Jeez Ferrari are actually in range of overtaking Red Bull too.

That’s what they deserve for keeping Perez. With all due respect to Perez (he is responsible for their first title in 8 years) he has been way off for too long. Makes their driver programme look stupid too. Including retaining Riccardo

Keeping Perez in the car will give them long-term more development time. Let’s be honest: No one really cares about the WCC, especially not RedBull. Thus, their approach seems fine.
Addme (@dontme)
1st September 2024, 19:12
Actually, a lot of people care about the WCC. Not to mention that usually the fastest car wins, not the fastest driver.
Doh
2nd September 2024, 0:59
I don’t care much for the wcc. It’s the reason F1 isn’t really a sport, racing, or a competition. Only very rarely, in specific scenarios, amongst a few drivers is it ever anything close to that.
But how does keeping Perez offer more long term development time? That really makes no sense. Perez isn’t like verstappen, fast regardless of car issues and able to really show a cars weakness.
Redbull has fallen back and become worse during this “long term development” under Perez.
Make it make sense

I care about the WCC, even more so than the WDC. It’s a team sport in the end.
It’s like caring about the football club table versus the top scorer table. Although I do understand that some people see it more like tour cycling, in which the individual table counts for more than the team one.

Its up to Red Bull to run the next races perfectly, or loose the WDC. If Red Bull does the best they can, they will win WDC, if they continue to screw up, Max will be 2nd.
Just curious, who did Red Bull hire from last year’s Ferrari team?
Ambrogio Isgro
1st September 2024, 17:14
Nope. McLaren is fastest and has two drivers able to extract the maximum from the car. Red Bull had to blame themselves for retaining Perez

1st September 2024, 15:30
Seriously McLaren… learned nothing from Spa. They give Piastri the worst strategy every single race. If you want to run 2 stop, pit him fast and early. Not that hard.
BasCB (@bascb)
1st September 2024, 15:39
It seems they still are lacking a look at the bigger picture. Surely had they just gone for leading with both cars from the start they could have paced their races to make the tyres last. Now first they gave up terrain with fighting between their cars, made Norris pit to overtake when he would have most likely got Leclerc that same lap and then they gave up the lead from Piastri to Leclerc, they should have at least tried to keep him there to hold on to the end.
Ajaxn
1st September 2024, 15:55
Yeah, that last call was strange. McLaren was on the radio asking if Piastri could stay out, but he was bemoning his tires, so they had to bring him in.

Their drivers don’t deserve a WDC.
I find it hilarious that Lando, only having a paltry two wins going into this race despite having the fastest car for most of the season now, had 7 driver of the days coming into this race (fan vote). Obviously, fan votes are dominated by the British audience, but it shows how low the expectations are for the guy.
OT: jealous of how multilingual all these drivers are, especially anyone who’s ever driven for Ferrari.

The story of that race was in fact, Russell. Had he kept his position and not gambled earlier on, Ferrari would have been where we expected and forced into a more conservative strategy. His early Pit gave hope to those in close contention.
These things add up.

1st September 2024, 15:37
McLaren were the fastest at Spa, at Zadvoort, and at Monza, and yet, only won 1 of those races. Add there the Silverstone and Hungary, and it’s only 2 out of 5, where they were clearly the fastest car. You can argue that Austria and Canada were close, so that’s down to many circumstances, but the last 5 races they were clearly the fastest. And yet, all they have to show for that is 2 wins.

1st September 2024, 15:38
Closing the gap by only 8 points proves Norris simply isn’t WDC quality. This was a shot to get it close to 50 points and he’s fumbled again.
My worst case scenario was Norris only gaining 10 points today if he won and Verstappen got P3. He actually performed worse than that. Dreadful.
David (@nvherman)
1st September 2024, 15:42
If Ferrari had pitted Leclerc again, and not chanced the one-stop strategy, Norris would’ve been second and gained a further three points.
He still managed to get the point for the fastest lap on the last lap, so could’ve been worse, given that he took it away from Verstappen
Ajaxn
1st September 2024, 15:51
Agreed!
With so much riding on that extra point, you would have thought Verstappen would have doubled down on that fastest lap, instead, he was foolishly trying to catch Hamilton, who in turn was conserving his tires.
The real difference is McLaren. You can bet Red Bull in that position would have called team orders. Still, it’s not as if McLaren lost any points from the order their drivers finished.
Doh
1st September 2024, 16:16
Exactly. He could have been 3 points closer to max had they switch Norris and piastri. Especially once the win was not possible anymore
Now on paper 10 points per race is enough for Norris. But realistically can it be that easy? Reliability and better form for redbull can easily put a spanner in those works.
SteveP
1st September 2024, 17:00
Eight races (plus 3 x that short thing) and 62 points to match – 7.75 per race on average (with some adjustment for the 3 x extra)
Leclerc is the one needing a tad over 10 per race (ignoring the short things, like we do)
Patrick (@paeschli)
1st September 2024, 21:00
If Red Bull truly has only the fourth fastest car while McLaren has the fastest, they will win both championships as long as they get the strategy right some of the time (which even McLaren should be able to manage)
Doh
2nd September 2024, 1:06
Wow Stevep, I had no idea Charles was that close. Well the don’t look to be able to compete regularly with McLaren do Ferrari but if they can do something about that quick then hey let’s believe it possible.
As much as Ferrari is awkward with strategy (even in this race they won they pitted Charlie relatively short for a one stop) if they can develop fast and contend for wins I believe in Charles for a the title more than Norris.

Yup. Absolutely dreadful at maximising opportunities. Norris is Mr Inconsistency. There’s no other word to describe his season so far. McLaren also carry their half of the failure, but for his own part, Lando has been absolutely inconsistent.
Pinak Ghosh (@pinakghosh)
1st September 2024, 16:31
Is it nerves – because at this rate he will get a reputation of a lap 1 disaster. I think Norris needs to take a close hard look at Multi21 and do what Vettel did to Webber. At this race, he should have pushed Oscar into the gravel, instead of giving the better line to to next turn.
Nick T.
1st September 2024, 16:54
All you need to know about Norris is that he’s a driver who says “oh, it’s too wet to be safe” multiple times and he constantly chokes. He’s fast, but you need to be more than just fast in this game. Two miserable drivers in the cool down room. Hilarious.
Meanwhile, Piastri desperately needed to do something special as he’s been looking especially average lately. Yet McLaren threw it away and now it just makes both the drivers and teams look average. I’ll give credit to McLaren to being fantastic on executing the actual stops, but it’s not very helpful when you constantly flub strategy.

Lando&McLaren is the polar opposite of the 2012 Alonso&Ferrari. So little consistency and so pathetic at maximising opportunities.

1st September 2024, 16:57
Or 2010. Both seasons combined some horrific luck, rules that have changed and Grosjean to deny him WDCs that were about 50x more deserved than Vettel. Oh well. And, now sadly at 43, he’s still one of the best on the grid, but it seems like he’s finally starting to lose some of that amazing natural speed.

The rookie Williams driver drove the best race he could have after the qualifying error. No 20,000km of preseason testest like Hamilton and other rookies got in the past.. he really did great today.

The limits on testing that were introduced have arguably made the next generation overall better drivers. They are forced to learn through sim work and data which is not easy. Driving on a SIM takes away most of the feel from actual driving and it’s forces you to develop a sixth sense and to be in tune with all parameters and data

Norris could have been within 52 points of Verstappen with 8 races to go. He’s now at 62.
Part of winning the championship is putting pressure on the other team to make mistakes.
Nothing says we believe you can do it more than letting your teammate finish ahead of you when you might have a chance at a championship:-) McLaren seems to have faith in Lando but it appears that faith doesn’t fully extend into Formula 1.
Ben
1st September 2024, 16:43
He could be less than that.
Being ruthless in Hungry would have given him another 8 as would playing it safer with Verstappen in Austria, that’s 16 before we even mention the lack of leadership in Silverstone.
It could and should be around 36-40 points. Personally I’ve lost all faith in any kind of Championship battle now. I see people mentioning only needing 10 points more than Max per race and I believed it before today, but now I don’t. He just isn’t WDC material yet.

Some teams did a hilarious bad job at strategy:
-McLaren (do I need to explain)
-Aston Martin throwing away an easy 9th place by doing a two stop as well as failing to tell Alonso he needed to push to ensure he was within the 10 second window on the last lap. What a waste of an effort.

I was surprised to see Sauber at the bottom of the WCC with zero points. DO they still have the rule that teams which score zero have to pay their own transport costs the following season, instead ofit coming out of the central pot. And if so, does that coint towards the capped budget or it it allowed as an extra. If the rule still applies I think it is somewhat unfair as it just makes it even harder for struggling teams to bridge the gap to the grandee teams at the other end of the table.
