Verschoor loses another win after disqualification for technical infringement

Richard Verschoor has been stripped of victory in Formula 2 for the second time this year due to a technical infringement.

The Trident driver took the chequered flag first in today’s sprint race one-and-a-half seconds ahead of Kush Maini. However following technical inspections of his car the stewards found his legality plank was too thin and disqualified him.

The planks, which are fitted to the underside of cars to ensure teams do not run them too low, measure 5mm thick when new and must be no less than 4mm thick when they are inspected.

Verschoor’s disqualification means Maini has taken his first victory of the season. Victor Martins moves up to second place and championship leader Isack Hadjar claims the final podium position. Dennis Hauger, Franco Colapinto, Paul Aron and Taylor Barnard all increase their points hauls, while Juan Manuel Correa moves into the final points-paying position in eighth.

This is the second time this season Verschoor has lost a win due to a technical infringement. He won the sprint race at Jeddah on the road but both Trident cars were found in violation of the rules afterwards. The throttle pedal progressivity maps on Verschoor’s car and team mate Roman Stanek’s were found not to comply with the latest 2024 standard.

Of the 17 F2 races held this year, three have seen a change in the race winner after the chequered flag. Hadjar lost his victory in the sprint race at Melbourne after he was given a 10-second time penalty for his involvement in a crash at the start.

Maini has also had a brush with officialdom this year. He lost pole position for the first feature race of the season when an undertray strake on his car was found to violate the rules. That occured in the first weekend after F2 introduced its latest chassis design.
