamilton was more to blame.

        1. I wouldn’t bother if I was you, Max fans are on full frothing at the mouth mode.

  12. All well to Max!!

He has had a dose of bad luck at two races already. But if he keeps the form together, I think Lewis cant beat him to it. I got the feeling had he maintained the lead on the first lap he would just sprint away from the rest like in Austria.

  13. Pretty awful to see Lewis finally be told in TV interview 1 hour after race end that Max is in hospital, and to not only say that it doesn’t take anything away from his win, but for Lewis to not ask Pinkham how Max is, is extremely inhumane of Lewis. I know he’s a competitor, but that is very poor behaviour.

Dont eat meat or care about someone you just sent to the hospital is an odd social justice cause to support.

    2. Just want to clarify my post. When Lewis was told about max in hospital 1 hour after the race, he said that he didn’t know that he was in hospital.

Mercedes knew, Toto knew, Bono knew, many fans knew

  14. It’s simple, don’t kill competition by taking them out. Race them, overtake them , don’t make sure you tangle a back wheel and injure a competitor.

  15. LOL. Good acting by Max. Bet Helmut advised him if/when there is a collision with a Mercedes, take the most time out of it and “make sure you are looking battered” so we can run to the FIA and work on getting more things wrinkled out to make sure we are winning the titles.

  16. Verscrappy has been asking for this all season time to respect other drivers on the track and perhaps pull back slightly not steer into a driver who was on the racing line and visibly braked FIA are covering for Max still.
