One week from now we’ll know who won the first race of the 2025 Formula 1 season.
After seven different drivers won races last year, hopes are high that this could be an especially close championship from the off. Pre-season testing in Bahrain indicated there’s little to separate the top four teams – but is one of them about to spring a surprise? There are fascinating storylines up and down the grid, with Mercedes placing their faith in a rookie, Liam Lawson taking on the fearsome challenge that is being Max Verstappen’s team mate – and of course Lewis Hamilton’s bid to become Ferrari’s next world champion.
What does the new season have in store for us? Here’s our traditional 20 questions on the year ahead. Share your views in the comments.
1. How many different teams will win races over the course of the 2025 F1 season?

Which of the big 4 do you think will fail to win?
A more interesting question than “How many teams” (since almost everyone will answer 4) would be “How many drivers will win a race?” and/or “Which drivers will win at least one race?”
My guess: 7 (Lando, OP, MV, LH, CL, GR, Kimi)
If I was putting down $, I might change it to six

10 wins for Lewis? Bold yet exciting prediction. That’s more than every other user has predicted so far combined. I’ll be pretty shocked if any driver gets 10 wins this season. Maybe Norris IF the McLaren is as good as predicted, retains that advantage for at least 80% of the season and he stops blowing every start.
I’ll predict 3-4 car is as good as it looks and the same for Leclerc.

Esploratore (@esploratore1)
9th March 2025, 13:49
Yes, that seems unrealistic, I’m guessing best case scenario for hamilton at ferrari is splitting wins with leclerc and if norris wins that many there’s not a lot of wins left for others, considering there’s verstappen around too.
MazdaChris (@mazdachris)
10th March 2025, 14:24
If all of Jere’s predictions turned out to be true, the highest number of GPs that Leclerc could win would be
24 races total
-10 won by McLaren (based on Q3 answer)
-10 won by Hamilton (based on Q4 answer)
-2 to allow for the wins from Mercedes and RBR (based on Q1 answer)
Jere has Leclerc winning Monaco so Leclerc would win either one or two races. This could mean that between five and seven drivers would win races (couldn’t be all 8 from the top teams since this wouldn’t be mathematically possible).
This would either be a close fight between Hamilton and one driver from McLaren, or a one-sided, dominant championship from Hamilton if the two McLaren drivers were split evenly on wins.
So, much as I love Hamilton, I think this would likely not be a very good season of F1 if it played out that way. And needless to say, it’s an extremely unlikely scenario!

Brilliant! It’s hard to see where any team could get that level of dominance at this stage. McLaren seemed untouchable in Abu Dhabi and looked good in testing. Yes, the results were mixed going back further, but I think a different Norris will use the car better this year. More decisive. Merciless, even. On certain tracks, when it’s wet or when Norris makes (rarer) mistakes, Piastri or someone else might get in there. There should be some tracks where McLaren isn’t number one, so there should be wins for Ferrari, Max and George, too.

I had a look at last year’s answers. I got seven of the twenty right, with one being hard to tell (who had the most track limits infringements). Three were close: I guessed three teams would win (it was four), one red flag (there were two), third as Alpine’s best (it was second). Not that bad for a complete guess, which this after all is.
Let’s see about this year’s questions:
1. Three teams win a race. / 2. Tsunoda the first to retire. / 3. McLaren will win 8 races. / 4. Hamilton will win 2 races. / Carlos Sainz will get a 5th place as a best result. / 6. Doohan will be replaced. / 7. Two races will be red-flagged. / 8. Yes, all teams will score at least a point. / 9. Lawson will score more points than Antonelli. / 10. Alpine will score more points than Williams. / 11. No, not all drivers that start will also finish the season. / 12. Piastri will win the Monaco GP. / 13. Yes, the Monaco pit stop rule will be dropped. / 14. Verstappen will get the most poles. / 15. Tsunoda won’t drive in 2026. / 16. The protracted negotiations about the Concorde Agreement. / 17. No race bans on points. / 18. Ferrari will win the WCC. / 19. Verstappen will win the WDC.

I think the best driver is Verstappen, but most of the top racers are good enough to win if they get a clear car advantage. Norris had one last year, but I think he’ll be more ruthless this year, especially on starts. From testing McLaren looked in the best shape, so that’s my guess, but it could easily be Mercedes or Ferrari. If the cars are even… Norris/Piastri and Leclerc/Hamilton could easily take points off each other, leaving a Verstappen or Russell to swoop in and take the crown.
I think the odds are that the season will be LESS close than last year (reversion to the mean), but I certainly hope for another close one.

We had, on the whole, pretty similar predictions. I don’t think people are factoring in how VIP the inter team battles you mentioned might be to determining the WDC if McLaren is the fastest car, but only by a tenth or two. If the pattern holds, LN won’t have to worry about OP too often and can sail away while closely matched teammate are tripping over one another. If I were Lando, I’d prefer to have a big gap between myself and OP than have him close in what would supposedly be useful as a rearguard but probably more often McLaren getting flummoxed by managing them.

David BR (@david-br)
9th March 2025, 12:38
Have to agree with Broderick @banbrorace these are impossible asks!
For the voting options I went McLaren + Leclerc but really I’ve no idea which of McLaren, Ferrari, Red Bull or Mercedes will have the fastest care over a season. Does anyone? I’m tending ‘intuitively’ towards McLaren and Ferrari but that intuition may be blown into the Australian outback after Melbourne. I also have the feeling Hamilton will do well enough vs Leclerc but won’t have a smooth first season at Ferrari for whatever combination of factors (bad luck mostly) and will end up supporting CL in a title challenge. If so, that would prove decisive as I can see Hamilton being generous in his support causing issues for the Norris-Piastri rivalry. For Hamilton, Ferrari winning a title with his arrival would be a good result, even if disappointing personally.
Like I implied, seems as unlikely to happen as anything else at this point before the season.
PeteB (@peteb)
9th March 2025, 22:18
I think Piastri will be fired up this year. When they were treated as equals at the start of the year, he was very close to Norris’ pace which was impressive considering his lack of experience. His pace fell away a bit once McLaren decided to favour Lando but he’ll start the season knowing that if he can build a lead, it’ll be him who gets prioritised.
El Pollo Loco
10th March 2025, 3:46
Oscar wasn’t really close at all to Norris:
-Lando won quali battle 20-4
-And often OP had a sizable quali gap
-the first time Oscar finished ahead of Lando was round 8 in Monaco
-Race head to head was 17-6 (when both finished)
-there were a concerning amount of times Oscar finished two or more position behind Lando
As a fan of Oscar fan + someone who’s never really liked Lando, I’d love the opposite to be true, but Oscar got pretty well spanked by Lando
David BR (@david-br)
10th March 2025, 22:06
@peteb They seemed close for a good chunk of the season before Norris started dominating later – like you say, maybe that’s down to him being favoured or maybe just him improving his racing and cutting out some of the errors. Does Norris’s racing improve against his rivals? Does Piastri become quicker and match Norris at least on lap times? At this point I’m sceptical about both, but likely to be proved wrong about at least one of them. No idea which though.

Obviously these predictions are based on what I heard about testing ofc, if next saturday it turns out that red bull is competitive with mclaren, for example, then I’d bet on verstappen to win the driver’s championship.

2. Antonelli
Curious, why does everyone think Antonelli will be the first not to last the race distance? Won’t keep the car on the track or likely to hit someone else?

(OK not ‘everyone,’ mostly seems a vote for Doohan, except I get that, but not Antonelli)

I think Kimi will only slightly be edged by George. So, there’s a mighty big spread in predictions.
David BR (@david-br)
10th March 2025, 11:11
I’m anticipating Antonelli actually being faster by the end of the season. Hope so, always great to see a naturally fast driver enter Formula 1 and shake up the other drivers, especially towards the top of the grid.
El Pollo Loco
10th March 2025, 13:21
While Kimi’s has a solid edge in the voting, I’m shocked at the number of people who picked LL to outscore Kimi. IDK if some are just RBR fans, just don’t like Merc and/or Kimi or are all earnest in their choice, but I’d put a very sizable chunk of $ down Kimi’ll outscore Lawson.
If Kimi were to be clearly faster than George by EOS, it may be that this field is not nearly as good as we think it is. That or KA is a new GOAT w/the large advantage of youth.
David BR (@david-br)
10th March 2025, 16:32
Yeah, I don’t understand that either. In terms of team rationale, Mercedes seem to be viewing KA as more their future than GR, going by some of the mid-season remarks last year, just before he took to the track, while LL was explicitly signed as a second driver to Verstappen and not a future number one prospect. So team expectations would see Antonelli ahead in similar paced cars. Obviously those expectations may be confounded, or Red Bull have somehow leapt forward over the winter. We’ll have to see. I set a huge store by pace and Mercedes are fairly insistent on KA’s amazing pace. The rest he can pick up with experience.

Hardly.
F1 is the kind of product from which you can never expect too much. You can expect nothing and be positively surprised, but never expect too much from it; you’ll be disappointed nine times out of ten.
El Pollo Loco
10th March 2025, 13:24
Definitely. Always expect 30% less than you think you can realistically hope for and usually you’ll be right. It’s been 10+ years since I’ve found a season truly exciting (as in not just some fights for the title, but the cars and the racing feeling exciting while I watched).

I also listed Hadjar + Doohan as two who would be substituted for/or replaced and predicted Drugovich might get a sub appearance for FA if the AMR25 is awful and he wants to try the Indy 500 since he could actually get a Honda powered car now.

I thought about that. But that would leave Aston Martin with a really weak line-up going into 2026.
I have to imagine Stroll has some bigger plans than that. But who? It seems all the big names are tied down for quite a while yet. It’d be really disappointing if, after all the investments made into the team and its facilities, they have a line-up that would be decidedly ‘back of the midfield’ in its vibe.

Sauber, duh. I’d put the odds of Williams or Alpine taking a miraculous win 25% due to being particularly strong at XYZ track and 75% due to red flags and crashes coming at the perfect time at about 1 in 20. We’ve seen it in recent times before w/teams like Alpine and RB.

Me too. We could have another legendary driver in the mix if they got their stuff together. Let’s hope Newey helps them improve quickly. Gunther said, in the past during years when there was a rule change, typically teams would continue development until May and then shift most focus and resources to next year’s car.
Hopefully Newey sees enough low hanging fruit in the existing design to focus a few months fixing the AMR25. I know he’s pumped up because before he even arrived he was doing stuff like suspending any tunnel running until he arrived.
