In the round-up: Red Bull motorsport consultant Helmut Marko believes Aston Martin could be becoming an increasingly attractive prospect for Max Verstappen.

In brief

Aston Martin has ‘everything’ to woo Verstappen

Despite Verstappen being under contract at Red Bull until at least 2028, Marko believes rivals Aston Martin could become a tempting prospect for the multiple world champion now they have signed Adrian Newey.

“Max races where he can win,” Marko told Kleine Zeitung.

“Aston Martin has the most modern factory, their wind tunnel will go into operation next year, and Honda engines will be added as well. Everything is really in place. And if you look at history, it’s clear: everywhere Newey has gone, there’s been an upward trend. I don’t see why it should be any different at Aston Martin.

“He knows he can win titles with us as well, if we can still get this championship over the line. That is an absolute must.”

Sainz warned for Perez incident

Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz Jnr has received a formal warning from the Azerbaijan Grand Prix stewards after they deemed him to have impeded Sergio Perez at the fast kink of turn 13 in second practice.

After investigating the incident, the stewards determined Sainz had been “distracted by a variety of alarms on the car” and had “misjudged the closing speed” of the Red Bull.

As Perez stated in the hearing that he felt the incident “did not end up being particularly dangerous”, the stewards chose to give Sainz a warning.

BMW quickest in WEC Fuji practice

BMW’s number 15 team of Dries Vanthoor, Raffaele Marciello and Marco Wittmann set the pace at the end of Friday’s practice sessions for this weekend’s Six Hours of Fuji. Vanthoor’s best time of 1’29.577 was only six-thousandths of a second quicker than the number five Penske Porsche, while the number two Cadillac were third-fastest, just 0.015s behind.

AF Corse’s number 83 Ferrari were fourth after winning the last event at Circuit of the Americas, while the fastest Toyota was the number seven car in ninth place. Qualifying for the penultimate round of the WEC season takes place early this morning.

Comment of the day

With Red Bull team principal Christian Horner expressing his bemusement that Adrian Newey attended a press conference announcing his move to Aston Martin while still technically under gardening leave from Red Bull, AlanD believes Horner has a right to be upset…

I think Red Bull are right to be irritated. There is nothing wrong with making the announcement, that happens every year with drivers and key tech staff, but what they can’t do is go to the factory and take part in PR events while still on the payroll of their current team. You my remember there was a similar outcry some years back when Button jumped ship to McLaren and did a PR event for them before his contract was up with Brawn at the end of the year. I’m sure it would be just as true in your own job. Try telling your own employer that you are going to work for a day at one of your main competitors. They will not be happy! And PR events are still work, it is all part of the chase for sponsorship.

  1. Loved that Race of Champions back in ’83 for the racing but also for the variety of drivers. Would much rather have more of those than whatever those sprint things are called nowadays.

  2. Distracted by a variety of alarms isn’t an excuse to drive slowly in an unclear manner or on the racing line, though.

Indeed an interesting duel & somewhat funny as well.

  3. They should woo me. I feel like I have a WDC in me.

  4. That ‘83 Williams looks gorgeous. And that was such a wild season. It had as much or more on and off the track drama that any season in F1 history.

    1. I know that many tracks like Brands are not raced at for a reason (safety or that the cars have outgrow the track). I’d still like to see such an event a lot more than a sprint! Even if it doesn’t have the infrastructure, it would be nice to have some sort of demo at Watkins Glen. There are contractual issues there, too.

  5. Max and Alonso? what a line up! Oh, wait, Lance still needs a seat..

  6. As great as Max is, it would be just Alonso’s luck if he has him for a team mate in 2026. I’d prefer to see Max in a lesser car showing us what he can do, but falling short against Alonso.
