Less swearing? FIA wants F1 to reverse its usual team radio priorities

Formula 1

It was once a standing joke among Formula 1 race engineers that if they wanted to tell their driver something on the radio but ensure the crucial information was not played out on the world feed for all to hear, there was only one thing they had to do:

Swear.

Whether many of them actually did bookend their vital set-up chatter with enough profanity to make Guenther Steiner blanch is unknown. But what is clear is this approach wouldn’t work today.

Wheel-to-wheel racing action may get overlooked in favour of tiresome crowd shots, but you can’t accuse F1’s television director of allowing fans to miss those all-important F-bombs (see the transcript below for an example).

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem is not a fan, however, and admitted this week he has urged F1 to tone down the bad language (or, as some mystifyingly insist on calling it, ‘language’). “They say the ‘f’ word how many times per minute?” he asked.

Max Verstappen, Red Bull, Singapore, 2024
Report: “Don’t broadcast it”: Verstappen bemused by Ben Sulayem’s swearing complaints
But here’s the thing: If you’re watching F1 via the world feed alone, as the vast majority of viewers no doubt do, you wouldn’t necessarily be in a position to know. F1 may broadcast team radio clips which include swearing, but it is invariably ‘bleeped’ out.

Which begs the question: What exactly is there to get offended about here? Playing the drivers’ messages out but censoring the inappropriate language is a reasonable balance which F1 has adhered to for years.

For those who want to hear what the drivers have to say unfiltered, F1 TV’s onboard camera channels exist. But even this is no longer completely free of censorship.

Since last year FOM has censored some team radio messages on the onboard camera feeds. Significantly, these messages are not ‘bleeped’ but erased entirely, so the viewer has no way of knowing if they have missed something.

Report: Hamilton urges more action on human rights after letter from death row inmate
FOM routinely resorts to this after a driver suffers a crash. Both Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz Jnr’s radio feeds were muted on their onboard feeds following their penultimate lap crash in Baku last weekend, although their radio clips were subsequently broadcast over the world feed. How much of what they said was censored, if any, is impossible to tell.

But as FOM is already censoring drivers’ messages in two different ways, surely no further limits are needed? This is another example of the FIA’s recent preoccupation with telling drivers what they can and cannot say.

Punishing the use of discriminatory language and preventing abuse of FIA staff is justifiable. But the FIA has also threatened drivers with sporting penalties for making political statements – in reaction to their expressions of support for important issues such as the climate and equal rights – and vastly increased the fines it can impose on them. That is far more troubling than drivers expressing their frustration by uttering an expletive.

Verstappen’s Hungarian GP radio transcript and portions broadcast on world feed

Max Verstappen’s complete team radio communications from the Hungarian Grand Prix is transcribed below. The portions highlighted in yellow show what was played on the world television vision and how it was edited or censored. FOM played six of the seven swear words used by Verstappen on the world feed, all of which were ‘bleeped’.

Verstappen Why don’t they just say what they think and then we decide. That’s just bullshit.
Lambiase So recommend we give that place back into turn one, Max.
Verstappen Okay, so you can just run people off the track then. You can tell the FIA that’s how we’re going to race from now onwards. Just drive people off the road.

  1. FIA has far more important matters to worry about than something trivial, not to mention entirely harmless.

    1. They should be monitoring drivers at all times and install a chip that shocks the drivers anytime they use an expletive.

  2. It’s not the FIA: it’s FIA’s president, that has several times already displayed a cultural set that is not fit for neither such an important international organisation nor the 21sr century.

    1. I’m not convinced it’s entirely him, although I’m sure there is an amount from him, perhaps in majority. Censorship is the new normal. The problem is when you give an inch, bit by bit they will take a mile. Greed for power and control is ever present wether it’s the FIA or countless governments.

Funnily, it’s road talk, street talk.
It has nothing to do with the color of people, like Hamilton tried to put the attention to.
Yes it’s what rappers use – white ones too- and logically, as it’s about their life of living outside of the priviledged class, and on the streets.
Pointless to say they should stick to bible phrases, as that is the talk of the upper class.

Now what was it about road relevance again?

  4. I thought F1TV onboard channels were live, so it’s impossible to censor them, unless they’re actually delayed?

I think this is ridiculous. F1 is a not Teletubbies FFS. And we’re not living in the Victorian era anymore. Sex, drugs and violence has been the mainstream source of entertainment since the late 60s. F1 is very sanitized compared to most stuff people watch. Or do you think the upcoming Brad Pitt film will be free of swearing and obscenity? No way. At least I hope so. Nobody wants to see 1h10min “Ben Sulayem cut” of the movie :p

    1. @leksa The OnBoards are live but for the past year or so they have been delaying the team radio & even not broadcasting some at all.

For instance last weekend when Perez & Sainz crashed we heard some radio from Perez on the world-feed but that radio communication wasn’t played on the F1TV onboard feed.

    2. The Brad Pitt film won’t be shown in TVat 2pm in the afternoon. And it will have some form of classification for age.

This is the problem that the broadcasters face. If it becomes uncensored effing and blinding.

Personally I think it’s fine with what they do at the moment with the radio replays. The live feeds – I think if they don’t censor them and the swearing becomes excessive, they’ll either have to take them off air, delay them, or stop it altogether, all of which are not ideal, so I get the point.

Ben Sulayem just seems to be on a crusade to antagonise people into submission though. Going on about rappers was unnecessary – there was absolutely no need to make that comparison. He could just explain what he’s trying to do and why he’s trying to do it. It reminds me of the Balestre era.

As for Verstappen in the press conference, that was stupid and churlish. It might be OK in his country, but in most countries you don’t swear on TV or in a press conference.

  5. I would understand Liberty complaining about this, although I don’t agree, but I can’t quite understand why the FIA has opinions on broadcasting matters that can easily be dealt with without involving the drivers. I feel there is something more to this.

    1. Eaxctly. FIA is the body that governs motorsport, not polices culture and human behaviour. It’s absurd they feel entitled to even have a stance on that, let alone voice it or act as an authority.

Can you imagine iron hardware producer saying they are not in favour people talking a certain way while using their hammers? It makes no sens in the world.

In 2024, the very idea of language censorship in media is outdated, anachronic and completely detached from reality.

      1. Coventry Climax
        20th September 2024, 14:29

Especially since they express zero concern about going racing in dubious countries.

        1. You mean all the races then?

      2. Most of the world disagrees on that point.

      3. +1

        They’re endlessly exceeding their mandate.

  6. You could send the medical delegate up to see the stewards maybe they can have a look they are all okay. I’m absolutely fine.

Classic Max with the veiled threat of abuse.
