Former Formula 1 team principal Eddie Jordan has revealed he was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.

The 76-year-old revealed his condition in the Formula For Success podcast he co-hosts with ex-Formula 1 driver David Coulthard.

“Way back in March and April I was diagnosed with bladder and prostate cancer, and then it spread into the spine and the pelvis so it was quite aggressive,” said Jordan.

He described his condition as being similar to that suffered by the Olympic gold medal winning cyclist Sir Chris Hoy, who revealed in October he has terminal cancer.

“And we’ve all heard about our wonderful friend, Sir Chris Hoy, who’s an absolute megastar, and he is coming out and talking about illnesses such as like what I’ve got, but he’s a far younger man.”

Jordan encouraged listeners not to hesitate to get tested for cancer. “Don’t waste or put it off,” he said. “Go and get tested.

“Because in life, you’ve got chances. And there is so much medical advice out there and so many things that you can do to extend your time. Go and do it. Don’t be stupid, don’t be shy – it’s not a shy thing – look after your body, guys.”

He admitted he had gone through difficult times since receiving his diagnoses. “Some very dark days in there, but we pulled out of it, thankfully.”

He began his motor racing career in the seventies racing karts and later founded Eddie Jordan Racing. He enjoyed success in Formula 3 and Formula 3000, running future grand prix winners such as Johnny Herbert and Jean Alesi.

Jordan moved his team into F1 in 1991 and by the end of the decade they had scored their first grand prix victories. However he sold the team to Midland Group in the mid-noughties as the cost of competing in F1 escalated.

Since then he has worked as an F1 television pundit and manager. Adrian Newey appointed him to handle the negotiations which led to the designer’s move to Aston Martin – the current identity of Jordan’s former team – earlier this year.

  1. I was unaware until today, but get well soon.

  2. Prostate cancer is incredibly common among older men, but very treatable if caught early. My Dad was diagnosed with it last year; sadly he passed away from an unrelated condition before he could receive treatment. My maternal grandfather was also treated for prostate cancer 10 years or so ago; happily, he is still with us. So I am very much aware that it could happen to me, too, though I’m not currently old enough to be in an at-risk category.

Short version – get yourselves tested, men of a certain age! And respect to Eddie for publicising his own diagnosis; I can only hope he gets the treatment he needs and enjoys a decent quality of life.

    1. My father got prostate cancer and then got the DaVinci Surgery only for a totally unrelated cancer to come out of nowhere and kill him in months. He was fit and relatively young. Life is not fair.

      Best wishes to Eddie.

  3. I don’t know if Eddie visits this corner of the internet, but I don’t think anyone would mind if I said we all send our best wishes.

He strikes me as someone who actually enjoys motor racing. For all the people that have passed through the ever rotating door of F1, I think he’s gave far more than he’s took. I don’t think you can ask for much more from someone. I hope he’s around throwing cats at pigeons and enjoying himself for a good while yet.

    1. Indeed, and he’s the one who brought schumacher in f1 too.

  4. Sad news. Eddie gave Michael his first F1 drive.

  5. well that’s sad news. I was wondering why he was talking about family so much on his podcast recently.

  6. Eddie’s advice is the best.
Same goes for spots on skin, moles etc. unexplained constipation or bleeding etc.
There is currently no cure for prostate cancer that has spread to the bones. This can aso be known as stage 4 prostate cancer, or metastatic bone cancer Treatment can help relieve pain, improve quality of life, and extend life expectancy.
The brutal reality although is that although estimates vary approx 73% may have up to 1 year survival rate. Other studies show up to 33% having up to 5 years.
There are exceptions someone very close to me got a 3 year expectation for stage 4 bowel cancer back in 2015 and is still here (minus a few bits and pieces each year, plus chemo, radiation etc)
So best wishes for what you can make of it Eddie
Spreading the warning may be one of your better achievements.

    All the best for Eddie

  8. Sad news indeed. Was a little disappointed when Jordan pulled out of F1. Thought he and his team brought a refreshing element of flamboyance to the grid. Bitten/Hisses Buzzing/Hornets they were great looking cars and really stood out. Mugen Honda and Peugeot.

  9. Eddie, go learn about Joe Tippens’s protocol for cancer treatment. Go learn how Clif High cured himself from colon cancer. You’re welcome.
