Legendary drive from Max Verstappen!

A good drive but he got lucky, he couldn’t pass the cars ahead untill the safety car and subsequent red flag gave him the positions. I feel a better race was in store which the safety car call robbed us from

Crazy how the only race entirely run on wet track – thus lower downforce in general – showed that DRS is only unnecessary when car were not run on max dowforce.

Thoroughly entertaining. Max was absolutely peerless today. He showed why his antics on previous weekends is completely unnecessary. It’s incredible that he was the only driver who could overtake with any consistency. That pretty much puts the championship to bed. Norris isn’t going to win championships with drives like that. Such a shame to see. Stoked for Alpine. Capitalised where everyone around them faltered. I can’t understand why anyone pits before heavy rain is forecast. The red flag is almost guaranteed and you’re just handing a free pitstop to those who don’t.

That Bearman penalty was one of the most absurdly ridiculous things i’ve ever seen.
A 10 second penalty for giving someone a pretty minor tap in which you spin & the guy you tapped loses no time at all.
It’s just further proof that the FIA don’t want to see hard racing anymore & that racing incidents no longer exist because in such situations you are going to see drivers make a bit of contact every now & again & many of those bits of minor contact should be deemed a racing incident with no penalty applied.
It’s just utterly absurd that the incident was even investigated at all.
Additionally I think it’s ridiculous that the aborted start incident isn’t been looked at until after the race. It should be a slam dunk penalty for drivers that ignored the procedure. No reason to wait until after the race for that unless there just looking for a reason to let everyone off which imo makes a compete mockery of the rules & procedures.
I would have given the race a 9/10 but the absurd Bearman penalty & the aborted start nonsense takes it down to a 7/10 for me.

I fear people will overate this drive like no business. It was all ok no defence on any overtakes and lucked in with a red flag. That red bull is a good car in the wet.
Ideals (@ideals)
3rd November 2024, 19:41
Indeed, as we saw from Checo’s commanding drive to 11th all the way from p12 it was fairly obvious this had nothing to do with race craft and was all just down to having a vastly superior car over everyone else.
Glad you caught on to this, lest we give Max some props he doesn’t deserve.
miciek (@micio)
3rd November 2024, 21:03
Perez is just a very bad driver. He was driving 2023 Red Bull and got many bad results.
Just don’t use him as a comparison. We don’t really know how good Max is because he didn’t have any really good, championship material, team mates.
Esploratore (@esploratore1)
4th November 2024, 2:43
We know he’s really good based on the 2021 and early 2022 season for example, vs hamilton and leclerc in similar cars, the best driver in the current era, the only difficulty is the comparison with the other best drivers of all times, since they raced 70 years apart.
Esploratore (@esploratore1)
4th November 2024, 2:44
But there’s no doubt you can’t use perez to say the car is good, need to look at what the best driver can do, else any of us could drive the red bull and say: look, that isn’t a f1 worthy car!
Doh
3rd November 2024, 18:12
Good race but I feel the safety car ruined what would have been a better race. It wasn’t necessary for the conditions, most drivers weren’t even on wet tyres.
Owen Smart (@smartez)
3rd November 2024, 18:18
I would usually agree with you on this. There are many races in the past where I’d agree with this comment. But I don’t agree with you for this race.
The rain was so torrential that you really just couldn’t even see. Doesn’t matter what tyres you’re on at that point, it was just raining way way too much. I think they made the right choice to put out the SC.
Roger Ayles (@roger-ayles)
3rd November 2024, 18:19
Most weren’t on wet tires but it was blatantly obvious that we were on the verge of seeing cars flying off everywhere given just how much water was on the track in places. You could just see that we were on the verge of cars aquaplaning off on the straights as they were just starting to move around a lot in the more flooded places.
Additionally visibility was getting really poor. I had a few onboards up at the time including lando’s in helmet camera and it was at the point where you couldn’t see more than 2-3 metres ahead so that alone was worth throwing the safety car unless you just wanted to wait until you had cars running up the back of one abother?
Nikos (@exeviolthor)
3rd November 2024, 19:00
Did you not see Colapinto crashing under the SC? The conditions were so bad that they should have brought the red flag earlier.
To be fair, it is easier to say this in hindsight.
Owen Smart (@smartez)
3rd November 2024, 18:13
I have to say, I have been highly critical of the FIA and race control over the years with so many unnecessary SC, VSC, Red Flags etc – Belgium 2021, to date, is one of the most diabolical things I’ve witnessed.
I think they nailed it during this race.
They allowed the drivers to race for as long as they could, sensibly put out the safety car when the conditions were really just too much, correctly red flagged it when Colapinto crashed, didn’t waste much time restarting the race when the track conditions were still very wet. In my opinion, they did their best to allow the drivers to race and subsequently, we witnessed one of the best races this year.
Brilliant all around. Interlagos further demonstrating to the world why it should be the last race of the season.
Roger Ayles (@roger-ayles)
3rd November 2024, 18:22
@smartez That was mostly down to really poor visibility so it was the right call not to start it unless you wanted to see cars running into the back of each other at high speed in zero visibility conditions.
And there was also a ton of water on the straight so there would have been aquaplaning which again with near zero visibility in the the spray is simply not safe.
There’s an onboard that was shown on the pit lane channel with george russell driving in a straight line at slow speed and the car suddenly snapping on the straight on the lap to the grid. That simply wasn’t safe and it only started to rain harder after that.

Except they conveniently avoided a penalty for the starting procedure infringement. Overall they had one of their worst weekends in F1 history I would say. Clearly rigging the championship to keep it alive It is time to replace the FIA for a new governing body.

+ 1. Interlagos with good or bad weather is THE best circuit in F1. I have thought so for several years.
Bogolo
4th November 2024, 5:12
There was a point where, before the safety car was signalled, they flashed a “wet circuit” graphic. I thought they would instruct all drivers on inters to go full wet.
It was a bit unfair for those that went full wet for them not to gain that advantage at that point.

10/10
Truely a bizarre but super Sunday and a long one too.
Some of my takeaways:
1. Daddy I’m beached!
2. A rogue formation lap begins without the permission of race control.
3. Removal of one lap from the race should not have happened.
3. Another poor start from Lando and bit of bad luck with the VSC
4. Perez drops down again. Today he lost to both Vcarbs.
5. Hamilton’s and Sainz had a torrid time.
6. Safety car to neutralize the race under heavy rain and not VSC?
7. 3 accidents in one day for Williams. That’s a big bill on a tight wallet.
8. Black flag was necessary? It was last seen in 2007 I guess.
9. Bearman 10 second penalty was not deserved. There was no net impact on Collapinto.
10. Sauber would wish they have one weekend like Alpine. Even in the rain, they were invisible.
11. A master’s drive from Verstappen.

3rd November 2024, 18:37
It was a really good race but it was nowhere near been one of the best races ever or anything mainly because I can think of other races both wet & dry that featured a lot more close racing, wheel to wheel action and/or great overtaking.
Suzuka 2005 comes to mind as does something like Silverstone 2003, Brazil 2016 or even China 2009 which was a bit wetter but featured a lot more competitive racing fights & overtakes.

The simple fact the are looking at the infraction on the rules by norris, russell, tsunoda and piastri who all started while yellow is a show of being ibcapable.
Clear rule clear penalty.
Why after the race?
Afraid to penalize norris?
Bart
5th November 2024, 8:10
Under normal conditions a penalty for starting under yellow lights is obvious. But the conditions weren’t normal. Stroll had spun and the drivers were expecting either a race start or another formation lap, instead it was aborted.
Also the drivers did not attempt a race start. They were slowly rolling away as one would do for another formation lap. There was no danger whatsoever. I think the fine and reprimand was the correct penalty under these conditions.
In a way we should be happy there was no immediate penalty, as it would have spoiled the race.

McLarens downfall must be studied. So many bad decisions and errors on the wall and in the car. Maybe they don’t beat Verstappen today because he was on another level today. But they pretty much sent him room service.

1/10
An absolute farce. Why send out a safety car when drivers are clearly able to drive fast on heavy wets? This could have been Tsunoda’s day but it was ruined by race control. If it’s too wet for inters, yet the drivers refuse to switch, then black-flag them all or whatever but don’t ruin the race for those that made all the right calls.
David BR (@david-br)
3rd November 2024, 19:55
The race was red-flagged after Colapinto crashed and the car had to be moved and the track cleared. Correct call I thought. As for the full wets, true, the option would be good, but they’re seen as practically useless by the drivers (as Hamilton pointed out yesterday).
Esploratore (@esploratore1)
4th November 2024, 2:51
A thing to note is that when they were in the 1.24-1.25s they were using intermediates this year, while in 2016 they were using full wets and reached 1.25 in the end, while this season’s full wets don’t seem to do better than 1.28, so the full wets just got worse in these 8 years? Not a good look for pirelli.
kuvemar
4th November 2024, 9:28
Not talking about the red flag. Everyone was on inters, Tsunoda was on full wets. He was gaining 2 seconds per sector and was on his way to winning the race since he would either drive circles around everyone or inheret the lead anyways when everyone would have to pit for full wets. He had no problems with the conditions, so the full wets worked in that situation. But because nobody else wanted to switch, they deployed the safety car as the conditions were undriveable for those on inters.
Refusing to switch to the correct tires should be treated as dangerous driving in a situation like that.

Why can they change tires on red flags? it just doesn’t make any sense. If you need to change tyres, you just go in with the safety car when the race is restarted.
Jordan (@hunkulese)
3rd November 2024, 21:27
How did so many people enjoy watching that? It was an awful race on an awful surface, and red flags give way too big of an advantage. The entire race was decided by drivers going off by themselves. Sure, Max proved he’s miles ahead of everyone else, but in no way was it an enjoyable day of watching F1.
Phil Norman (@phil-f1-21)
3rd November 2024, 23:35
Thoroughly enjoyable. 9/10. I have never been a Max fan but he really did demonstrate was he’s a three time champion. In all likelihood four time now with his extended lead. Lando probably has the best car but is just not up to it.

Wow!! Quite a range of views on this race.
I think I sit somewhere in the middle. Sure it was entertaining, I – begrudgingly – acknowledge the incredible drive by Max (not diminished at all in my opinion by the fact that things went more his way in the race than elsewhere in the weekend). And some heart-warming outcomes, particularly the Alpine result.
I struggle to understand what would make this a 10/10 race though. Even a 9/10 seems high, though given the comments above I can at least get an idea why some might lean that way.
I think I will have to look back and see whether I am somewhat harsher on these races where I have to get up early to watch the race before work.
Andrew (@andrewsf1)
4th November 2024, 6:22
Do you have F1TV? If yes and you can avoid hearing/ seeing the results during the day then it’s much more comfotable to watch after work when you can skip all red flags/ safety cars. Also Verstappen was one of the drivers with a helmet cam this weekend which unfortunately was only used for maybe 25% of the race but still an enjoyable onboard to watch after the main broadcast.
ChrisJ (@chriju0411)

Decided on a 9 because I’d like to see the drivers drive in the conditions they’re given, not just throw a SC while everyone is still running and only 5 drivers put the full wet tyres, I’m sure back in the 80s or 90s they’d have let them race even in that moment.
Still a very very good race, really liked it, but there’s margin of improvement in terms of tyres\spray management, at least it was a race where slicks were never suitable, in fact it was a quali + race where slicks were never suitable and that counts for something, sort of like spa 2021, which was a big missed opportunity.
Esploratore (@esploratore1)
4th November 2024, 2:57
Also a very unpredictable race, it was somewhat predictable that verstappen could recover to the top places, but the start, the restart, the drivers who crashed, the SC, red flag made it very difficult to know what would happen till towards the end.
Esploratore (@esploratore1)
4th November 2024, 2:58

We need more attention to the sub par and subjective job Race Control is doing. This weekend was rigged to 2021 levels once again after an already questionable outing for them in Mexico and Austin. They are not even trying to hide anymore that they slow down the leader and advantage the challenger. It is a disgrace and a travesty that such practices go without consequences.
