Tsolov wins last race before serving ban as race ends under Safety Car

Nikola Tsolov resisted team mate Laurens van Hoepen to win the Formula 3 feature race at the Hungaroring, which ended under the Safety Car.

Arvid Lindblad and Mathias Zagazeta collided approaching turn four with two laps to go as they disputed 17th place. The Red Bull junior driver hit a barrier on the right-hand side, then came to a rest on the entry kerb at turn four. Both drivers appeared unhurt in the incident.

The Safety Car was deployed which ensured Tsolov victory at the end of a race he led after taking the lead from pole-winning team mate Van Hoepen at the start. Van Hoepen was still berating himself for his poor getaway after the chequered flag, after allowing Tsolov a run at him on the inside approaching turn one.

Tsolov claimed the lead at the start while the ART pair rebuffed the advances of Noel Leon and Leonardo Fornaroli behind. Santiago Ramos kept fifth while Christian Mansell moved up to sixth at the expense of Sami Meguetounif, who picked up a puncture, and Tim Tramnitz, who had to start from the pits after causing the original start to be aborted.

Van Hoepen seldom got a proper look at his team mate during the race. At one stage he complained to ART that his tyres were overheating in his team mates’s slipstream. Though Van Hoepen drew slightly closer as the final laps ticked down, the arrival of the Safety Car ended his hopes of making a bid for the lead.

Behind Leon, Fornaroli took fourth, gaining valuable ground in the championship on a frustrating day for the three leaders. Like Lindblad, Gabriele Mini and Luke Browning also failed to score, though they at least saw the chequered flag.

After losing a place to Browning on the first lap yesterday, Mini ensured he kept his advantage today and ended the first lap 13th. On lap three Mari Boya, who had already moved up five places at the start, claimed another from Browning and began applying pressure to Mini.

The trio picked their way past Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak over the course of the race, but were unable to move into points contention. Boya took 11th off Mini shortly before the Safety Car appeared.

Ahead of them, Mansell took fifth from Ramos, Callum Voisin and Nikita Bedrin. Oliver Goethe performed a superb lunge on Dino Beganovic at turn one to claim ninth place.

Tsolov’s victory is his third this season and first in a feature race. He will not take part in next week’s round at Spa-Francorchamps, however, as he serves his ban for competing in the Eurocup-3 round at the same circuit earlier this year.
