Mercedes-supported driver Doriane Pin won again in the second F1 Academy race in Jeddah but is under investigation for taking the chequered flag twice.

In a repeat of yesterday’s encounter, Pin led every lap of the race and beat Alpine-backed driver Abbi Pulling to victory. This time the pair were separated by just under two seconds.

However Pin appeared not to realise the race was over when the chequered flag appeared at the end of the final lap. She continued at full speed for a further lap and crossed the finishing line a second time. She is under investigation by the stewards for taking the chequered flag twice, an infraction which typically carries a stiff penalty.

Pin held off Pulling at the race start and remained ahead through two Safety Car restarts to claim victory. She drew away by a greater margin than Friday’s first race and taking the bonus point for fastest lap. Maya Weug completed an identical podium to the weekend’s opening encounter.

Nerea Marti finished fourth ahead of Jessica Edgar in fifth, followed by sisters Amna and Hamda Al Qubaisi. Bianca Bustamante was eighth ahead of Carrie Schreiner, while Chloe Chambers took the final point in tenth after collecting a time penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage.

Williams-supported driver Lia Block fell to 11th place following multiple penalties for a false start and pit lane speeding after pitting for a new front wing under the Safety Car.

There race saw three retirements. The first was Lola Lovinfosse who was hit by Chambers at turn one, then made a dangerous attempt to right her car from a spin by pulling out in front of Block, who could not avoid her. Lovinfosse’s car was too damaged to continue and she will have a five-place grid penalty for the next race in Miami.

Wildcard entrant Reema Juffali crashed out after attempting to avoid Schreiner when she spun on the exit of turn two. Aurelia Nobels was the final retirement after losing her rear wing in a post-restart melee.

Pin holds a 13 point lead in the championship over Pulling after the first round. The second round of the F1 Academy series will take place during the Miami Grand Prix weekend in early May.

  1. Weird. There’s a team radio, an electronic dashboard, and this still happened?

    1. There’s footage of the team celebrating while she’s doing her extra lap asking on the radio how many laps to go…

Absolutely amateur hour from the team. They should be ashamed.

  2. Was there no chequered flag shown to Pin?

    1. It was. Unconvincingly, somewhat behind a panel.

  3. They took the win away. 20 second penalty drops her to 9th and out of the points lead. Pulling wins and new points leader. Bizarre!
