In the round-up: Fernando Alonso is bracing himself for another power unit change penalty before the year is over.

In brief

Alonso says he may need to take a sixth Renault power unit to reach the end of the 2022 Formula 1 season.

The Alpine driver has already had two grid penalties this season for exceeding his allowance of three power units for the 2022 season – serving them at his home grand prix in Spain, then in Austria. After retiring from the Singapore Grand Prix with a power unit problem, Alonso admits he may be required to take a further penalty before the end of the season.

“We are maybe not completely safe until the end of the year,” said Alonso. “So, it is possible that we may have to introduce a power unit. I don’t think that there’s going to be this weekend but soon.”

Comment of the day

Nicholas Latifi may begrudge not having the opportunity to speak with the stewards after they handed him a five place grid penalty for hitting Zhou Guanyu in Singapore, but reader Tommy Scragend doesn’t have sympathy for him…

Latifi admitted on the radio that he didn’t know Zhou was there. If he’d been looking in his mirrors as he said, he would have known Zhou had been behind him. If he suddenly can’t see him, where did he think he had gone?

“It’s my fault I hit him but actually it’s his fault for being there because if he hadn’t been there I wouldn’t have hit him” isn’t much of a defence.

You share the same birthday as Vladimir Putin. Nevertheless, happy birthday for both of you !

  4. All three Japanese GP special designs are good, but Yuki’s is my outright favorite.

    Spot-on COTD.

I almost recognize Paul Monaghan in the 2012 podium image at first.

  5. It’s like some job swap week. Good to see folk getting experience of other series cars.
