The Formula 1 teams have arrived at a sweltering Hungaroring for the 13th round of the world championship.

While much of Hungary has experienced several days of consistently hot conditions recently, a downpour hit the paddock during the set-up and caused some damage to McLaren’s motorhome. Its Team Hub had only recently been repaired after a fire broke out at the Spanish Grand Prix and they will not be able to receive guests there this weekend due to the damage.

The paddock has a different look this year as it has been completely renovated since the 2023 round. The track’s configuration remains unchanged but there are a few significant alterations to the run-offs. A strip of grass has been added at turn five and a gravel strip similar to those introduced at the Red Bull Ring now borders turn 12.

The Hungaroring has also become the latest circuit to mark 30 years since the death of Ayrton Senna. The kerbs at turns six and seven have also been painted green and yellow as a tribute, which was also done at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve earlier this year. Senna finished in the top two places at the Hungaroring every year he raced there apart from his final visit in 1993, and won the race three times.

Here are more pictures from the build-up to the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Did wonder if they might add a gravel strip for T4, everyone’s favourite straying wide corner. Looks like that one is still fair game.

    1. I was wondering about that, too, but does the change to Turn 5 mean changing the approach at Turn 4 as well (thereby reducing the straying wide that occurs there)?

      1. With the grass on the exit of 5, I think that makes the apex later in 5 which if anything possibly makes the issue at 4 worse. Could be completely wrong though

    2. @brightlampshade I also find the lack of that same surface material at T4 (& T11, for that matter) weird, although the following corner’s exit could indeed impact the T4 exit line as Riker points out.

  2. Question: Does the repair to damage to the motorhome come out of insurance or would that also fall under the budget cap rules?

    1. budget cap rules … it sucks if they spend any money it counts.

  3. It needs a “keep off the grass” sign

  4. I thought these gin palaces were being banned? Why can’t the teams use the on-track facilities?

  5. Hope they leave those cones there. And they’re the right colour for Senna, better than any of this green and yellow nonsense that’s springing up everywhere.
