FIA ban Magnussen from next F1 round after collecting 12 penalty points

Kevin Magnussen has been banned from the next round of the world championship after incurring 12 penalty points on his racing licence.

The Haas driver collected 10 points in the space of just five rounds earlier this year. He avoided collecting any further points over the next nine rounds, despite his involvement in a huge, multi-car crash which stopped the Monaco Grand Prix.

However Magnussen’s clash with Pierre Gasly at the Roggia chicane during today’s race earned him two penalty points, putting him on a total of 12.

The FIA confirmed in a statement that “as the driver of car 20 [Magnussen] has accrued 12 penalty points… the superlicence of the driver of car 20 must be suspended for the next competition.”

Magnussen is the first F1 driver to be banned for collecting 12 penalty points on his superlicence. However the ban has been applied four times in Formula 2.

Mahaveer Raghunathan was the first F2 driver to be banned in this way, in 2019. Three drivers then collecting bans in 2022 for accumulating 12 penalty points: Oliver Caldwell, Amaury Cordeel and Roy Nissany.

The last F1 driver to be banned from an event was Romain Grosjean in 2012, before the current penalty points system was introduced.

Haas have not indicated who will replace Magnussen at the next round in Baku. However their reserve driver Oliver Bearman is due to race for the team this year and has already made his F1 debut as a substitute for Carlos Sainz Jnr at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, where he finished seventh.

Magnussen was also given a 10-second time penalty for the incident. He criticised the decision on his radio. “Neither cars have damage,” said Magnussen. “No consequence at all. Ten seconds. Makes sense.”

Both Haas drivers were given two penalty points on their licences during the race. Nico Hulkenberg was penalised for causing a collision with Yuki Tsunoda, who subsequently retired.

Daniel Ricciardo in the second RB was given one penalty point for forcing Hulkenberg off at the approach to Ascari on the first lap of the race.

  1. So FIA had courage to hand out enough penalty points for 12, after all.
    Tbh, I’d totally forgotten he was on 10, so I didn’t think about the penalty points situation when his 10-second penalty got confirmed.
    Oh well, Ollie Bearman gets another opportunity before becoming a full-time driver.

        1. Have to agree with this, if anything I’m surprised more people don’t come here to complain about this, I will probably have seen 100 complaints about jere by simon.

    2. yeah, he got banned so Ollie could get a drive, that really is it in a nutshell, everything else is garbage hearsay. Not saying anything against OB, but the stewarding is a joke, and the FIA are as corrupt as anything else.

    It had to happen eventually. If they don’t ban him now, as harsh as it may be, the penalty points system has lost all purpose (if it ever had any).

    1. Like the 107% rule. Even a car that hadnt driven a single session in a season was allowed to start

  4. Good, he’s already had a few times where he did not get those points. This time out there were 2 or 3 moves that were really questionable from him again. Magnussen really shows exactly what the penalty points system is for – a driver who just keeps making these kind of decisions on track.

    Deserved that ban and now it’s there. Good that the Stewards didn¨t shy away from their responsibility.

        1. Max would never get a ban. That’s for sure. He is too important to the sport, sponsors, etc. and has a fanbase that, while not nearly as rabid as Lewis’, would go pretty wild.

            I’m less convinced. If it looked justifiable then the amount of publicity it would generate would be huge. Along with the debates between the for’s and aganst’s and the I don’t give a …..’s.

    One could strongly disagree for which situation points are handed out (and how many), but in overall one can hardly disagree that the ban is justified.

    1. That’s the thing with the penalty points system, even if you get a couple of “soft” points the cumulative effect is such that, if you collect enough to get a ban, you probably deserve it. Magnussen is the first to cop a race ban but ought not to be – Gasly should have had one a year or so ago and there are others who have also come close but then suddenly magically stopped attracting points or had them dubiously rescinded.

  10. It was a fantastic race for Magnussen. Also, I’m a fan of automatic +10 seconds to prevent drivers passing off track knowing only a 5 second penalty is worth not sitting behind a slower car, but the auto 10 second penalty for a little racing contact is really stupid.

    Also, zero discretion in how they hand out penalties for violating how they serve a penalty is equally absurd. How, wow, he touched the wing as DR pulled in. So what? I’d get if you touched the car early to begin the stop, but please allow some flexibility for common sense.

  12. I’m not a big fan of Kev, but just like in the past when they didn’t hand penalty points when they should, I feel this teeny tiny incident shouldn’t mean 2 points on his licence. Did that move put anyone at risk? was it a blatant transgression of the rules? was it unsportmanlike? Or was it just a racing incident?

    If accumulating penalty points result on a ban, they must be handed for serious stuff, not for battling for position which is the essence of racing. Just a time penalty was more than enough…

    1. Yeah. F1’s rules are sort of one big joke. They should ban drivers like they did to Grosjean when needed for outrageous behavior. But that penalty + the whole system is a joke. However, because of how Magnussen’s points have generally been earned, I don’t consider this some big injustice at all. He’s earned it, unlike some of the drivers who came close to a ban.

      BTW, let’s not forget Magnussen, who I think doesn’t merit a place on the grid, did put in a great drive today and scored a point. I bet Haas will be about a lot happier with that point than they’ll be caring about a one round ban.

      1. Yes, a good race indeed, he kept alonso behind in the end, and was the only one apart from albon to get into the points without a top car, it’s not unthinkable that haas might not have the pace to be in the points next race, making the ban unimpactful.

        I have to say I’m surprised they gave him enough points to reach 12 though, for example I was sure they’d have only given 1 point for a minor infraction like this given he had 10 already, and given they usually jump through hoops to not ban drivers this way.

        1. Magnussen, for obvious reasons, has zero sympathy in the paddock right now. So, I’m not surprised at all they avoided giving him two points. Isn’t the number of points for this type of incident already established though? Was one-point even an option? I have no idea as I haven’t really paid attention to how much various incidents have netted individually.

      I fully agree. However as other have also stated, KMag really did deserve a ban by now given the number of quite justifiable infractions. It is unfortunate that it gets imposed through a law of averages type approach, but better that than not at all IMO.

      Of course it would be a different matter if one were ever able to establish that the points for this minor incident were intentionally given to trigger the ban rather than purely for the incident alone. (Not that I believe this to be the case, though I suppose it has equal credibility to the regular suggestion that points were not given to avoid the ban).

    But that aside why did Magnussen get a 10 second penalty for a racing incident where he tried a move & made a bit of contact but Ricciardo only got 5 seconds for pushing another car onto the grass at 200mph which was far more dangerous & unnecessary?

    And putting that aside the whole penalty point system in F1 is silly & unnecessary.

    If somebody does something dangerous, intentional or whatever then penalise them for that. Having even minor infractions that don’t warrant a penalty award points just always seemed wrong & unnecessary and often lets the bigger incidents go by without much penalty.

    I mean go back to 2012 & under the pathetic penalty point system the ridiculous move Grosjean pulled at the start at Spa likely wouldn’t have resulted in the ban he got as he wouldn’t have had 12 points. Just highlights how dumb the current system is.

    1. But then i get the modern Netflix show over sport fans have been pushed the narrative that racing incidents don’t exist & that somebody needs to be blamed for every minor thing because thats all we’ve had in the show over sport Liberty era.

      Dumb penalties handed out for things which were once deemed racing incidents that wouldn’t have been investigated & would have been very quickly forgotten.

      Liberty have made the show that used to be a SPORT toxic in that regard.

    Some of those penalty point has become a joke, if not that its sad for F1.
    The Gsaly incident ….10s?? + 2 point, really?
    F1 has become woke, everything is a problem, racing left the arena!
