Welcome to Tuesday’s edition of the RaceFans round-up.

Comment of the day

Will Max Verstappen ever race for a non-Red Bull Formula 1 team? So far a clear majority of you think so:

I am sure Max would like Red Bull to give him the best car in the field for many more years, and if they do, there is no good reason to change teams. If/when they won’t be able to do this, then there is far less reason to stay, Max has nothing like nostalgia or pink glasses for not team (it’s not the same as drivers dreaming of once getting into Ferrari red), so why would he not leave if other teams offer better possibilities.

Off course he could just stop racing F1 if he feels like it, but that’s a different story then.

Rafael Villagomez completes Van Amersfoort Racing’s 2025 FIA Formula 2 line-up (Van Amersfoort)

'Van Amersfoort Racing (VAR) is pleased to announce that Rafael Villagomez will continue with the team for the 2025 FIA Formula 2 season, marking his second campaign in the Championship. The Mexican driver will race alongside John Bennett, finalizing VAR’s line-up for the season.'

Inside Verstappen’s long-term goal to make F1 drivers out of sim racers (The New York Times)

'Everyone always thinks that it’s just a game and it’s fun, easy going. But I would say the competition is just as hard, or even harder, to nail — to win — than in real life.'

Martins continues with ART Grand Prix for the 2025 F2 season (ART)

'He has proven he has the speed and talent to compete at the front in Formula 2. This season needs to be the one where everything comes together, and we will do everything we can to help him achieve his goals.'

Nicola Marinangeli is the second FIA Formula 3 driver for AIX Racing (AIX)

'It will be an interesting challenge for me, considering the two years racing in GT3.'

Self-starting IndyCar hybrids coming to pit lane (Racer)

'Self-starting on pit lane was banned as the series wanted to give teams a chance to grow accustomed with using and interacting with the hybrid machines during the second half of the season before entertaining the possibility of allowing drivers to use the motor generator units (MGU) to fire their internal combustion engines and depart the pits.'

  1. Jay, CotD – it’s been a long time. And it’s one that isn’t even controversial!

  2. strong Benetton/renault vibes from that JavaHouse/Splenda car :)

  3. All their wealthy children racing karts are going home with the best sim set ups in the world. Bottas raced LiveForSpeed back in the day at a decently high level when he was in the Junior car formulas (as were others). We’re not seeing anything new with sims, this kinda thing is already 20+ years old. I don’t think we’ll be ‘finding talent’ on sims either, because motorsport doesn’t seek talent, it seeks money. We have an over-supply of talent.

That’s the thing. You’re having kids race sims at 6 years old and racing karts (or whatever will be available to them) in the ‘real world’. This will be an unbeatable combination.

    1. I didn’t know such a thing about Bottas’ lower single-seater days.
I somehow just managed to remain unaware until today.

    2. motorsport doesn’t seek talent, it seeks money.

      Nice line

Theres a line in a DSJ book called The Racing Driver in which he muses the same point. The book was written in 1958
