As an Aussie, I was a bit peeved when Zhou got the Alfa seat ahead of Piastri… but credit where credit’s due, he’s really growing into it and doing quite an impressive job week on week now. If not for reliability issues he’d have strung together a few points finishes now.

Has to be Tsunoda… I’m sorry I though these were the oscars. Many drivers did a fine job, no mistakes, Max, Alo, Ham, Mag, Alb, Lec. Others were a little unlucky, mostly nobody stood out apart real from Alonso, Max by virtue of Perez not being there, Albon as usual and mclaren by bringing their pitstop A-team to the fly aways.

I went the easy choice of Max. Lewis was solid and Fernando probably deserved more in the race if not for a terrible strategy. An honourable mention to both Haas drivers.

Max, with honorable mention to Leclerc.

Verstappen just did what was to be expected from him with Leclerc and Perez starting further back. I think Alonso deserves DOTW. Outstanding quali and in the race he gave it everything and Alpine even played a very nice strategy that through bad luck didn’t work out.
They correctly rolled the dice staying out on the first VSC as that was their chance to get a podium: have Ocon hold up Hamilton after Hamilton took the VSC stop, while gambling on another later (V)SC stop with Alonso for a near perfect 1-stop race. But Ocon didn’t do his part defending hard the way Alonso did for him before; Hamilton had no trouble getting past at all!
Then the second part of the gamble had to happen: another VSC. That did occur, but it was unfortunately ill-timed as Alonso was just past the pit entry when it happened and not in time around the circuit for the next lap to still benefit from VSC. That cost Alonso 9 seconds.
Alonso was also dealing with a technical issue costing him top speed on the straights. He intentionally let Sainz past twice, in order to gain DRS and keep pace with the Ferrari to be able to defend from Hamilton behind. Very clever driving. Instead of complaining on the radio, he dealt with it in the best possible way.
Alonso did everything right, it wasn’t the result he wanted, but he gave himself all the possible chances. A stellar driver performance this weekend.

Driver of the day should be no other than Stroll. I pick Zhou for driver of the week. Congrats on double points.

Must be Max. all 3 practice sessions, Quali and the race, the only thing he missed is fastest lap.

Hard to argue against Max. Had almost a second on everyone throughout qualifying, absolutely dominating performance. And then won the race through both pace early on and later on not putting a wheel wrong under pressure. Very good drive all weekend long.

+1 but Sainz was also in the picture his Qualiflier wasn’t 100% but i think this was one of his finest race of Sainz. His problem is that Max was the best the whole weekend.

I’m certainly not a Max fan by any measure, but it is difficult to pick anyone else as having a clear reason to be chosen ahead of Max.
I did enjoy the race, but – given starting positions – people largely finished around what one would expect.
Maybe if one uses a process of elimination by working from the most disappointing drivers backwards I may be able to see who else I might consider for my top pick this week.

I voted for Lewis. Did well I think to qualify 4th bearing in mind his problems on Friday. Then made the most of his position on Sunday.
Max is the other obvious candidate. He hardly put a foot wrong. Honourable mentions for Fernando and Carlos. Fernando did very well on Saturday but I feel was let down by his car and his team’s strategy on Sunday.

DOTD: HAM

Verstappen. Hands down. Hamilton and Zhou are also good. At this point, if Zhou can maintain his cool, he may be in chance to be better than Tsunoda.

@krichelle why are you comparing Tsunoda to Zhou? Just because they both like noodles? We are talking about race not race.

Has to be LH – heroic work figuring out a setup to get that car somewhat competitive, enough to get a fastest lap in there at one point… As to Max, “it’s 100% the car, my granny could win in that car. Why does anybody rate him, he’s just lucky to have a dominant car, he just moans and whinges on the radio all the time, it’s the team not him, etc. etc.”
SjaakFoo (@sjaakfoo)

I like that people like you don’t even realise that Max is the first to tell you having a good car is half the work done, for him too.

@sjaakfoo – Oops – my attempt at ‘humor’ misfired I see. I was just trying to imitate some commenters from the recent past, when a certain other driver was winning regularly. I have nothing at all against Max, he’s a top driver, and had a successful weekend. But IMHO LH worked hardest for it, so gets my vote for DOTW.

Hamilton being unable to find a good setup alongside his team is a problem and not a good point.

They did indeed, I went for verstappen because it felt like, because of the SC thing, sainz clearly had the advantage, yet verstappen managed to keep him behind, with roles reversed verstappen would’ve passed.
In any case this was one of the best races for sainz, he was gaining midway into the race on verstappen, when he was like 9 sec behind him with newer tyres, didn’t expect he’d be able to even pressure verstappen.
Hamilton had stronger pace than russell this time with a car that is clearly not yet at top level, but still a relatively good mercedes for 2022, alonso great quali, had the race ruined by bad strategy, I also felt like leclerc could’ve been higher had they managed to pit him during a VSC.

Oh, and the commentators during saturday said russell wants to be called mr. consistency now instead of mr. saturday, his sunday performance yet again reinforces that, his gamble was worth trying cause in the end he still got the maximum result bar beating hamilton, so that makes no change in terms of team points.
