  1. Fantastic. Also so happy that Alonso’s epic defence saved us from yet another tedious and somewhat undeserved Mercedes win.

    1. How would it have been undeserved?

      1. Because they messed up big time on the restart strategy, and the other of their cars took out both of the only other front-running cars. If any team makes such a meal of claiming what should be a massively easy victory… then they don’t deserve it.

        1. I also think that in today’s age when one of the top cars can fall to the back of the grid and then work its way back to the podium or the top of it, is pretty sad. Its happened quite a few times in the Pirelli era / last 10 years, depriving us of a shock result.

      2. (Not undeserved for Hamilton, as he didn’t do much wrong – but undeserved for Mercedes as a whole)

        1. Ok, fair enough.

  2. Can I just say…Nico Rosberg is an absolutely atrocious commentator. Please Sky, never again.

    1. Alonso helped Ocon and Vettel today big time.

    2. Disagree. Coulthard and Webber are godawful, and Brundle has went downhill since the 2000s. Back in 2004 he made it quite clear what he thought of certain drivers, now he’s just milquetoast.

      1. What about di Resta?

    3. @wsrgo Disagree too, I like his different style.

      1. @david-br by his different style do you mean his constant efforts to fangirl Lewis to show himself in great light as the 2nd best driver of all time?

        1. @wsrgo I suppose you mean ‘fangirl’ as a put down because you think women inferior? Classy.

          1. @david-br I can apologise and change it to fanatic, but my point still stands.

          2. @wsrgo You don’t need to apologize to me. Your point doesn’t ‘stand’ because that’s not the aspect of his commentating I like, I was actually thinking of the way he speaks, he hasn’t (yet) adopted the same kind of intonation as other commentators, who, I think, all start sounding much the same. You’re the one wanting to make it a ‘fan’ issue. But hey, you’re entitled to your opinion on the motives of an unknown internet user. Just don’t see the need for the casual sexism in making your view known.

          3. @david-br I’m not apologising to you, I’m apologising in general and also annoyed at myself for stooping so low, and now I will never be able to discuss with you as to why Nico may or may not be a bad commentator.

          4. now I will never be able to discuss with you as to why Nico may or may not be a bad commentator

Why not?! Like I said, it’s the repeat of the same tone/approach to commentating that annoys me. Nico is simultaneously more casual, chatty and informative (or trying to be). Reminded me a bit (a little bit only) of James Hunt’s style contrasting with Murray Walker’s. That’s not to say there’s no room for evolution.

          5. @david-br You didn’t feel a weird fixation with Lewis throughout the race from Rosberg’s side? The ‘hopefully he hasn’t taken out too much out of his tyres’, the ‘yes!’ when he passed Sainz, the ‘come on Lewis, don’t get demoralised now’ when he was in last? Felt a bit too much like James Allen in the ‘Jenson Button Great Wide Hope’ era of 2002 to 2006.

But it seems I am the only one with this view, so I guess I’m wrong.

          6. @wsrgo Weird, no. Understandably enthusiastic, kind of, I guess. Annoying if you’re not a Hamilton/Mercedes fan, very probably… I mean I see where you’re coming from, if he drops all that stuff, fine by me. I still think he’s an improvement. What most irritates me is the ‘banter’ between the usual team and ‘Crofty”s ‘sense of humour’ in just about any circumstances (mean, I know, but what can I say). I think Rosberg is quick to identify the real issues in a race.

        2. Yeah his fawning over Hamilton was cringe sometimes. His “insights” were few. And he didn’t interrupt Croft’s inane ramblings like Brundle does. They should put Chandok in the booth one time.

    4. I also like his commentary – found it refreshing tbh.

    5. +1.

Didn’t know he became a HAM fan. Sky is ridiculous in general, Crofty said on lap 30 or so that some other driver was at fault for RBRs’ nightmare of race, while yesterday he said VET pushed STR out for Q1, when between them was RIC!! STR was out for Q1 already, VET just eliminated RIC. I don’t believe anymore these are just mistakes.

    6. Really? I enjoyed having Rosberg in there, quite a bit better than either Coulthard or Brundle IMO, like @inininin says, he beats the likes of DiResta and Webber or Button by a mile. Far more up to date, goes more into what teams and drivers think, called things right as well.

      As @theswift mentions, quite refreshing.

      1. @bascb when a commentator says ‘yes!’ and ‘come on Lewis’ on a broadcast fed to the entire world, I don’t feel that this person is much of an improvement over the extremely biased James Allen.

But it seems I am in the minority in this, so I guess I’m wrong.

        1. There is quite a difference between a commentator always cheering on people form a certain country and one who cheers on a driver to go and have a run at many people to overtake, because it makes the race more exciting to see him try @wsrgo.

          1. @bascb I want to agree with you, but I’ve seen this from Nico on his YT channel too. He lauds Lewis and pays attention to him far far more frequently than any one else, and it gives me the feeling that he is retroactively trying to big himself and his legacy up.

He also doesn’t seem like much fun…I remember when Brundle or Croft once asked him, a bit tongue in cheek, whether his Monaco 2014 incident was premeditated, and Nico immediately jumped on it saying ‘no, never, I would never do that, I’m not like that’, completely changing the tone of the broadcast.

I also think he was trying a bit too hard today, jam-packing the broadcast with info on racing lines every single lap. It got overwhelming after a while.

    7. completely disagree, he had some good insights into how drivers think and how to drive current cars, tyres , I thought it was refreshing

      1. And I like the fact he argues his corner with Croft and co and doesn’t fawn over Croft like the rest. Getting fed up with the number of times Croft or Deresta says something absolutely stupid, and the usual crowd maintain an awkward silence before trying to move on.

  3. Alonso getting driver of the day is unbelievable. Your teammate won the race and you are in the second hardest track to overtake i would say 3rd btw no way Singapore is easier. That does not make you dotd when you choked on braking.

  4. You do realize that Bottas ran into a McLaren?

    1. It is called collateral damage.
It made even more to look like an accident.

  5. Come on, this was just poor driving.

    1. Exactly, @aapje, I do think Bottas just clearly messed up his braking on a slippery track. This has nothing to do with any team ideas or whatever.

One could argue that he deserves more than a 5 place grid drop for it though. Then again, with how the Mercedes, and especially Bottas tends not to run much good in traffic, that might well end up giving him his work cut out to end in the top 10 now.

BTW, quite a feat from Red Bull to actually get Max’ car in a state where it could run the race, must have been quite a handfull to get it to point where he wanted to.

  6. I was quite impressed with Schumacher’s performance today. I think he needs to step up to an Alpha for next season.

    1. I agree, his best race so far.
Though choice for next year tho.
Haas may be faster next season as they’re totally focusing on 2022.

  7. SO well said Blazzz! He needs a lobotomy or whatever it’s called, but you said it beautifully.

  8. RB should increase security crew arond Vestappen.
Apparently anything goes now to get the championship.

    1. Watch out for the bat to the knee in the locker room!

  9. Bad mistake from Bottas. But is that. Probably 0.5s late braking and that happened. He wasn’t trying to pass. I really think Lando was too carefull braking a bit early to avoid accidents and Bottas hit him from behind.

    1. Stroll also misjudged and crashed.

  10. Poor Rob, is your entire house a faraday cage? At least you’ve got outside to comment.

  11. A few words for two drivers – Russel telling team to focus on Latifi at the start was good to see. Schumacher showing the right things under spotlight. And a line on Bottas – is not really good in rain.

    1. Good points @pinakghosh.
I liked Schumacher defense: hard but fair, he always left space for the other car. Looks like it’s a rare occurrence these days.

    2. Also Alonso for being an excellent rear gunner and keeping Hamilton at bay for long enough to enable Ocon to take home the victory @pinakghosh

      1. Driver of the day. Cant help but think if it was any another driver in that Alpine, probably a win from last to first for Hamilton would have been the eventual outcome.

  12. Alonso is savage. He was asked in Spanish TV about the duel with Hamilton and said he expected to be overtaken by Hamilton in the first lap….but Lewis made a lot of mistakes

    1. He was savage on track aswell. Haha.

    2. Mistakes? Or Lewis was wary of someone with nothing to lose and so backed out of numerous attempts and bided his time? 15 points are a lot more than zero.

      1. Man, I didn’t know locking up, going wide, etc. were “backing out of…attempts” because he was so smart. If he was so smart, he should’ve backed out of the absolute TRASH of a move that sent Max into the wall last race.

  13. What do you conspiracy theorists think the instruction from the team was? Toto saying to Veltteri: “Lando will appear in front of you. Lock up and hit him at the correct angle so you both will take out the two Red Bulls and not touch Lewis, who will be further around the corner”?

    1. @sixwheeler it makes a heck of a lot more sense than a flat earth, Russian collusion, Hilary personally sending people in with a death warrant, the grassy knoll being sentient, aliens only abducting middle aged Americans from the “southern” states especially if there’s an unmarried woman who is pregnant, hanging chads, faked moon landing, 9/11 Truthing…

Yet plenty of people still believe those things.
