In the round-up: Andrea Kimi Antonelli says he’s targetting race victories for 2025

Winning ‘main goal’ for Antonelli

Mercedes junior driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli says his goal for his rookie season in F1 next year is to try and “bring home some victories.”

“I feel ready for F1,” Antonelli said at the Festival dello Sport.

“In terms of speed, I believe that won’t be an issue. The only thing that will require a lot of work is understanding how to manage the race weekend in the best way possible and learning all the procedures. So, there will be a lot to learn, but I feel ready.

“Certainly, winning a few races would be a dream. It won’t be easy because all the teams have competitive cars, so it will be very difficult, but this is my first goal. Even a few podiums would be good, but the main goal is to bring home some victories.”

Montoya needs “less and less” help from father

F3 racer Sebastian Montoya says he is becoming increasingly confident in his own driving abilities and seeking support from his multiple grand prix winning father Juan Pablo Montoya less and less.

“He kind of taught me everything I know,” Montoya said in response to a question from RaceFans. “I always ask him for advice. It’s honestly really good, but I think now I’m at a point with driving where it’s just small things and nothing big, I hope.

“It’s really beneficial and it’s really helped me a long way. I think now every time I kind of less and less need his help, but obviously I’ll always seek his advice and I’m always listening to what he has to say.”

Asking you how you consume live Formula 1 these days, here’s an extract from Anon A. Mouse chronicling how their viewing habits have changed over time…

These days I use just about everything available to me.

Back when I first got into watching motorsport in 2009 all I had available in the States was Speed Channel. It began by watching a Grand Am race at Road America and was solidified by watching the ALMS series conclusion. Getting into Formula 1 was purely by chance, as I happened to catch a rebroadcast of Suzuka I think in 2010. Speed Channel carried me for a couple years, but when I went to college I didn’t have TV access so there wasn’t much I could do. But thank goodness for the internet.

When F1 TV came on the scene, and was finally available to the United States, that was yet another game changer for me. That allowed me to watch both the broadcast of the session AND a driver’s onboard. I had long been a fan of race car onboards, stretching back to 2010 when I watched my first Daytona 24H. So to be able to watch F1 onboards in real time was “simply lovely”. Up until 2020ish I would still use a pirated Sky stream for the extras. These days I take advantage of MultiViewer, so I’ve got the race broadcast, track map, timing and scoring (from F1 TV), and MultiViewer’s telemetry on one screen, and a driver’s onboard on another. I’m spoiled.

  1. In terms of speed, I believe that won’t be an issue. The only thing that will require a lot of work is understanding how to manage the race weekend in the best way possible and learning all the procedures. So, there will be a lot to learn, but I feel ready.

And the most annoying and embarrassing of them all to hear: Deal with the pathetic, rubbish, trash, garbage, lousy, abysmal, atrocious, incompetent Pirelli tyres.

    1. @krichelle Lol that was the same thing I thought when reading that sentence. Still George is going to prepare himself Kimi is going 100% for the win.

    2. And prevent himself from getting drawn into the toxic Mercedes environment.

  2. At the very least, he’ll be in the best position to become F1’s next new Grand Prix winner & by quite a margin car performance level-wise.

Yesterday’s SF race was also exciting, even with the SC interventions.
The airborne landing collision reminded me of Karthikeyan-Rosberg in the 2012 Abu Dhabi GP.
A good drive by De Vries in his last outing in SF, for the time being at least, especially after the early front wing change after becoming an innocent side victim for Kimura’s error, albeit he unnecessarily forced Yamashita off-track & thus risked his eventual penalty in the first place despite Yamashita having full right to space.
Nojiri was surprisingly slow again, but this time more or less throughout the race distance, so he may have had some developing issue hampering the car’s outright performance.
The championship has quite clearly become Tsuboi’s to lose.
One thing I always cringe at when watching SF race (& qualifying) highlight videos is the amount of English-based loan words with weird pronunciations, which appear countlessly in the Japanese language.

So possibly a temporary livery tweak for Haas.

    1. “Possibly” ??? Can’t get up from the floor, too busy rolling around laughing…

  3. In terms of speed, I believe that won’t be an issue

Quite appropriate about speed not being an issue on this day 12 years ago. But in this case Red Bull as Felix Baumgartner did his “Stratos Jump” from a helium balloon abt. 39klm above the earth’s surface . An unpowered breaking of the sound barrier.

    1. Not just “unpowered”, there wasn’t even human intelligence inside that suit.

So unintelligent he gathered a complete team, including F1 communications specialists, and rigorously prepared and trained for the jump over the course of five consecutive years.

History is not written by safely staying seated on the couch. I bet even Einstein took the journey to his desk to write his things.

        1. While I don’t really see how persistence or ambition to be a protagonist of (another) well-orchastrated multi-billion dollar marketing stint by Red Bull are in any way linked to intelligence I wasn’t at all on about judging his mind based on him jumping off insanely great heights. You know in the end, he fits perfectly within the Red Bull universe based on his beliefs and verbal belches.

So what Antonelli says in the interview puts things in a bit of context, but isn’t it, including the article title, a bit silly?
I mean, that would be the day, a driver getting into F1 without the ambition to win.

That said, I must say it sometimes feels we’re pretty close though, with how things have developped over the last 10, 15 years.

    1. Note that he said it’s his goal for his rookie season, that’s a high bar, depending a lot on the car too.

    2. Not necessarily. The question was specifically about his rookie season, and rookies will have different goals depending on their circumstances and what team they are joining. If they were joining a backmarker team, the goal might be to score points, or score points regularly. If joining a midfield team, the goal might be to score podiums. Or in the event of a rookie joining a dominant team, the goal might be the world championship.

Antonelli’s answer gives some insight into his psychology. I would say that aiming for multiple wins is a good balance between ambition/self-confidence, and realism. However, the goals can quickly change depending on the circumstances at the start of the season. If Mercedes appear to have the fastest car in early races or even pre-season testing, Antonelli’s goals would no doubt shift accordingly.
