Red Bull join Haas in adding stars and stripes to their livery for United States GP

Red Bull have revealed their second special livery design of the year which bears a striking similarity to that chosen by rivals Haas for their home race this weekend.

The world champions announced earlier this year they would invite fans to redesign a portion of their livery for each of the three round to take place in the USA this year. For the United States Grand Prix they have chosen a design based on the ‘Lone Star’ flag of Texas, home to the Austin track where this weekend’s race is held.

While the Lone Star flag appears on the RB19’s rear wing end plates, more stars and stripes adorn the car’s flanks, giving it a similar look to the design Haas has adopted this weekend. Red Bull’s design was created by 39-year-old graphic designer Franco Cavallone of Capitan Bermudez, Argentina, who will attend the race as a guest of the team.

“I think Franco has done an excellent job and the car looks incredible showcasing the Texan colours and culture,” said team principal Christian Horner. “It’s not every day we release a one-off livery, so it’s even more special that it’s designed by our fans.”

Red Bull have won all bar one of the 17 races so far this year, and finished first and second in Miami, where they used their previous fan-designed livery. The third and final design will appear at the Las Vegas Grand Prix next month.

Haas chose to change their livery for their home race because “there’s obviously a lot of talk about American teams right now, but we’re still currently the only American team on the Formula 1 grid,” said team principal Guenther Steiner.

  1. Why would RB do this? They don’t do that when racing in any other country. If RB was going to do it at all the Belgian or Spanish flag would have looked better. That’s a thoroughly hideous livery. It probably took a whole committee of graphic designers to come up with it too.

    1. @ryanoceros Perhaps because of their title sponsor, idk.

Graphic Design must be one of the most challenging professions; everybody has an opinion and think they could’ve done better.
It probably comes second after being an F1 driver ;)

      1. 3rd. Good parent, then F1 driver, then graphic designer.

    3. @ryanoceros – It’s a PR stunt as the article says

“It’s not every day we release a one-off livery, so it’s even more special that it’s designed by our fans.”

So it’s designed by fans…. not a design team (ofcourse then adapt the design onto the car but didn’t designed it)

    4. That’s a great point, why on earth would RBR make a special livery for this race. I mean it’s only the country with the largest economy on earth with a growing fan base, what possible interest could there be for doing this?

      1. In 2018 they also had unusual colour suits always for this race.

      2. All it does is show they are pandering. Putting an ugly red white and blue with stars livery on the car isn’t going to make Americans want to follow Red Bull. Maybe if they were sponsored by a camouflage clothing manufacturer they’d have better luck.

    5. If the flag from Spain is because of Perez then the S should be silent.

      1. Perez isn’t Spanish, he’s South American.

        1. Mexico is in North America (or could be considered to be Central America depending on geopolitical views), not South though.

    6. Because they partnered with Ford…

They actually launched their car in the US too.

      Thinking ahead…marketing..

  2. As an American, I am embarrassed by the pandering by Red Bull. I am also confused as to how this livery showcases Texan culture. lol. The flag on the end plates maybe, but the rest? Nothing about it says Texan culture whatsoever.

    1. I agree that Texan flag colors would be more fitting.

    2. I guess if it’s about getting a few extra $ in sponsorship for a one off livery that would fit American culture …

  3. At least more noticeably different than Haas’ tweaks.

  4. Red Bull showing that there IS room for 2 American teams on the grid

  5. Hollywood!!!

  6. Bored of this pandering now.

    1. The American public is a bored of it too.

Shouldn’t be too long before F1 gives up on it.

  7. How about a full polka dot livery, but the dots are hamburgers? Huh?
Oh, and the nose would be an angry eagle, just like the AAR Eagle IndyCars from the late 1990s:

  8. The inevitable scale model of this would make a great gift for a young American fan. Sure it’s a bit goofy, but so what? They’ve had the normal design for almost two decades, and will have it again in a week. It’s fine.

  9. This makes no sense at all. It’s quite cringeworthy.

  10. I…er…kinda like it (dives under the table).

  11. Tasteful, but not memorable. The livery is quite similar to the one from Haas. Having said that, it is much better executed.

  12. It’s not fair that Milton Keynes doesn’t have a flag of its own, so they have to borrow one with no actual connection

  13. I’m surprised no team has yet run a livery featuring Trump riding an eagle.

      1. Yep, I remember that well! Facepalm.

    1. That man will ride anything

  14. why though

  15. This is pretty much business 101. Make your largest market/client feel special. Not sure what the confusion or hand wringing is about here? Furthermore it’s part of a larger fan engagement initiative. Without question Red Bull, out of any team, does more to reach out and grow the sport. (Marketing, demo runs, media engagement) Its basically their reason for existing. Stars and Stripes that much of an issue?

  16. Are Williams back to blue (but not red or white) for this race? Hopefully they’re on at Mr Gulf for full-time blue and orange next year.
